I have over 15 years of experience working with students at the middle school, high school, college, and graduate levels. I hold teaching certification in English, Social Studies, Speech, and theatre, and have also taught Humanities and tutored ESL at the college level. I have a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Teaching as well as an ESL Certification. I enjoy tutoring a wide range of subjects in the area of English and the Humanities. My favorite subjects are history and literature. Outside of teaching and tutoring, I love to garden, read, and sing and dance!

As a student of life, education, both formal and informal, energizes me. On the formal front, I have my AA in Psychology, my BA in Criminology, and my MS in E-Commerce, and I have an equally diverse post-studies career history. My love of education has taken me to Southern California where I fed my love of law and learned about film. Next, I visited rural Florida with a stint at a Community Theatre. I've even spent a fair amount of time in the Hospitality Industry in Las Vegas, which, unexpectedly, introduced me to the construction industry. Through all of this, I have been a professional tutor for profit and pro bono. I believe education should be available to everyone regardless of age, sex, or socio-economic status, and I utilize learning identification to impart wisdom in the most effective way possible for each student's needs. I love that magical moment when the student "gets it." With experience in a broad range of subjects, mathematics is the most enjoyable for me, as well as LSAT Logic Games I'm the weirdo doing LSAT games at the tea house. My spare time finds me in nature for hikes and trail runs, and I can regularly be found on an obstacle course (Spartan, Tough Mudder, SISU, etc.) or doing an extreme endurance events either racing or supporting friends. Life is to be learned and lived!

They are currently getting their PhD in French. They have also been trained as a writing tutor in English, French and Spanish. Elsie grew up in France, and continued to learn languages in immersion programs, study abroad semesters, and fascinating courses through graduate school. They have worked with multilingual students in elementary schools, immersion academies, tutoring programs, and in university courses. They also speak German, a little bit of Italian, and has an ever-growing "languages to learn" list.

Learning is exciting! Anything new that you learn - an idea, a skill, a fact - changes you and paves the way for the next new idea, skill or fact to come along. I love learning. I love helping other people to learn. Be patient! Learning isn't always easy. (Teaching isn't always easy either.) So, be patient. Students need to be patient and teachers need to be patient. Sometimes, a new idea seems too challenging. That's the first time you see it. The second time, it starts to become more clear. Sometimes, our brains just need a little time to absorb. So, be patient! It will come.

I have been teaching 18- to 22-year-old students at the college level since 1995. I love imparting to them my own passion for the English language and its literary heritage, from Chaucer through our best 21st-century writers. I am particularly absorbed by the history of fiction, drama, and poetry in English, and I hope to continue to teach such love of the written word to curious students today.

I'm a current PhD student in the history department at Georgetown University who is also an experienced instructor with Varsity Tutors. As a recipient of several degrees, the most recent being a BA in history from Hillsdale College and a MA in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies from Stanford University, I have long sought to make teaching my profession. Meanwhile, as a volunteer grade school teacher and a tutor with this company, I have many years' experience helping students reach their full potential. I am capable of teaching students in many subjects, including reading, mathematics, test prep, Latin, and especially writing, history, and literature. In practice, I am comfortable adapting to different learning styles and specific student preferences. Outside of my academic and career endeavors, I enjoy cooking, reading, and listening to and making music.

I also walk/jog 50-plus miles a week, do yoga, and exercise my critical thinking skills regularly. English Composition, Literature, and Research, the majority of my teaching time was in college preparatory curricula. I make a room comfortable when I come in but if it needs energized, I energize it.

My love affair with language began in 8th grade when, as I read short stories, I saw how word-crafting could issue in what I call 3-D thinking. Good writing breathes sharp life into ideas, fosters synergy across them while creating new thought patterns for writer and reader. Throughout my 25 years of teaching and tutoring college students at an Ivy League university and at other local institutions guiding them through class essays, research projects, honors and masters theses, and graduate school personal statements--I always found joy in helping students discover what they wanted to sayand to express themselves coherently and persuasively. I hold a B.A. in English from Fordham University summa cum laude and in 1998 I earned a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Pennsylvania. In the course of completing my doctoral project after a long pause from grad school to raise my son, I cultivated the ability, and empathy, to look at academic challenges resourcefully from both sides of the desk. Given that my research on Hamlet was highly interdisciplinary-- joyous and original--I have carried that intellectual exhilaration into all my work as a lecturer, writing specialist, tutor, academic advisor and administrator, always urging students to seek out more conceptual connections and to write as integratively as possible. Currently I am working part-time by choice, but my staunch resolve that the pen is mightier than the sword remains intact and never fails to excite me. I want to share my excitement, expertise, and love of writing with you--and am ready to motivate you and empower you, as I have done so for numerous students, to write your best thinking!
