I am a currently a Junior Nursing student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. I will be graduating in May 2026 with my Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. I am a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician as well as a Certified Nursing Aide. I have previous teaching experience as I used to be a color guard coach and pride myself on providing a safe environment for students to grow more confident in themselves and their own skills. I love to teach anatomy and physiology as well as pathophysiology. These are such foundational courses that many students struggle in. I believe that these courses require confidence and someone to help guide you towards finding a passion for it. I personally struggled with anatomy until I had a teacher who helped me grow my confidence, so I would love to be able to do that for other students.

I have been teaching for over 18 years. I have taught middle-school, high-school, and college-level Computer Science and Business classes. I have tutored elementary, middle-school, and high-school students in math and algebra. My teaching philosophy centers around creating a supportive learning environment that empowers students to become confident problem solvers. The biggest thing I focus on is learning about my student. Every student has different needs and ways that they learn, and once I figure that out, the student will be more successful. I have helped several students with ADD, ADHD, anxiety, and high-functioning autism over the years. One of the best things about teaching is when you see a student have that a-ha moment and know that they finally understand and that all their hard work has paid off.

I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville majoring in Biological Sciences and minoring in Chemistry and Business Administration. After undergrad, I plan on attending optometry school to become a certified optometrist.I began tutoring in high school, working with mostly elementary school students, but I have always made sure to be a helping hand in class for my peers and even now I get the occasional text for help with random homework. This year I was also hired by my university to be a tutor/teacher aide for introductory chemistry. I am available to tutor many levels of math, biology, chemistry, and ACT test prep. My tutoring style is very hands on. I like to follow along with the student as they do practice problems, find where they are having trouble, and focus on amending the issue. I also am very personable, as I believe students are more confident and learn better when they are comfortable with their tutor. My favorite subject to tutor is biology because it was always my favorite class and it encompasses so much of our lives from cellular functions all the way to biomes.Outside of tutoring, you can find me binging Netflix, playing video games on my computer, or wrestling with my incredibly adorable kitten, Pancake.

Math is an exciting and rewarding discipline. After getting my bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Alabama in 2009, I taught and tutored arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, calculus, and trigonometry through various venues including Manor College (2012-2013), Blueprint Schools Network (2015-2016), and Kumon Math and Reading Center (2017-present) as well as a few private middle schools. Mathematical proficiency is composed of two parts--procedural skill and logical reasoning. They are both important, since being quick and accurate with arithmetic can help one significantly with understanding the logical component of higher math. The best learning often comes with attempting a tough problem and discovering several approaches to solving it. Students that work through a problem until they "get stuck" are already learning a lot more than if they had never attempted it. I believe that tutors are the most helpful when the student has already struggled with a concept, because the tutor can hone in on the specifics. Math is a skill that gets better with practice, like sports or music. I keep my arithmetic skills sharp through tutoring at Kumon, and my higher math skills through self-study with my college textbooks and tutoring higher math students. I plan on getting a Master's in math in the near future. When I am not teaching, I am engaged in the domestic arts while singing or watching my nieces and nephew grow up.

I am certified to teach English Language Arts (grades 6-12). My target age group is middle school because that is where young students first begin to write with individuality, style, and purpose. I enjoy helping students improve their grammar and reading skills, and I also enjoy helping them improve their study skills. I believe writing is a vital skill that anyone can learn, a skill that can carry you far in life, regardless of the career path you choose. I earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from LSU-Baton Rouge in 1983, and I earned a master of arts in teaching (English) at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2022. During my 36 years as a journalist, I worked at nine newspapers in four states, including The Times in Shreveport, La.; The Advocate in Baton Rouge, La.; the Miami Herald in Miami, Fla.; and three Alabama dailies (the Mobile Press-Register, Montgomery Advertiser, and Tuscaloosa News). I have also worked part-time as a substitute teacher. My hobbies are reading, writing, singing, sewing, and baking.
