I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Prior to returning to grad school, I taught middle school and high school English in Columbia, South Carolina for six years and middle school English in New Jersey for one year. I have also taught ISEE/SSAT prep. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I served my school as both the yearbook sponsor and as the lead mock trial coach for my competitive middle school team. I enjoy working with students on polishing their writing so it is publication ready!

I have a Master's Degree in English from the University of Tulsa (currently pursuing my doctorate in Literature at St John's University). I also have a 110 hour TEFL certification with teaching practice, and seven years of experience teaching ESL. I have taught in Turkey, Poland, and to international students in the United States. I have taught all ages and levels, from children as young as five to retired adults, Beginners to Proficiency as well as Cambridge Exam and TOEFL students, along with Business English and private tutoring classes.I've also worked as an ESL teacher trainer, as a consultant at university writing centers, advising students at every stage of the writing process, on projects ranging from freshman statements of purpose to doctoral dissertations, and I teach university World Literature courses as well.I enjoy teaching and tutoring in general, but I'm especially passionate about literature, writing, and ESL at all levels. I also enjoy helping students prepare for Standardized Tests, and we usually have the best results prepping for the Critical Reading and Writing portions of the exams, and of course I specialize in TOEFL and other ESL exams.I feel that I've been fortunate to have a lot of great opportunities in my life, many of them thanks to the education I've been lucky enough to receive, and I feel great about being able to provide more and better opportunities to others. Teaching is a truly great part of my life, and I love being able to teach, learn from, and really engage with my students. In my free time, I enjoy playing basketball, watching movies, reading, and traveling, and I have a terrible addiction to terrible television shows, which I also enjoy.
Helping my six children succeed in school sparked my passion for education and tutoring, which led me to pursue formal teaching training. I received Montessori Teacher Training from UCSB and completed the Waldorf grades teacher program through the WISC, later becoming a grades assistant at Highland Hall Waldorf School. During my children's school years, I also volunteered for several years at a local Kumon reading and math center, where I gained valuable experience supporting students' academic growth. In recent years, I've focused on online teaching, specifically working with the Ignite Reading program, which partners with public schools on the East Coast to help children improve their reading skills. My approach to tutoring is centered around creating a nurturing and supportive environment where students feel confident to explore and learn at their own pace. I believe in the importance of individualized attention and strive to tailor my teaching methods to each student's unique needs.
I have a Master's Degree in Mathematics from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from the University of the Virgin Islands. I have taught college and high school mathematics and dance. While teaching I also tutored students. I am from the US Virgin Islands and get along well with people of diverse cultures. I am most passionate about math (algebra and trigonometry) and English. I love helping struggling students see the beauty in these subjects. I put my math skills to practical use when I was a crane operator in the VI.
Experienced and results-driven educator with four years of classroom teaching experience. I believe in relationships with learners first and foremost and making learning as fun as possible!
I earned my degree from USC-Aiken in English. However, I tutor mathematics from Pre-Algebra to AP Calculus BC. I have taught public high school math for 30 years. I retired because things have been getting weird in public schools (the bureaucracy not the students). I prefer one-on-one tutoring because then I can really tailor it to a student's needs. Over the course of my career, I have learned to tease out the confusion students are facing. Sometimes I do get overly excited though. When that happens, telling me to calm down actually works.
