I am a Professional Engineer with degrees in Mechanical and electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh along with an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University. My professional career assignments include product development, engineering and operations management. I also have approximately 12 years as adjunct faculty teaching graduate students for the University of Phoenix in the areas of statistics, project management, quality systems, SPC and mathematics.

My name is Zhaleh BassiriRad and I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering and Japanese at Carnegie Mellon University. I enjoy tutoring because I love sharing knowledge with others, especially in one-on-one sessions, or with a small group. Teaching others is a great way to expand understanding of how other students think and develop ideas, and it allows myself to see new ways to look at problems. While I'm not studying (or helping my friends study), I love to play music (piano, flute, guitar), take a walk through the forest preserve, draw, design/sew clothing, chat with friends, etc. I look forward to contributing to students' learning endeavors!

I am a graduate from Carnegie Mellon University, where I obtained a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Civil Engineering. I have two years of experience tutoring minority middle and high school students in several subjects including Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, Physics, Spanish and other subjects. During my college years I also worked as a teaching assistant for several engineering courses. Throughout my experience as a tutor, I developed a strong passion for helping students achieve their academic goals. I strive to quickly identify the teaching strategies that work best with each student, and focus on using these strategies to explain the underlying concepts that have led to their current difficulties in a given subject. My teaching style is based on a firm belief that the best way to learn is by teaching: I usually have students explain to me what they DO understand, so that I have a better understanding of what they DO NOT fully grasp. Most importantly, I believe in creating a friendly environment, where students can let go of any insecurities and feel comfortable to share and work together with me to achieve their academic goals

I'm currently a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon University.I enjoy working with kids and helping them work through problems they struggle with on their own, teaching them to solve problems by concept, not on an individual basis. In my free time, I enjoy cooking and playing video games.

My goal is to try to help others that need help so that they do not have to do everything by themselves.

My personal philosophy on teaching and learning is founded around my cumulative experiences as a student, instructor, mentor and researcher. Having been an active participant from both sides of the classroom, in university settings, I know that successful learning is synonymous with long term retention, which in-turn facilitates the ability to apply knowledge and think laterally when the opportune moment presents itself in the real-world. To truly learn is to discover knowledge through experience and lots of practice which invokes the confidence to overcome challenges while simultaneously lifting inhibitions in regard to tackling new problems. To facilitate such an experience within a classroom environment is especially possible in subjects like mathematics and the physical sciences, by facilitating a working knowledge of contemporary issues in the science through articulation of real-world examples and providing opportunity for hands-on problem solving through exercises. Scientists, leaders and instructors effectively teach when they simultaneously impart information and nurture an environment that offers students the opportunity to discover a new subject while maintaining a channel for continuous closed-loop feedback, to ensure that the pace of subject-matter delivery and the student-specific rate of retention are in step. My teaching style is a literal embodiment of the above statements.

I am an experienced teacher with two Bachelor's degrees, a Master's degree, and completed Ph.D coursework. I have approximately seven years of teaching experience, and I hold an English certification. I have a passion for all the material I teach, and that allows me to meet my students' learning needs. I recently graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a double major in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering. I am currently working at a start up company in Pittsburgh. I am passionate about learning, regardless of the field, and I strive to do my very best at everything I do. I enjoy helping people learn; I don't want people to feel afraid of the sciences and will work hard to find a method of teaching that makes the subject seem more interesting.

I earned a BA in Philosophy and Italian Literature form the University of Pittsburgh and an MS in Logic and Computation from Carnegie Mellon University. I have taught and served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate level courses in philosophy at both Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pennsylvania. This gives me first-hand knowledge of what level of academic excellence is expected at some of the best universities in the country. All of these courses, with the exception of logic, required students to write essays. A substantial portion of my time was dedicated to helping students improve their academic writing. This experience taught me the most common problems students encounter in academic writing including lack of clarity, redundancy, the inability to structure an argument, and the most common spelling and grammar mistakes. It also forced me to develop ways of getting students to identify and correct these errors. This involved spending a lot of individual time with students and helping them through the revision process. The most important aspect of this was getting them to see that writing is a process. This understanding generally made them more patient and open to feedback.Philosophy and logic are both exceptionally abstract subjects. Teaching them to undergraduates requires patience and the ability to explain things as simply as possible. It is also important to recognize the signs of confusion. Students do not always tell you when they are confused (and sometimes they themselves do not think they are confused), and so it is vital to maintain interaction with students and to continually check for understanding. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of teaching, and I always conveyed my enthusiasm for the subject and the learning process. This is vital to maintain students' motivation and to keep their attention. For my efforts, I was nominated by my students for the Graduate Student Teaching Award at Penn.Since that time, I have continued teaching as a private tutor in English, Writing, Italian, and Philosophy. I have also edited countless undergraduate essays. I particularly enjoy helping students with the writing process. It is extremely satisfying to aid in the development of an important lifelong skill.When I am not tutoring, I enjoy cooking. I am particularly interested in traditional methods of food processing from all over the world. Many of my favorite recipes have been given to me by my students. My other great love is travel. I have lived in Europe and travel often to Italy where I have family.

I am a recent graduate from Carnegie Mellon University with a dual degree in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering. I have several years of tutoring experience in math, English, and broad sciences for kindergarten to high schoolers. Additionally, I have tutored several students for the SAT and ACT who have had favorable results.
