I am a graduate of Amherst College with a BA in English, originally from Florida but now living in New York. I have tutored students in English Literature, Writing, Reading Comprehension, Economics, and math through Pre-Calculus ever since I was in high school, and also provide tutoring for college entrance exams (SAT, ACT). I work hard with my students to instill the confidence needed to succeed while building deep, intuitive understandings of key concepts that are critical for success. During my teaching sessions I try to use engaging and amusing examples to illustrate the subject, with a keen understanding that learning is most fruitful when student and teacher are enjoying themselves. I also try to provide students with effective study habits and exercises that can maximize the time between sessions and help achieve the best results they are capable of - and my belief is that every student is capable of far more than he or she thinks! While not teaching I can generally be found in the living room of my apartment reading or scribbling in notebooks in various coffee shops around New York.

I am a graduate of Amherst College where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Spanish Literature. Since graduating I've worked as a paralegal in a corporate law firm and a freelance translator. Before that I worked as a teacher during my summers in college instructing adolescents from both upscale and low-income neighborhoods. While I tutor a wide variety of subjects I'm most passionate about Spanish, History, and Literature. In my experience, helping students learn Spanish and prepare for standardized tests is the most rewarding part of teaching and tutoring. I'm a native Spanish speaker and love teaching the language and culture that I grew up with to others. Similarly, there is no feeling more satisfying than seeing a student I'm working with experience an "aha moment" as what they're learning starts to click and their confidence consequently grows. In my opinion, education isn't one size fits all, as such I individually tailor my lessons for each student I work with. When I'm not tutoring you can find me reading a book, playing soccer, or bemoaning my decision to be a life-long fan of the New York Jets.

I'm Alex, a 28-year old with a passion for teaching science and for helping students conquer standardized tests. Since I began working as a physics, math, and SAT tutor with Varsity Tutors in 2011, I've found it incredibly rewarding to help my students develop sustainable study habits and realize their academic potential. I believe that a student's performance is largely influenced by their weekly study routine, and I make it a priority to help my students figure out a process that works well for them. For a bit of background, I graduated from Amherst College with a B.A. in Architecture & Environmental Studies. After college, I received a Fulbright Scholarship to study architecture at Cambridge University, where I got my Master's degree in Architecture. Due to some personal exposure I had to family illness, I decided to switch paths and pursue a career in medicine, and I'll be applying to medical school next year.I've been helping students with physics, math, and SAT prep since college, and more recently I've been focusing on tutoring pre-medical subjects (Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Physics, Psychology/Sociology) and MCAT preparation. I understand how intimidating the mighty MCAT can feel. I help my students master both the content and strategy of the test, develop manageable study routines, and build the confidence they need to perform to their maximum potential on test day.I scored a 2350 (99th percentile) on my SAT and a 520 (98th percentile) on my MCAT, and my undergraduate GPA was 3.87 (overall) / 4.0 (science).I'm happy to meet up in Philly / suburbs or meet with you online. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

I am a great tutor because I am an invested teacher and remain an enthusiastic learner; I have a passion for literature and history, an interest in helping others, and a range of experiences working with many different learners.I graduated cum laude from Amherst College with a B.A. in English and History, I have my M.S. in Childhood Education and Special Education from Touro College, and I have an initial teaching certificate in New York.In addition to my personal education, my experiences in the classroom and my continued work in education have shaped me as an educator. I taught second grade for two years in south Bronx, supporting my 32 students in mastering content in all subjects, including writing, math, and reading. After that, I transitioned to a network office where I now write middle school and high school English Language Arts curriculum and assessments. While I love my current work, I am not in the classroom much anymore. I miss working directly with students, and thus am very interested in tutoring. I have a particular interest in tutoring all elementary subjects, English Language Arts, and U.S. history. While there is a time and a place for "lecture," I believe students do their best thinking when they are answering thoughtful questions both verbally and in writing. Because thinking is the crux of learning, I always strive to have student voices dominating during tutoring sessions.Tutoring sessions are short, so I believe each one should be purposeful. Each session must have a goal that is clear to both me and the student. Because learning is as much about skills acquisition as it is about content knowledge--a student does not want to need a tutor forever!-- these goals should be transferable, and feedback throughout a session should drive toward helping a student achieve that goal.

My expertise is in classroom, small group, and one-on-one instruction in physics of the first year. I have, however, taught at all levels from non-science major courses through the graduate physics curriculum. My education includes a bachelor's degree in physics from Amherst College and a doctorate from Stanford University. During my career I spent time at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, the University of California, San Diego, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology, and Brandeis University, where I worked for nearly 40 years. I am a firm believer that students learn in STEM fields only by doing, not by merely listening. Thus the core of any tutoring experience with me is working on problems. The most formative experience a student can have is to work through a problem, explaining each step to the tutor as he or she goes through it. Only by explaining the concepts and skills to someone else can one be sure of his or her own understanding. My goal in any tutoring interaction is to assist the student in gaining the necessary skills, knowledge, and confidence to attack any conceivable problem set to him or her by a classroom teacher.

Before I was a tutor, I was a teacher, and before I was a teacher, I was a mentor. I have spent most of my adulthood working with students in some way, shape, or form. I've worked with a lot of students from various backgrounds and across ages. I've also tutored in almost every subject, but math is my specialty. In 2016, I received my Master's degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. I was a licensed teacher when I lived in Massachusetts, and now I am teaching Algebra 1 in New Jersey.

My name is Andrea, and I'm a PhD student in statistics at UW. Before coming to UW, I studied mathematics and statistics at Amherst College with extensive coursework in computer science. My first teaching role was TAing the introductory and intermediate statistics courses at Amherst during my sophomore year. Since then, I've TA'd a data science course, tutored middle schoolers in algebra, and taught quiz sections at UW. I will even be teaching an undergraduate course this summer! I love math and statistics. One of my favorite parts about tutoring is that I have the opportunity to explain and get students excited about topics that are so exciting to me and have so many applications in day-to-day life! I also love seeing concepts "click" for someone. Watching a student gain confidence and grow in their problem-solving abilities is the most rewarding part of this job. Aside from many years of experience tutoring, I am the tutor that will be most committed to your or your child's learning. No matter your age, I'll tailor my approach to teaching to a way that works best for you and maximizes what you get out of each lesson.

I graduated Amherst College summa cum laude with a degree in neuroscience in 2014. After graduating I completed a master's degree in biochemistry at the University of Cambridge in England. I then worked as self-employed tutor for a few months before starting a teaching fellowship in Colombia, where I taught high school English. I am currently interviewing for medical school for matriculation in August 2017.I have a variety of teaching and tutoring experiences, including working as a self-employed tutor, an organic chemistry teaching assistant, and a high school English teacher. I primarily tutor math, science, the MCAT, and Spanish. I recognize that success in school depends on study habits and techniques as much as understanding material, so I try to include as many study tips as I can in my sessions. In my free time I enjoy running, reading, and listening to music.

I graduated from Amherst College with a degree in Geology and History. Upon graduation I worked as a full-time Geology teaching assistant and lab tech at Colorado College. I then moved to Memphis, TN to pursue a more traditional teaching career, and taught kindergarten for 2 years. Since then, I have tutored 2nd and 3rd graders in reading comprehension. As a dedicated tutor, my mission is to empower students to achieve their full potential. Drawing from my own educational journey, where personalized tutoring and small group instruction played pivotal roles, I am committed to providing tailored support that recognizes individual learning styles, strengths, and areas for growth. I believe in the capabilities of all students and am passionate about cultivating a love for learning beyond traditional academic settings, particularly through fostering a deep appreciation for reading. In my current role as a Park Ranger, I educate the public about local environments and advocate for their conservation. This experience not only enhances my ability to communicate complex ideas effectively but also underscores my commitment to education and community engagement. I am eager to bring this passion and expertise into tutoring, where I aim to inspire and empower students on their educational journeys.

I am a graduate of Amherst College. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in Community-Based Learning. I love tutoring students, and I have extensive experience working with students from middle school to high school. Last year I worked with Citizen Schools in Chelsea, MA, teaching 6th grade math and working with small groups of 5th grade English language learners on reading and phonics skills. This year I am working as a Spanish teacher and math and English tutor at Match Charter Public High School. I am excited to tutor a wide range of subjects, including SAT/ACT test prep, Writing/Reading, ESL, math (through Algebra I), and Spanish. When tutoring, I like to push my students to solve problems on their own with guidance from me only when necessary. I also like to have my students teach back concepts after I have explained them. The best test of whether a student has mastered a concept is if they can teach it back. I love helping students reach that 'lightbulb-above-the-head' moment! Some of my hobbies/interests outside of academics include knitting, photography, singing, traveling, reading, and learning Spanish.

Im a recent graduate of Amherst College, in Massachusetts. Im originally from Colorado, but now Ive found myself starting my life in Chicago. I double-majored in Biology and Russian (strange combination, I realize), and I also took a significant number of classes in our schools Theatre and Dance department. I love sitting down with a good book, sci-fi in particular, or just re-reading my well-worn copies of The Hunger Games or the Inheritance Cycle. My first introduction to tutoring started as volunteer work back in 2009, when I assisted my old math teacher in facilitating middle school math club. One year later, I was hired by a local Kumon center, where I worked as an education assistant for both math and reading. At the Kumon center, I worked with a variety of ages, from 3-16, on subjects ranging from basic addition and subtraction through beginning calculus, and from basic sounding out of words to interpretation of Shakespeare and beyond. I also worked as an assistant teacher at my aerial dance studio, working with the performance program for 8-13 year-olds. Once in college, I wound up working as a teaching assistant for the introductory biology lab in my sophomore year, and I worked as a peer tutor for our colleges Russian department as well. I also worked with a non-profit called Reader to Reader that paired grade-school students with a college-age reading buddy to read and discuss books. When Im not working, I enjoy doing ballet and training as a circus artist. Ive been training trapeze and aerial fabric for 7 years, and Ive been performing for 6. I also really enjoy spending time with cats, sewing, and exploring unknown cities, and not necessarily in that order.
