Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went through the materials and continued working on conversations. Then, we started working on writing."
"We spent much of the session discussing poems, speeches, and stories from a book of classical stories. We also did some exercises from his SAT prep book."
"1. We discussed current events by looking at CNN website topics 2. We read a brief article on how to pay less money for a cell phone plan and discussed which apps we use on our phones 3. We read a longer article about Las Vegas and discussed all of its aspects as an entertainment center 4. We looked at OPD pictures of common ailments that people address in conversation (colds, flu, bruises, etc.)"
"The student and I read a nonfiction informational article and discussed word meanings in context and author's message in close reading of text selections. She had a good understanding of the text - a 1230 Lexile level - and was able to pick up words and phrases quickly. She completed an outline of an argument response and had strong ideas. She is still working on including specific details and thorough explanations of ideas in order to solidify her understanding of new information. She is completing a three-paragraph response to the article, using her outline, to be reviewed at our next session."
"The student and I read a passage about peacocks. I introduced chunking the text and annotating strategies to help with reading comprehension. As we read, she utilized these techniques to help answer questions. She wrote a paragraph in response to the reading that utilized textual evidence to support her claim that she would not want a peacock as a pet. She read a passage about the Acres Farmland. As we read, she underlined and defined unknown words. She used evidence from the text to aid in analyzing the theme, main characters, and the story as a whole."
"The student and I read an essay about a particular professor's opinion of his students' lack of interest in reflecting deeply on their course material. The student wrote a response, summarizing the essay and discussing the points on which he agreed and disagreed with the author. We worked on word choice and made a small outline, which guided the order of points that he included in the response."
