Hello! I'm Lizz, a middle school math teacher working in Chicago Public Schools. I love to see students go from describing themselves as "not a math person" to feeling like they meet exciting challenges in math and other parts of their lives. Even though I love working in the classroom, I feel like tutoring allows me to make more of an impact and connect with students.

I have had three careers: non-profit management, for-profit management, and teaching. It is teaching that has been the most rewarding and enjoyable for me, but having experience in the others means that I know what employers are looking for. I earned my B.A. in Economics from the University of North Dakota Summa Cum Laude, with minors in History, Sociology and Political Science, and a Master of Education from Montana State University with a GPA of 4.0. I have also taken classes from Macalester College in St. Paul and the University of Minnesota, so I know what colleges are looking for. I have raised three children, all of whom graduated from institutions of higher learning and now have successful careers. I have been lucky to have traveled widely, to all the inhabited continents except Australia, including three years of teaching at the American School in Georgetown, Guyana, so I can bring informative and fun views and examples to our studies.

I earned my M.A. in English/Creative Writing and my B.A. in Print Journalism from the University of North Dakota. I have years of teaching and tutoring experience, both inside and outside of the classroom, at a number of colleges and universities, including the U. of North Dakota, Embry-Riddle, National American University and Estrella Mountain Community College. I have taught such courses as Creative Writing, Fiction, Technical, and Business Writing and Composition 1 and 2. I am the author of six books, and have published scores of essays, articles, poems, short stories, and photographs in publications across the country. My media experience extends to newspaper, magazine and television work, as well as in public relations for the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, the North Dakota Army National Guard, and with the U.S. Forest Service. I am very well read, articulate, and have a comprehensive grasp of American Literature. I truly love to work one-on-one with students and adults who are motivated by writing and the world of literature. I try to identify the skills sets that my students possess and extend my tutoring with them beyond that point. I enjoy tutoring such subjects as reading, writing, history, social studies and geography. I am, first and foremost, a family man, who is happiest when hiking, exploring and sight-seeing with his wife and children.

I have always been enthusiastic about school and learning since elementary school. Although school did not always come easily for me, I learned the value of hard work and asking for help when I needed it. Since elementary school, I have always enjoyed math and science classes the most.After graduating college in North Dakota, I moved to New York City to pursue my education degree. I taught middle school math for seven years at all grade levels. This experience provided me the opportunity to work with many different students and I learned that each student is extremely unique. In 2011, I moved back to Minnesota and taught both special education and general education students again focusing mainly on teaching math.I believe that all students can learn and I have experienced this firsthand. I have high expectations for each student I teach and work hard to learn individual learning styles and life interests. By building relationships in this way, I believe that real learning takes place.

My name is Jake Turner. I am a 5 year veteran math and science teacher with lots of experience also helping student's one on one. I am passionate about learning and the natural sciences. I am fascinated with outer space and love talking about rockets and other aspects and activities conducted by space programs. I am here to help student's through tough academic times and get them excited again about learning and what they can do with their knowledge!

I am a graduate of University of North Dakota, Mayville State University with my Bachelor's of Science in Early Childhood Education. I have continued my education and am also qualified to teaching English Language Arts through the Middle School grades. I currently teach at a Kindergarten level and love watching their minds blossom and grow. In my experience, I have helped students with Standardized Testing, academic growth in Reading, Writing, and Math, and continued to foster a love for learning. I am a first-year medical student at the University of North Dakota. I previously graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. Prior to my matriculation, I worked in the Emergency Department for two years as a medical scribe. In this role, I was able to learn about medicine and the healthcare system through the providers I worked with on a daily basis. These mentor relationships increased my passion for education and my willingness to serve as an educator to others. Using the skills I have developed as a camp counselor, chemistry tutor, and pre-med mentor, I look forward to teaching a wide variety of individuals on the Varsity Tutors platform. My subjects of interest include the basic sciences and preparation for Standardized Tests. I would describe my teaching style as informal and conceptual in order to obtain foundational proficiency and skills. When I am not in school or tutoring, I can be found spending time with my wife, cat, and dog.

I received my Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of North Dakota. I also received a Master of Public Health and Master of Public Administration from the University of Illinois. I am currently working towards a graduate certificate in teaching and learning at the University of Colorado-Denver. Since graduation, I have worked extensively throughout the water industry on many projects that provide safe drinking water and waste water systems to families and communities throughout the United States. I am a licensed Professional Engineer and am active in may organizations throughout the engineering community. While I tutor a broad range of STEM subjects, I am most passionate about math and chemistry. I am a firm believer in a strong education and believe it to be a critical component to having a high quality of life and prepares individuals in becoming the best stewards of the world.

I have five years of experience teaching English at the post-secondary level, including reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar. This includes four years teaching in Chinese universities, as well as teaching English for Academic Purposes in community college. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Education in English Language Learning (Teaching English as a Second or Other Language). I have dual Master of Science degrees in Microbiology and Integrative Biomedical Sciences: Emphasis Epidemiology. My first masters degree was from the University of North Dakota, where I also did my undergraduate work; major in Biology, minor in Chemistry. I have experience in all facets of life. My first job was working as a tech under federal work study for Dr. Jeffery Lang. His research focus was on temperature effects of reptilian species. I did developmental staging on turtle embryo's and after hatch sex determination. From there I move into graduate school where I was awarded a supplemental grant to my Principle Investigator's parent grant on Penicillin Binding Protein function in directing synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. These investigation had implications in antibiotic resistance and moreover general physiological principles governing bacteria. I then moved on to teaching Microbiology, Pathogenic Microbiology and Immunology at Chadron State College in Nebraska. Then I moved to Lincoln to pursue my second Master of Science degree in Epidemiology by studying Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. The chronic enteritis disease caused by this bacteria is difficult to diagnosed due to many reasons, but most importantly the 2 month growth life cycle exhibited by the organism. I then worked in the food science industry for 1.5 years screening for enteric bacterium E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, Staphylococcus, and Clostridial species. This job was rewarding but very stressful in industry turn-around standards. I moved into a government position on a temporary contract for Epidemiological surveillance of the enteric disease caused by these organisms. In this position I interviewed individuals who developed these afflictions to determine source contaminants. I also relayed information to those patients about the disease to help them prevent occurrence again. And, that brings us full circle to this point whereby I love teaching biological principles to individuals of all walks of life. I am very fluent in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, and Epidemiology including biostatistical principles found in epidemiological studies.

I have a undergraduate degree in music, accounting, and an MBA in Finance and Computer Science. I've taught finance and computer science at the college / university level. I've tutored students in math, computer science, software applications, finance, accounting, and photography. On the side I do professional photography.I enjoy teaching all age ranges. After 40 years of teaching experience I have consolidated my own teaching philosophy, which, in essence, is: " Encourage students' learning by dividing them into study groups dealing with micro theses related to syllabus topics. A problem to be solved should be in the center of each micro thesis. Solve the problem and represent the solution by employing the proper technology. Specify the contribution of each student within a certain group. At the beginning of each semester make clear to students the proportion of this job towards other course requirements." I am currently a graduate student at the University of North Dakota studying Environmental Engineering and had a bachelor's degree in Geophysics from the University of Lagos. I received a Bachelor of Science studying Psychology at the University of North Dakota. During my first year of undergraduate study, I found myself fascinated while studying the human body. This inspired me to declare a minor in Biology and enroll in Pre-Medicine coursework. During these four years, I worked at a hospital, interned in a biomedical research lab, and coached Special Olympics. After leaving my job at the hospital, I began working at an elementary school with special education students who had unique social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. This was a valuable learning experience where I explored methods to adapt my teaching to the specific needs of individual students. This fall, I studied anatomical science courses in Washington, DC. I will be starting medical school this year and hope to eventually practice in adolescent psychiatry.
