Simple, logical and patient. I believe math, science, and any other subject follow simple rules. If applied patiently and with logic it will produce great results. This can be totally stress-free learning and that is my philosophy. How can you help a student become an independent learner? By teaching the student that the basic principles are important. They can focus on the key 2-3 principles in each topic and they will become experts in solving problems in that field. The same can be applied to any subject. That is how they become an independent learner. How would you help a student stay motivated?
