Hello! I'm Dominique Hassinger. I have joined Varsity Tutors in order to help students better understand Physics and Mathematics and to share my passion for those subjects with others. I hope to get people excited about these subjects just as I am and to help enrich students' lives with my personality and knowledge of mathematics and physics. I cannot wait to meet all new students and get to work!!!

I am a graduate of Arcadia University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Biology in the Spring of 2021. In the fall of 2021, I am beginning my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Arcadia as well. I have worked with kids in academic, athletic, and summer camp settings my entire life. I am very passionate about tutoring students in Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and English and Essay Writing. I have only tutored for a very brief time in my life, but I have the experience in rigorous coursework and the empathy to help students obtain their short-term and long-term goals. Education is my most important value. I feel as if I have the knowledge and experience to help students reach their potential and help them with their struggles. In my free time, I enjoy sports, yoga, and spending time outside with friends and family.
As a certified social studies teacher with a degree from Arcadia University in History and Secondary Education, I have expansive experience in and out of the classroom as a tutor and educator. From private tutoring to working as an Advanced Tutor during college to serving as a tutor for City Year Philadelphia, I have experience working with students from a variety of ages, abilities, needs, and interests. In addition, my time in teacher training has taught me the value of differentiated instruction and the power of forming quality relationships with students. I believe that education is the key to success and that, with the right support, each child can succeed. Some of the subjects I tutor include social studies, elementary mathematics, English, and writing. I am most passionate about tutoring history and writing as I believe that exploring our history can inform our future. Outside of tutoring, I love to run, read, cook, and spend time with friends and family.
I am a nationally certified vascular surgery physician assistant. I received my masters in medical science from Arcadia University. I attended Virginia Tech for my bachelors in biological sciences with a minor in chemistry where I graduated with honors. I started tutoring when I was in high school, which showed me how much I loved helping others succeed academically! I was a TA for general chemistry for 3 out of 4 years during my undergrad. I've tutored many students of all different types of learning styles throughout my academic career. I have been very successful in improving not just all of my students grades, but also their comprehension of the topics. I pride myself on developing good rapport with my students, allowing us to work as a team. Im very passionate about medical science, and I love helping students break down these difficult subjects!
I am graduate of Gettysburg College where I earned a degree in Health Sciences in 2013 while also playing football. I later went on to earn his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Arcadia University in Pennsylvania where I graduated in 2020. I spent all of his time in the outpatient orthopedic setting during my clinical rotations. I plans to pursue a Orthopedic Clinical Specialty (OCS) as well as continuing education in Concussion Rehab, Sports Rehab, and certification in the McKenzie Method of Diagnosis and Treatment of the Spine. In my free time, I love to play guitar, cook, exercise, and watch all Philadelphia sports teams.I not only teach my students about their subjects, I also teach them HOW to study. We will work on good study habits and techniques that students will be able to use in all different subjects. And while we learn lets try to minimize stress and have some fun!
For 9 years I was employed as an adjunct instructor and writing tutor at Atlantic Cape Community College (ACCC). I primarily taught World Religions and Introduction to Philosophy. In addition I taught Western Civilization, US History, and Government classes. Many times I have seen the students writing improve as they have worked with me through the term. Even non English speakers have made great strides with my tutoring. Recently I have tutored graduate students taking online courses.Beginning the Fall 2013 I have been employed as an adjunct instructor in philosophy at Ocean County College. In addition to my tutoring at ACCC, I have also tutored Korean students for the SAT at Pilgrim Academy. I tutored Math and Language Arts students at the Davies Middle School, Hamilton Township, NJ. With other tutoring services I have tutored a high school student for all his academics especially with his work in psychology. In addition, this summer I tutored students in SAT and English preparation. Currently, I am tutoring an MBA student online as well as a GRE student. One of my students was the valedictorian at Oakcrest High School and is now a student at Harvard.Prior to my college teaching, I taught junior high social studies for 29 years in Atlantic City, NJ. While in Atlantic City, I chaired the Curriculum Content Committees that rewrote the curriculum to prepare the students to pass the state tests.
As someone with a learning disability (ADD) I know how much difference a good tutor can make in a child's life. I still remember of my former tutors fondly, and it is likely that without their aid at critical points in my development, I would not have gone on to enjoy creative writing, my chosen vocation.I take a measured and personalized approach to tutoring, drawing upon experiences gained while teaching special education, coaching and my own journey from struggling student to gaining my MFA.
I have found that I truly enjoy working one on one with students. Working one on one allows me to get to know the student and allows me to uncover any gaps in their prior knowledge that may be confusing them, or prohibiting them to be successful in their course. I also enjoy working one on one with a student because it gives me more of an opportunity to discover the student's learning style. I could then better instruct the student at their level and using their learning style of the best outcomes.
I am currently a dual-degree graduate student studying International Peace and Conflict Resolution and Counseling Psychology. I graduated from LaSalle University with majors in Communications and Sociology and minors in Film Studies, Central Eastern European Studies, and Spanish. While at LaSalle, I received training to tutor students with different learning styles and cultures in statistics, sociology, economics, religion, and writing.I enjoy tutoring because I love seeing students succeed and gain confidence in their abilities. I seek to adapt and customize my methods to best meet the student's needs and learning style in order to make learning fun and effective. My job is not just to help the student pass a class or test but to learn study skills that will be beneficial for their future coursework.I love being creative with my tutoring methods as well as in everyday life. When I am not tutoring or studying, I work as a professional actress and model as well as an occasional makeup artist and writer.
I have always loved working with students and have made it my personal passion to be an enthusiastic, creative, and a kind mentor and teacher. As a Spanish teacher in the Philadelphia School District I have seen first hand how creating a positive, nurturing environment within each and every student allows for greater achievement academically and personally. I want to make a difference in our community and truly believe that I can support the youth of today best by giving them the skills they need to be successful in the future.
When aiding my students with their writing assignments, I experience a certain frustration at their lack of exploration. No matter the nature of the assignment, students are taught to seek the right answer in the most direct manner. In this age driven by state assessments, students are encouraged to find what???s considered to be the correct answer quickly with little room for exploration or a deeper level of critical thinking. Students are often encouraged to get from point A to point B in a quick and efficient manner without stopping to discover along the way. Although students achieve their goal of completing an assignment in a timely manner, the writing that results lacks originality of thought that can only be discovered through exploration. As an adjunct, I stress the importance of exploration for the good of my students??? creative and academic endeavors. These efforts make both of us not only better students, but help to ensure that we can increase of knowledge in all areas of our lives no matter what path they may take. I believe that teachers who demonstrate curiosity and passion about a subject area motivate students to learn. I believe that W.B. Yeats captured the exhilaration of teaching when he wrote: ???Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.???My philosophy of teaching is to create an environment that allows for supervised exploration. I believe that learner-oriented teaching promotes learning that is both purposeful and enduring. However, to really transition from a teacher-centered learning environment to a more learner-centered environment, students must identify learning needs in themselves, and assess their own progress. As an adjunct instructor, I encourage my students to participate in active conversation about literature as well as their own composition process. In my opinion, first year students will benefit more from an instructor who will listen in addition to guide them towards a more cohesive writing style that will last throughout their collegiate and professional careers. In summary, the learning process is enhanced by??? a collegial relationship between teacher and learner??? evident pride in scholarship by the teacher??? challenge of the learner???s knowledge??? clarification of underlying structure by the teacher??? mutual feedback.
I am a certified teacher with licensing in early childhood, elementary, special education, reading, and ESL. I have been tutoring for eight years. I specialize in reading instruction for those with Dyslexia through the use of Orton Gillingham and Wilson.
