Hi! I'm Yashas, and I am a graduate student at UCLA studying Bioinformatics. I completed my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Biology at Georgia Tech in May 2025. I've been a Varsity Tutors tutor since June 2022. I also taught large classes through high school, with experience teaching science and English. Through an organization called the North South Foundation, which provides scholarships to underprivileged children in India, I taught basic science subjects such as chemistry, earth science, physics, and more. I taught English classes to students in India who had little to no English exposure through another nonprofit organization called PURE, which works to ensure underprivileged children can attain their education. Throughout my teaching and tutoring experiences, I have always worked to be approachable and welcoming to my students, because I believe asking questions can often times be the most effective way of learning. Generating and asking questions can give students a different method of approaching problems that they face, and I try to make sure I can be there for students to have any questions they have answered. Outside of school, I enjoy playing basketball and soccer with friends and working out.

I received a Master's in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech and I'm currently a lecturer in the Engineering Technology Department at Kennesaw State University. In addition, I taught Physics and Engineering courses for 8 years at a community college in Atlanta, Ga. Dealing with young people starting their engineering journeys in college and with 2 recent high school grads of my own, I am acutely aware of the difficulty that students have in Physics, Calculus, and other early pre/ engineering classes. I believe that I have a unique ability to simplify complex concepts. Often times, classroom instructors don't have the bandwidth or time to get into the weeds when it comes to these difficult subjects. The weeds are where you need to start if you are to truly understand these subjects and not just become an 'equation hunter'. I have a passion for helping young learners and I know there is a void that needs to be filled in the teaching of Physics. That is why I have chosen to take on tutoring in addition to my current responsibilities.

My favorite ways to learn something are to see examples in real applications and to see analogies in the world around me. Of course, everyone is not like me, so I strive to figure out what works for other students, even if they don't know themselves. In the end, however, even a solid understanding of any subject isn't enough. What it really comes down to is practice, followed by more practice.My philosophy is that knowledge is only as good as what you do with it. I believe we go to school not just to learn facts or formulas but to learn how to learn. Perhaps the material you learn will be useful in your career, but if not, you will be able to take the skills you learned along the way, the learning how to learn, and apply them to whatever you desire.

I graduated from Georgia Tech in May 2015 with a B.S. in Global Economics and Modern Languages. Throughout my four years in university, I worked as a nanny for a family in Atlanta with 3 children, aged 3 through 12, and tutored them and assisted with homework. I also volunteered at an after school program for underprivileged kids called Atlanta Union Mission where I worked with small groups of elementary, middle, and high school students on homework assignments.After I graduated from Georgia Tech in May, I moved to Munich and worked as an au pair for five months. I used this opportunity to travel around Europe and learn German. Although I studied Spanish throughout high school and college and am fluent in the language, I love learning about new cultures and languages and am excited to continue to grow in my linguistic abilities.I think that a good teacher can make all of the difference in a student's life. As a child, I believed that I was bad at math and did not see the value in learning it. However, I had a math teacher in sixth grade who pushed and encouraged me and made me love it. I then went on to take advanced math classes throughout middle and high school and then attend a technical university with a heavy math emphasis. I believe that many students are disinterested in academics because they feel discouraged, and I hope to turn this around in the same way that my sixth grade math teacher did for me through persistence and positive reinforcement.

I am an undergraduate student at Georgia Tech majoring in mechanical engineering. I have worked with students before in math and physics, and those are my favorite subjects to tutor in. In high school, I volunteered at my old middle school, helping low income students in pre-algebra and other middle school math. I like to incorporate empathy into my tutoring, making sure students are confident and feel like they are improving, and I try to make as little assumptions as possible about the students I work with before helping them.
