My interest in tutoring writing and English began with familiar elements: a love of these subjects and a desire to work in an area generally focused on people and ideas. However, as I've looked back more carefully at my own learning experience over the years, I've come to understand that tutoring is about personal and global discovery. Tutoring is students learning about their strengths and weaknesses and their connection to the world of larger knowledge that can be guided and cultivated care

I am a patient and kind teacher and tutor. I love teaching and tutoring because it makes a difference in the lives of other people. No matter how challenging my students' work may seem, they will have my support and encouragement. I welcome your input, and I enjoy seeing my students build their confidence, make progress, and meet their goals. I am also a global citizen who respects and values people of various cultures, backgrounds, and ages.I have earned a Ph.D. in English (Morgan State University), a 120-Hour TEFL certification (myTEFL/Footprints Language Education), an Intermediate Spanish Certificate (la Universidad Autnoma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca), an M.A. in African American Studies (University of Iowa), and more than 18 hours in graduate-level history. I am a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Golden Key.I have taught more than 10 years at the college and high school levels, including English, writing, literature, U.S. history, African American history, world civilization, film studies, and screenwriting. I teach and tutor in these subject areas. I am also an artist who teaches drawing classes.During the second half of my career as an educator, I have witnessed too many young people being disqualified from opportunities and struggling to adapt to college-level work because they were weak in basic skills. Despite having graduated from high school, their reading, writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills were below high school level. Year after year, the problem has worsened. I am a teacher who can help prevent this from happening to your child.Since 2011, I have also been a copy editor and proofreader. I edit all types of formal and informal writing for grammar, sentence structure, efficiency, and clarity. My experience also includes four years as an Upward Bound academic counselor and one year as the coordinator of a homework center and summer program for elementary school children. Therefore, I have worked with small children, preteens, teens, and adults successfully. My talents and skills also include poetry, art, and storytelling. I have written poetry since I was a child. I have let my students read and write parodies and compare poems to songs in the literature classes that I have taught. I have conducted poetry workshops for K-12 classes and community organizations.I have been drawing since I was a toddler watching re-runs of the campy Batman TV series (from way before my time) and trying to imitate what I saw. As I got older, I drew other comic book characters and Transformers. I took art classes in high school and college. Later, I taught a drawing workshop (basic drawing and anime/manga) as part of the weekend and summer activities for an Upward Bound program (a pre-college program for grades 9-12).My Ph.D. in English includes a concentration in Film Studies and Screenwriting, and I have been a movie script analyst since 2011. I have rated scripts for writers, production companies, and screenwriting contests. My awards include the Adele V. Holden Creative Writing Excellence Award (portfolio of screenplays). At the Cannes Film Festival, I screened and represented Filmsnoir's short film "Prodigal" while I was also an intern for Panorama Media (Annapurna's film distribution).I am a creative and versatile person whose interests are quite diverse. I like current and classic music, movies, television, and comics--especially action, comedy, sports, wrestling, martial arts, and anime. My huge kung fu collection includes the work of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Angela Mao, and the Venom Mob. I also have plenty of Shaw Bros, Golden Harvest, and American-made films. Some of my favorite anime are Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, Gatchaman, and Bleach. My favorite adventures include ziplining in Mexico as well as screening my colleague's short film, attending movie premieres, and walking the red carpet twice at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

In my roles as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, and assistant principal, I've worked mainly with underserved student bodies from Baltimore, MD, to Brooklyn, NY. As an elementary school teacher, I have taught all subjects, but I have a passion for teaching reading. Reading is the one skill that you have to know how to do in order to learn all the other content areas. Reading is not only necessary for learning. Reading is also something to be enjoyed. I want to share my love of reading with the students that I tutor.

Partner with a tutor who is engaging, understanding, and clear is essential for effective learning. My goal is to embody these qualities for every student I tutor. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to teach every grade level from PK-8, as well as grades 9 and 11. Teaching runs in my family, with a lineage of educated women who have all earned their doctorates in education. Their achievements have inspired me, and I aim to "pay it forward" by inspiring the students I tutor. My ability to excel in tutoring the sciences stems not only from my teaching experience but also from my certifications. Between the states of TX and NJ, I am certified to teach all grades from K-12. I have earned credentials in early childhood education as well. These experiences and certifications have equipped me with a variety of strategies to meet the unique needs and learning styles of students at different academic stages. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Plant and Soil Science from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Michigan State University. My Master of Science in Biology and Doctorate in Science Education were both completed at Morgan State University. Currently, I am furthering my education through a Master of Science in Professional Counseling at Amberton University, which enhances my ability to support the emotional and mental well-being of my students alongside their academic growth. I specialize in tutoring middle and high school sciences, with a particular fondness for life science and biology. These subjects not only align with my academic background but also fuel my passion for exploring the wonders of the natural world and sharing that enthusiasm with my students. One of my first occupations after earning my master's degree was working as a scientist, an experience I thoroughly enjoyed. My teaching philosophy centers on the belief that every student can grow their learning with the right guidance, instruction, and support. I strive to create a safe and engaging learning environment where students feel valued and motivated to reach their goals. My ultimate aim is to make complex scientific concepts accessible and enjoyable for each student I tutor.

I started tutoring in high school, by helping some of my peers with subjects they were struggling with. They wanted to learn but needed a little extra assistance to comprehend some of the things being taught in class. Together we would problem solve and come up with effective solutions to not only learn but also create great study habits. It brings me great joy to help a student overcome a challenge in his or her studies. We will break down the problem together and develop great strategies to solve and comprehend the lesson.

I am a graduate of North Carolina State University where I earned a doctorate degree in Applied Mathematics. After graduation, I held a Post-doctoral position at one of the five United States military service academies. I am currently an Assistant Professor at another one of the service academies. My overarching goal is to broaden the minds of my students and be an integral part of their future careers. Being a math professor is a fulfilling career that comes with interesting challenges. One component of my responsibility as an instructor is to show students that mathematics is not as tedious as they may think, and it can not only be enjoyable but useful. My goal is to help instill confidence in my students so that they can believe that they can perform well in class, and as a result actually be successful. It is important that my students understand concepts well rather than just memorize rules. My ideas for aiding students to be successful in learning mathematics is to provide a fun environment conducive to learning. My style of teaching allows the students to express their ideas freely in class and creates an environment where students can learn from their mistakes.I have taught a variety of classes in my career including single variable calculus, multivariable calculus, differential equations, mathematical modeling, engineering mathematics, and an introduction to proof writing and set theory course. I love to teach calculus and differential equations as an applied mathematician, however I really enjoyed teaching set theory and introduction to proof writing as well.
