Sophomore at the University of Minnesota working towards a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science. I'm a chemistry/calculus tutor who's spent the last few months tutoring college level chemistry. Outside of school I like to play/watch basketball, listen to music, and be outside!

I attended Case Western Reserve University and received my Masters of Science in chemical engineering with a focus on battery research and electrochemistry. The subjects I tutor are mainly focused in the STEM field, and I love teaching students about science! It is important to me to get to know my students and work together to find the answers in a way that plays to their strengths. Outside of academia I enjoy being in nature and composing music.

I have worked in education for 23 years. I started as a substitute teacher, then got hired as a paraprofessional and finally as a Music Teacher for 5 years. I have a Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Pedagogy, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education K-6 and a Master of Science Degree in Early Childhood Special Education. I attend many professional development opportunities to learn more and stay current on different education practices. I enjoy working with children and also learning from my students. I have a BS in Community Health Education and an MS in Health Information Management. My professional experience includes operational implementation of procedure and diagnosis codes for an HMO, Medicare policy quality review, healthcare consulting and auditing evaluation and management services, and education for implementing ICD-10 codes. My name is Alex. I am a 27 year-old student studying for my doctorate in Spanish Literature at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. I earned Master's in Spanish at Loyola University Chicago and my B.A. in Spanish at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. I've studied in Spain and for two years I lived and worked in Peru. I enjoy teaching and tutoring, and I love speaking Spanish!In my spare time, I am very active; I run with my dog, hunt pheasants, and fish. I like to watch my hometown sports teams and play pick-up hockey when I can. I am currently a sophomore at the University of Minnesota. I am studying computer science and taking pre-med courses. I've always had a passion for teaching students subjects they need help with. Whenever students come to me with help, I like to break the concept into small pieces. I make sure that the student understands these small pieces by visualizing the concept or explaining the concept in a different way. Overall, adding these small pieces leads the student to understand the main concept.The subjects I tutor are Organic Chem I & II, Physics I & II, CHEM I & II, and CALC I & II. My favorite subject is Organic Chemistry because I loved the critical thinking you have to apply for the course.

Helping students always brings me great joy and excitement! I have always loved being able to see the "lightbulb" go off when things finally click for students! I have been a tutor for over four years, with three years experience of mathematics tutoring experience and one year of early elementary tutoring. While receiving my undergraduate degree, I was a mathematics tutor for my university tutoring a wide variety of math subjects, including some computer science courses. Currently, I have received my Bachelor's degree in mathematics and biology and am pursuing my Master's degree in Public Health. My favorite mathematics courses to tutor include Algebra, Calculus, and Trigonometry! When I am with a student, I always strive to make sure I fully understand what questions the tutee may have during the session, and ensure that I am able to answer these to the best of my ability. I love using both visual and auditory methods to ensure I am able to relay my information as best as I can! Since I received multiple semesters of training for tutoring in my undergrad, I am able to accommodate students to however they are best able to learn, whether that is more visuals or using alternative explanations. Although I am extremely passionate about Mathematics, other areas I am interested in include History and Science!

I became interested in tutoring after I graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). I wanted to move to Las Vegas, Nevada after I graduated and I decided to take advantage of the opportunity I had to work with Varsity Tutors. I graduated with a double major in Communication and Philosophy with an emphasis on Applied Ethics. Ever since I started my Communication program at UMD, I have been fascinated by the importance and influence of effective communication both through interpersonal interactions and through writing. In addition, I've gained an interest in public speaking and learning how to do it effectively since it is such a big challenge.When it comes to tutoring others, I know it is paramount to recognize each individual's personal strengths and background knowledge in order to most effectively help them advance. Because of this, I find it important to cultivate and develop these personal strengths to help bring it out in their projects. This is what I keep in mind when trying to teach material to someone. My favorite areas to tutor in are Writing, Public Speaking, and Philosophy because I think these areas of study can help people develop themselves in to become a well rounded citizen.Outside of Academia, I am interested in exercising, music, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. When it comes to physical exercise, I keep things diverse depending on what I feel I need work in. In addition, I enjoy yoga to help maintain balance and keep a level state-of-mind. I enjoy listening to a variety of music from virtually all genres and I collect vinyl records and enjoy listening to them in my free time. When it comes to jiu-jitsu, I am still very much a beginner and I have only taken a few months of classes but I have enjoyed every single one. I am new to the area and have yet to join a local gym but am eager to get started again.

I was introduced to teaching while pursuing, and eventually completing, my Ph.D. in analytical chemistry. Teaching in a lecture setting was a largely impersonal process. I wanted to teach in a setting where the student was comfortable asking questions, which is not an easy task in a large classroom. Teaching for me has always been more rewarding when doing so in a one-on-one setting. In this scenario, I can easily tailor the lessons to the needs and pace of the student.
