I'm a graphic designer, illustrator, and creative educator with 22+ years of hands-on experience turning ideas into visuals that actually work. Design isn't just something I doit's how I see the world. It is also something I've been teaching for 20+ years. I bring a deep, practical knowledge of graphic design, Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesignyou name it), illustration, 2-dimensional design, and foundational art principles into everything I teach. From typography and layout to color theory, composition, and visual storytelling, I love helping students understand not just the how, but the why behind great design. My approach is energetic, encouraging, and rooted in real-world experience. I've spent decades designing for brands, businesses, and creative projects of all kinds, so I know what it takes to move from classroom concepts to professional-level work. I'm big on experimentation, creative confidence, and learning how to push ideas further (while still meeting deadlinesbecause yes, that matters too). If you're excited to build strong design fundamentals, sharpen your creative voice, and learn from someone who genuinely loves this craft, you're in the right place. Let's create bold work, ask smart questions, and have a little fun along the way.

I am a professional artist and am interested in teaching those serious about art. I teach the basic underlying foundations of art; the science of art: the science of drawing, composition, color. If you understand this you understand these basic principles to anything in the field of art.(It's like learning to write by understanding the alphabet as opposed to memorizing lots of words.)And I'm a big fan of non-serious...and the two are not mutually exclusive.

I love teaching because I love learning. There is nothing as exciting to me as being with a student of any age or developmental stage, while their eyes are opening to new ideas and ways of thinking.

As a passionate artist with a strong belief that education should be personalized and hands-on, I believe in fostering a collaborative learning atmosphere for students. I have been training in art since I was a child. I started my journey at the Old Donations School, followed by the Governor's School for the Arts, and finally, as a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). While at RISD, I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts, specializing in Jewelry and Metalsmithing as well as a Concentration in Literature. I have 10 years of experience teaching people from different walks of life. My first experience was as a Teaching Assistant for 3D Foundations and Jewelry and Metals Continuing Education Classes at RISD, where I had the honor of helping students plan and execute projects, contributing to critiques, and helping with grading. I also had my first tutoring job at RISD, helping people write papers expressing what their art represented. After I graduated, I taught classes in sewing, crafting, and beading at multiple retail stores in Virginia Beach. These experiences have allowed me to interact with a variety of students from different walks of life and taught me how to adjust my teaching style to each individual. In my personal art tutoring I cover a variety of artistic mediums, including 2D design, drawing (charcoal, pastels, graphite, ink & markers), mixed media, painting (watercolor, guoche & acrylic), 3D design, sculpture, sewing (corsetry, costuming & tailoring), and jewelry making (silversmithing, goldsmithing, basic forging & beading). I am particularly passionate about teaching the foundations of drawing, including figure drawing and perspective.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors who graduated from or attended Rhode Island School of Design bring direct experience with rigorous design education and creative problem-solving. They understand RISD's distinctive curriculum, teaching philosophy, and the specific skills emphasized in the program—from foundation courses to specialized design disciplines. This insider perspective helps them guide students through coursework and prepare for the unique demands of design education.

RISD alumni excel in teaching design fundamentals, digital design, illustration, graphic design, fine arts, 3D modeling, photography, and art history. Many also tutor in foundational subjects like drawing, color theory, and design thinking. Because RISD emphasizes cross-disciplinary learning, these tutors often bring knowledge across multiple areas and can help students develop the creative and technical skills the program values.

Yes. Tutors who attended RISD understand what admissions committees look for and can provide valuable feedback on portfolio work, artist statements, and creative projects. They can guide you through the portfolio development process, help refine your artistic voice, and share insights about the application experience—all based on their own journey through RISD's selective admissions process.

RISD alumni tutors have completed the same courses you're taking and understand the expectations, project requirements, and teaching styles of RISD faculty. Whether you're working on a foundation course, major-specific class, or elective, they can help you approach assignments more effectively, troubleshoot creative blocks, and develop work that meets RISD's high standards.

Learning from an RISD graduate means getting mentorship from someone who has navigated the program's intensive, project-based learning model and developed professional-level creative skills. They can share strategies for managing workload, developing a cohesive body of work, and thinking critically about design decisions—practical wisdom that comes from lived experience in the program.

Your first session is a chance to discuss your goals—whether that's improving a specific skill, getting feedback on a project, or preparing for a course. The tutor will learn about your current work, understand what you're struggling with, and share how their RISD background can help. From there, you'll develop a personalized plan that builds on your strengths and addresses your needs.

Absolutely. While tutors have expertise in their own disciplines, RISD's integrated curriculum means many alumni have broad knowledge across design, fine arts, and creative fundamentals. Even if their major differs from yours, they likely have relevant experience and can help with foundational skills, creative problem-solving, and design thinking that apply across disciplines.
