As an educator with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Indiana, I find immense joy in witnessing the moment a student truly understands a concept that once challenged them. With over 11 years of classroom experience and 5 years in online tutoring, 3 of which have been with Varsity Tutors, I specialize in Elementary English, Math, Reading, Science, Writing, and Social Studies. I am a graduate of the University of Southern Indiana, where I received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Teaching. I have experience teaching both high school and middle school math. I am passionate about all areas of math, and I love helping students better understand math because it is such an essential subject. I especially enjoy teaching algebra classes because algebra is an important building block for all other math concepts. Helping a student understand a math concept that they have struggled with for so long brings me an immense amount of joy. I like to use visuals and hands-on activities when teaching, but most importantly, I like to discover what my students' individual learning styles are and teach to their specific needs.

I completed a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry; a Master's Level Certificate in Composition, Literacy, Pedagogy, and Rhetoric; and a Master's Level Certificate in Women's Studies from the University of Pittsburgh in 2012. I also completed a Bachelor of Arts in English with an emphasis in creative writing from the University of Southern Indiana in 2007. Currently, I teach at the university level and also tutor students interested in becoming better writers, readers, and thinkers. In both group and one-on-one learning environments, I'm interested in getting to know students on a personal level to better understand them as individuals who often learn in many different ways. I employ various methods to spark interest and create successful follow-through habits to ensure assignments are completed in an effective and timely manner. I also focus on how understanding is met, so we can retrace our steps together, and show students how to use this approach when they have difficulties later on. My ultimate goal as an educator is to find ways to help students recognize the problems within their own work and arm them with the tools to change these tendencies so, in the future, they will have a stronger skill set for writing and reading, both incredibly useful, sought-after skills that lead to greater success in academic, and post-academic life. Most everyone is taught how to read and write, but few learn how to read and write well. I can help students develop skills for learning how to read, comprehend, and remember difficult material. I can also help with essay writing, editing, and revision. Many times, I've even persuaded students who initially disliked English to actually enjoy it. Personally, when I'm not teaching, reading, or writing, I enjoy cooking, caring for plants, and taking walks with my dog.

I'm Katy Reed, RN, MSN-Ed. I'm a DNP candidate, and I'm passionate about helping nursing students feel confident and prepared for the challenges of real-world practice. My journey began at the bedside, where I cared for patients in critical care and medical-surgical settings. Those experiences taught me the importance of sharp clinical judgment and strong foundational knowledgeskills that can truly make a difference in patient outcomes. As an educator, my goal is to share that perspective with students. I focus on making complex topics like pharmacology, dosage calculations, and NCLEX test-taking strategies approachable and practical. I believe learning should go beyond memorization; it should empower students to think critically and act decisively, especially in high-acuity situations. I became an educator because I know how overwhelming nursing school can feel, and I want to be the mentor who helps students turn uncertainty into confidence. I am a substitute teacher with Portland Public Schools. I got my Master of Arts in Teaching from Concordia University with a certification in advanced math in June 2018. My teaching experience is mostly in Middle School Math as well as Algebra 1-2, but I can help you with any level of High School Math. I also have a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Southern Indiana. I am finishing my masters in elementary education towards certification as a teacher. I have tutored children, worked as a substitute teacher, babysat and was an assistant troop leader for a Girl Scout troop. Between my practicum hours and experience gained through substitute teaching and tutoring I have interacted with children from grades K-8. I have assisted children with math, language arts, social studies and science. I have good knowledge of Windows office including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. I've been a student for over two decades! I received two Bachelors of Arts, one in French Studies and one is Spanish Studies, from the University of Southern Indiana, a certification in medical interpreting in Spanish and French from the Medical Interpreting and Translating Institute Online, and am currently a fourth-year MD/MPH student at Indiana University. I've tutored students at all education levels in almost every subject -- English, math, science, French, Spanish -- and I've traveled around Latin America and Europe teaching English as a Second Language. I truly enjoy being a student (hence the fact that I've been doing it most of my life!) and I love to help others understand what they are studying so that hopefully they can enjoy learning new things as well. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, hiking with my dog, watching sports, and traveling.

I love teaching! I've been a part of students' lives as a teacher, coach, and administrator for over thirty years. I have taught English, language arts, and journalism to middle school and high school students, and you will find me reading and writing along with them. I have also coached high school cross country, track, and basketball. I attended DePauw University for my English degree, Indiana University for my teaching degree, and the University of Southern Indiana for my master's degree.

Personally, tutoring and teaching were skills I discovered later in life. At the University of Southern Indiana, I tutored for three years. I realized in my time there that I have always been a teacher in some form and that I want to spend my life teaching. I have read widely and have a deep interest in language, its teaching, and its use as a tool for the advancement of people who learn to use it well. My high scores in college meant many graduate schools, even outside my area of study, were sending me mail and email expressing interest in having me study with them. I have found that, while teaching in a traditional sense is great, tutoring is more rewarding, especially since when tutoring, you can see firsthand the gaps in education you are filling.
