I'm a student at Tufts University majoring in Biomedical Engineering with an intended minor in English. I've been tutoring throughout high school and college in a variety of core STEM and humanities courses, working in both a paid and volunteer capacity. Building a fundamental understanding of a subject in order to develop the flexibility to solve challenging, out-of-the box problems has always been my favorite way both to learn and to teach.Through my major, I've had the opportunity to integrate math, physics, chemistry, and biology in the context of medical innovation. My experiences as a multilingual poet with 20+ years of facilitating workshops in person and online, as a college professor of English composition and literature (6 years) and college admissions counselor (4 years), I have a wealth of resources I access in order to tailor my teaching and tutoring to the students who work with me. I am currently studying Civil Engineering and Computer Science at Tufts University. Degree expected May of 2016. I've been passionate about helping students ever since I was a student myself in middle school and high school. I used to tutor my friends and help them with their homework. After I graduated from high school, I got my bachelor's in Fine Arts from Tufts University and a CTEFL certificate from Boston Academy of English. For the past 5 years, I've been living and working in Laos, where I've had the pleasure of teaching so many incredible students. Examining the small processes and components in this world has been an intriguing habit of mine since I was in middle school. This passion made me fall in love with biochemistry in high school. Studying human metabolic pathways, including chemical reactions and cell communication, perfectly fulfilled my passion for understanding how smaller and simple processes work in conjugation with each other to create an intricate and fully functional larger organism.Now, I am a Biochemistry major at Tufts University, and I have aspirations to attend medical school after my undergraduate studies. In college I tutored students through the university's tutoring center for three years before tutoring privately again in my last year. I've seen students who've never taken a course before to those who are coming back to school after working or serving in the military.While in high-school I realized I had a knack for explaining subjects and concepts in many different ways, often relating them to students in new analogies or different aspects. In this way I was able to communicate concepts, thoughts, and material more effectively. I've always been the type to help out other students in need and am often the person people reach out to for quick tips. The way I have advanced and polished this trait and the techniques I use over my college years as a tutor working for both the university as well as privately.I like to ask my students questions to see how much and what they know before diving into problems. When we do problems, I like to work a few out with a student and explain what I'm doing in each step and why. Then I slowly hand the reigns off to the student to work through the problems more and more independently while explaining back to me what they're doing. This way I know the student is learning the material properly and will be able to work without my help in the future. I am an incoming, second year Physics student at Tufts University.
