"I asked the student what part of the SAT would help him the most, as we start getting closer to when he takes it for real. He said that he still needed the most help with the grammar section, so that is where we started. We worked on both choosing which underlined part of a sentence might be grammatically incorrect, as well as fixing up the grammar in a given passage. From there we moved on to some reading comprehension questions. The two passages on the first page were short ones. He was able to answer 3 of the 4 questions on that page correctly. If he is able to do that well on the SAT itself, I will be very proud of him. The next page we worked on had two comparative passages, which gave him a little more trouble than the short ones did. For any words that were in either the passages themselves or else in the questions/ answers that he didn't know, I had him write down as new vocabulary words to learn. His homework is to take one section, timed, from each of the reading, grammar, and math sections, so that he can see in what parts of the test he needs to pick up the pace. Sometimes he spends too long thinking about trying to figure out what the correct answer might be, so I told him to either go with his gut or else to skip the question entirely, possibly to come back to later on, so that he can at least look at the rest of the questions. The rest of his homework is to write another essay for me to read during our next session."
"We worked through her homework and new practice sections together. I assigned homework for next week."
"We reviewed math, vocabulary, critical reading, writing, essay. The student is doing much better. His math has seen great improvement in test taking strategies and overall score."
"The student and I went over word problems and the quadratic formula. Next week, we will look into how to factor polynomials and find the roots of an equation. His vocabulary is improving, and he should keep working on learning the terms in his prep book."
"The student and I were very productive yesterday, going over a lot of math and scrambled paragraphs. She's improving with the reading and logic. It's a pleasure to work with her. I created my own problem sets for her to perfect her knowledge of radicals. She will be taking a practice test this week, which will give us a better idea of where she is, especially with the math."
"The student and I worked exclusively on the reading portion of the test. He got his practice test grades back, and his math score went up precipitously, while his reading score remained steady. We talked mostly about using a more concise approach to questions."
