I am passionate about helping others appreciate both reading and the writing process. This enthusiasm shapes the tutoring methods I use. I encourage my students to develop the tools they need to enhance their comprehension skills and become proficient writers. I work patiently with each student, recognizing that everyone has a unique learning style. Through practice and careful observation, I create personalized plans that best suit each individual. Currently, I teach Secondary English and have experience in middle and high school settings across three different states. This background has equipped me to work effectively with both younger and older students.

My passion for the Spanish language began about seven years ago when I was still in high school. It is something I wanted to pursue farther in my life and I have achieved that goal. I have a year experience tutoring university students and non traditional university students with beginning to intermediate/advanced Spanish. It is rewarding when students return to tell me that they did well on a quiz or exam. This was a paid position that I earned, and I had to be appointed and approved by several professors to get the job that I did. This means my grades in Spanish were exceptional. I would love to work with students of any age and would be willing to adapt to different learning styles. As far as other experience goes, I lived and studied in Salamanca, Spain for three months as well as lived and studied in Samara, Monteverde, and Buena Vista, Costa Rica for two weeks. I have also traveled to other Spanish speaking countries such as Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. I have a strong passion for the language and everyday I strive to be better than I was yesterday. Living in these foreign countries helped me learn faster and even more than if I would have stayed in the States, because being forced to speak the language and make mistakes is all part of the learning process and if mistakes aren't made, neither is progress. What makes me an excellent tutor aside from my fluency in the language is my ability to be flexible. I don't have a certain "style" of tutoring, because that may not work for all students. Instead, I ask the students how they would like to best and then I adapt my teaching ways to what I believe they will benefit from the most.

I am a graduate of Shippensburg State University (B.S. Psychology Major, History Minor), Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div. Christian Antiquities) and a Doctoral Candidate at Drew University. I have also studied abroad as a fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. I have over ten years of experience as an Affiliate professor at the graduate and undergraduate levels and have years of experience working with youth in both formal and informal settings. I have tutored students in multiple subjects and have written more college references than I can remember. I am the father of high school all-American athletes and have helped them navigate those waters. I am comfortable teaching a wide range of subjects, but my greatest areas of expertise are Ancient & Modern History, English and Literature, Religion, Psychology and Writing. I have a great appreciation for tutoring in that it is the original method for education. Tutoring affords an opportunity to reach students at their level; discover the learning method that best suits them; and be a part of the joy of mastering subject material. I believe that humor, compassion for the student, and passion for the subject are ingredients for a successful learning experience. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, the outdoors, and watching sports.

Learning is a partnership between the student and the teacher. They both bring valuable experience, ideas, ambitions, and so much much more to the partnership. My education and experience in teaching middle/high school English, along with my years in IT management enable me to deliver this as a tutor: to make what is complex easy to understand and practice.

With 30 years of college teaching experience, there are few economics problems I haven't run into. Despite what many people think, economics comes down to applying a few basic rules and I use lots of practice problems so that students are well prepared. With 2 children with different learning disabilities, I've learned to be creative in teaching.

My name is Amanda Pursel and I am a freshman at Shippensburg University this year. I am majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Psychology. I have a love for working with kids and have been volunteering in classrooms since my junior year of high school. Senior year I spent every day after school in a first grade classroom with kids. On breaks from college, I work as a substitute aid in my school district at home and have helped over 40 kids with different subjects and things they struggle with. I aspire to become a successful first grade teacher one day, and maybe after that even an elementary school guidance counselor. I take working with students very seriously because I hope to make a difference in their lives and allow them to enjoy what they're learning.
