In an educational climate increasingly reliant on the power of the scantron, I believe that learning should exist beyond the small, graphite-dark bubbles that are as dull as the knowledge they are supposedly able to convey is exciting. I'm an electrical engineering major at Brown University with interests in neuroscience, linguistics, and robotics, among other things. I've always loved learning, and my curiosity has led me through numerous subject areas. I constantly seek to apply my classroom learning in practical situations. For example, I have conducted research on dementia using electrophysiology in a mollusk model. I participate in hackathons and robotics challenges that test not only my programming ability but also my hardware skills as a tinkerer. My engineering pursuits require a strong foundation in mathematics, my interest in the life sciences calls for a myriad of memorization techniques, and my participation in the academic world at large reminds me daily of the importance of sharp writing skills. I hope to share some of these things, both content and technique, with my students. Though I will make sure that they can come away from each session armed with the skills needed to take on the modern education system, I also hope that they will take with them some appreciation for learning itself.

I am a junior at Brown University pursuing a degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. After I graduate, I intend to enroll in an MD/PhD program in bioethics or health policy. In the past, I have tutored students between ages 10 and 19 in Political Science, Algebra II/Trigonometry, English as a Second Language, and sixth grade English and Math. I decided to become a tutor because my math tutor (from 8th-12th grades) took me from hating math to enjoying and succeeding in it. I want to help others make that same transition--a bad teacher or tough class can crush a student's innate curiosity, but a good tutor can restore it.I currently tutor students in the social and biological sciences (elementary school through college level), reading and writing, and in standardized test preparation. I am also an avid debater, and coach debate at a high school in Providence, RI. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy creative writing, singing, painting, horseback riding, skiing, hiking, and traveling. My dream is to one day practice medicine in the developing world, but I also hope to pursue a career in academia (a la Paul Farmer.)I look forward to speaking with you!

I am a recent Brown University graduate from Dallas Texas now living in Manhattan. I graduated with honors in political science and have a good mind for standardized tests. I am currently preparing to take the LSAT, so I am in the test taking mindset myself and am excited to help students preparing for the SAT/ACT this summer/fall. In addition to SAT tutoring, I have experience coaching high school debate and am passionate about finding ways to simplify test-taking concepts so that they can become second nature to students approaching the process. I am a strong believer in the notion that standardized test taking is a learnable skill and believe I can effectively help students get into a mindset conducive to their succeeding. My favorite subjects to tutor are test prep and politics/government course work. I am excited to tutor all components of test prep but am particularly passionate about the reading/writing portions, which have always come the most naturally to me.

I graduated from Brown University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience, Magna Cum Laude, and as a member of the Sigma Xi Honor Society. I've been tutoring since I was in high school, and have tutored students from elementary school through college. I am very passionate about teaching material in a way that works with each student's personal learning needs and making sure that they understand the material at its core, not just how to answer a test question. Because I majored in Neuroscience, I have expertise in a wide range of sciences, as Neuroscience is a very interdisciplinary subject. I have also had extensive experience in Computer Science. Outside of Neuroscience, I devoted a lot of time to studying the humanities. I even started a blog my junior year as an outlet to further pursue these academic interests! As a result, I also enjoy tutoring in Literature, English, and Writing.Outside of tutoring and academia, I am a professional dancer and choreographer. I also work on other artists' websites to make sure their sites are the best they can be, along with other arts administration work. In my spare time, I also practice aerial silks, and you'll occasionally catch me working on my handstands in Central Park.

I am a rising sophomore at Brown University seeking a dual degree in bio-statistics and public health. I never thought it would be possible for me to receive an Ivy League education. All my life my father stressed to me that receiving an education was the only way for me to succeed and climb in this world. That is exactly what I kept in my mind as I worked diligently throughout high school, became the valedictorian, and was accepted to Brown University.I discovered early on my knack for teaching others since I self taught myself countless math and science subjects in high school. People would always seek my help because I could explain the information in a way that was clear and applicable. I understand how frustrating it can be to learn something new or master complex equations and chemical principles. I was not born a genius, like Einstein, but I have realized that true hard work and dedication can get you far in your education. I instill these values in all my students and I deeply enjoy watching them succeed through every new problem they encounter.I have tutored for four years in chemistry, physics, math, English, and statistics. I have also tutored students in SAT prep, and the techniques I employ have worked for every student I have taught. I identify my student's weakness and work with them to strengthen their test taking skills. I look forward to helping many people realize their true potential just like my father did for me.

I am a recent graduate of Brown University (2012- GPA 3.7) where I graduated with degrees in English Literature and Theatre Arts. I have always had a passion for teaching, first fostering this interest as a teacher's aid in my school's Lower School and as a camp counselor for a number of years. Teaching and education continued to be an important part of my collegiate life as well. As far as hobbies are concerned, I love Photography and travel writing. My favorite author (not a travel writer) is Virginia Woolf.Recently, I was awarded an AT&T New Media Fellowship, an award given to those students who show promise in the combination of writing and new media, and am currently connected with Write Bloody, a publishing company based in New York City, where I work part time as an editor. While at Brown I worked as a member of the Brown Writing Fellows, a group of selected and trained students who show and aptitude in writing, editing, and the teaching of the two, and No Small Parts, an educational group that led performance and theatre workshops at schools in Providence, Rhode Island. As far as my high school education/scores go, I graduated from Saddle River Day School (a small private high school in Bergen County, NJ) in 2008 as salutatorian and as a member of the Cum Laude National Honors Society. I was also the recipient of the Bradford Cooke Sommer Humanitarian Scholarship (2007) as well as the University of Rochester Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Scholarship (2007). I am a fourth year student at Brown University. I am currently pursuing my Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology. I enjoy reading, writing, traveling and cooking. I have worked at multiple tutoring organizations and while I teach all age groups, I am very passionate about teaching younger children. I enjoy coming up with creative ways to make learning fun for children. This passion stems from teaching my 8 year old sister. I tutor a broad range of subjects but I am especially passionate about math, English and essay writing. As a writer myself, I understand the importance of developing proficient writing skills and I am passionate about helping students develop a interest in the art form that is writing. I like to come up with ways to make learning fun for students. I understand that some subjects are frustrating for students and tutoring can sound like more school and does not always sound like fun. I believe that if a student is relaxed and excited for a tutoring session, they learn a lot more and are more engaged in the lesson. Especially with test prep for standardized exams, which can be a lot of pressure for students, I like to come up with individualized test-taking strategies for each student I tutor. If I can help a student feel more self-confident and self-assured about their classes and exams, then I am doing my job right.

Throughout the ages, the religious and philosophical leaders of the Far East considered teaching the noblest occupation-- one of true wisdom and selflessness. Having had the great fortune to experience the transformative power of wonderful teachers, I've come to agree with this viewpointI've found my calling in education. I haven't always known that teaching was the vocation for me. Even though I've always taught, on some level, as a T.A., a private tutor, a classroom teacher, or a friend, I tried different jobs in the private sector for several years. However, upon much introspectionmy own enlightenmentI realized that teaching is my true calling. I have a passion for teaching, which is unmatched by any other field. Why do I teach? I teach because I know that I will learn something new from each teaching experience, with every student, with every day, without exception, and because this path is one that I know is beneficial to others and to society as a whole. I teach, because I believe I can do it well. I approach the job with a balance of both diligence and patience, and confidence and humility, with extreme focus and an open mind. I am very patient, which is incredibly important, because learning takes time and involves challenges. When I teach I project a sense of confidence, because as a lifelong perfectionist, I really do my homework! Before each lesson, I make sure I am thoroughly prepared so that I can teach lucidly and coherently and know how to anticipate questions and readily answer them. My confidence helps establish my authority in the classroom. I also strive to make what I teach relevant to my students' lives by drawing on my experiences as a student and teacher. I strive to be an educator like my own favorite teachersa teacher who is passionate about and has profound knowledge of his specialty, who believes in the unparalleled importance of education, and who inspires his students with his devotion.

My specialty is language and history, with an emphasis on Japanese, English, Latin, US history and World History, but I am also more than happy to help out those struggling with Algebra and Geometry. I am 26 years old from Dartmouth, Massachusetts. I grew up on the beach and have always loved being outside in the great outdoors. I went to college at Brown University in Rhode Island as an undecided major but was drawn towards the sciences, specifically environmental sciences, as I was inspired by the amazing professors I had there. I took a huge range of courses at Brown from photography to environmental microbiology and loved the diversity. During my degree, I pursued various research and teaching opportunities around the world including work with an agroforestry nonprofit in Kenya and teaching environmental education in the Bahamas. After spending some time working in the field on a small lake in Vermont and analyzing environmental samples in the laboratory, I was inspired by my colleagues and decided to pursue scientific research. I applied for a PhD program at The University of Oxford in Oxford, England studying the interactions between climatic variables and marine organisms. At Oxford I had the amazing opportunity to propose my own research questions and work with scientific leaders from around the world. At Oxford I was also able to take on various teaching and mentoring roles of undergraduate students in earth and environmental science topics. I am excited to learn with you and share my experience with these topics!

My primary interest in tutoring comes from my background in history (BA from Brown University) and creative writing (MFA from The City College of New York).I remember the fright and joy I felt the first time I worked with students. It was in a shabby classroom in India, at a volunteer organization called the Lha Institute. The students were teenage Tibetan refugees and one monk from Thailand who was in town to learn English. The class spoke a mixture of bad English, Tibetan, and Nepali, but they had signed up for my creative writing seminar anyway. Some of them couldn't write or were afraid to share their writing, and some of them were more than eager to read personal essays about what was meaningful to them. At the end of the seminar, they gave me a gift of a pen and a special writing pad. Given their economic circumstances, this was a tremendous gift from them.

I received a BA in English from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2008 and an MA in English from Brown University in 2011. I love to read, and I love to study language because words offer so much potential for emotional depth, vivid imagery, tonal complexity, humor, subtlety, irony and even playfulness. I believe strong reading and writing skills make us better thinkers, better communicators and better observers of the world around us.I have a great passion for teaching. I have taught Writing and Literature courses at Brown University, and I have worked as a teaching assistant, a Writing Tutor for high school and college students, and a classroom consultant. I enjoy getting to know my students and working together on long-term projects, but I also love the thrill of fast-paced one-hour sessions with new faces. My teaching style is all about "you," including your voice, your arguments and your ideas. Standardized test formats and strict grading rubrics can make writing feel like a chore for many students, but I like to see these limitations as opportunities. I work closely with my students to unlock their intellectual and creative potential, all the while helping to keep their language neat and their arguments strong. I believe that every step of the writing process, from brainstorming and outlining to drafting and editing, should challenge the student to develop his or her voice and sharpen his or her thinking. I help students write unique and persuasive essays that live up to the requirements of academic writing. I also help with grammar, vocabulary and reading skills. When I am not reading or writing I like to knit, run and dance around my kitchen. I am a longtime vegan and I love to cook and bake. I wasn't used to listening. In high school, my flair for the dramatic led me to the stage: I was comfortable there in front of audiences, filling auditoriums with my voice. And so, when I arrived at Brown University, I thought teaching would be a natural extension of my inner (and, to the occasional dismay of friends, outer) thespian. When I stood in front of my first classroom, teaching English during a sweltering Providence summer to ten eight year-olds, I realized that not even my loudest volume could bring order. And so, I began to learn what my teachers throughout schooling had implicitly taught me: listening to and building relationships with students is perhaps the most essential tool in a teacher's arsenal.Throughout my time at Brown, I lent my ear to various different teaching opportunities, learning to know when to lead, and when to step back and be led. As a tutor with Brown Refugee Youth Tutoring and Enrichment, I met with Yonas, a fourteen year-old from Guinea, to help him with scholarship applications. He was confounded by the prompt: "describe yourself." Together, we worked to clarify what that meant to craft a narrative that would help him succeed. He got that scholarship, and the essay he wrote, though informed by conversations with me, was all his: it was his story, his words, and his voice. Later, I taught German to sleepy undergrads. In the classroom with twelve students, I balanced teaching a lesson at the front of the classroom with walking through the desks, observing, questioning, and facilitating conversation. In my weekly office hours, I sat one-on-one with students, encouraging them to come with questions or just a thirst for conversation: in the lobby of the school library (my "office"), I sat for hours with my students, discussing everything from the subjunctive to our favorite kinds of wurst. My approach to tutoring is much the same: my sessions are personally tailored to each individual tutee's needs and interests. I am a firm believer that learning is not static it must be informed by a mutual exchange between tutor and tutee: learning not just the "why" of a question, but also the "how."

I graduated from Brown University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Cognitive Science with a focus on Children’s Development. While I was at Brown I was the president of my all-female acappella group, the Brown’sTones, I performed in a lot of theatre on campus, and I volunteered in pre-school and kindergarten classrooms.Last year I worked at a charter high school in Boston, MA that supplied students with in-school tutoring during the day. There I tutored Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Spanish and all high school levels of English. I also organized all of the clubs and activities for the school and led the choir. I would never describe myself as just a “Math and Science” or just an “English and History” person, which is why I tutored so many different subjects, but if I had to pick a favorite I would say that tutoring math is my favorite. There’s something great about knowing that an answer is 100% , beyond a shadow of a doubt, correct. If you ask any of my students they will definitely tell you that I am a fun tutor. I think a tutoring session will go exponentially better if there’s some laughter involved. I’m always down for racing against my students doing math problems or coming up with hilarious study mnemonics for upcoming tests. This past fall, I lived in Padua, Italy as an au pair for a family with a 6 year-old and an 8 year-old. I got to improve my Italian, drink delicious cappuccino with the other au pairs in the mornings while looking out over the beautiful piazzas, and travel all around Italy. I even went to the largest chocolate festival in all of Europe! Now that I’m back in the states, I work at a noted university in a lab that studies how environment and socioeconomic status affect children’s brain development. Specifically, I work on a project that studies the efficacy of HeadStart programs in New York.

I graduated from Brown University, majoring in history. I first discovered my interest in tutoring when I was a teenager. I was interested in volunteering in my community and took part of a program to tutor kids within elementary schools. I'm comfortable with a wide range of subjects but I'm most passionate about History, English and Literature. These are topics I love discussing in general and I'm always happy to have a chance to help someone else find enjoyment in the subject.
