I'm Stephanie, an enthusiastic, fun and patient teaching artist and certified art teacher with more than 25 years of experience. I've got a BFA in graphic communications/illustrations, and an MAT in art education PreK-12. I've taught multi-media art to ages 5-adult in many settings, including: -24 years as a contractual educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art -my own art classroom in a high school -residencies at public schools and senior centers -libraries and museums -homeschool groups -private tutoring I have special expertise in bookmaking, and lots of experience teaching drawing and techniques in multiple art media! I am passionate about sharing my love of art with others. I can teach techniques for drawing, painting, clay, and numerous other art media. My teaching style is to directly engage students where they are, and push them just enough to skill-build without being frustrated. I engage directly with students on their current level to help them move forward at the pace that fits their own journey. I look forward to being your guide through the world of art-making!

I recently graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration and focused in animation. I will be tutoring for animation. I've always loved the artform, and want to help others who share a similar dream to work in animation someday.

I've spent decades designing for brands, businesses, and creative projects of all kinds, so I know what it takes to move from classroom concepts to professional-level work. I am a professional artist and am interested in teaching those serious about art. I teach the basic underlying foundations of art; the science of art: the science of drawing, composition, color. If you understand this you understand these basic principles to anything in the field of art.(It's like learning to write by understanding the alphabet as opposed to memorizing lots of words.)And I'm a big fan of non-serious...and the two are not mutually exclusive.

I love teaching because I love learning. There is nothing as exciting to me as being with a student of any age or developmental stage, while their eyes are opening to new ideas and ways of thinking.

As a passionate artist with a strong belief that education should be personalized and hands-on, I believe in fostering a collaborative learning atmosphere for students. I have been training in art since I was a child. I started my journey at the Old Donations School, followed by the Governor's School for the Arts, and finally, as a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). While at RISD, I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts, specializing in Jewelry and Metalsmithing as well as a Concentration in Literature. I have 10 years of experience teaching people from different walks of life. My first experience was as a Teaching Assistant for 3D Foundations and Jewelry and Metals Continuing Education Classes at RISD, where I had the honor of helping students plan and execute projects, contributing to critiques, and helping with grading. I also had my first tutoring job at RISD, helping people write papers expressing what their art represented. After I graduated, I taught classes in sewing, crafting, and beading at multiple retail stores in Virginia Beach. These experiences have allowed me to interact with a variety of students from different walks of life and taught me how to adjust my teaching style to each individual. In my personal art tutoring I cover a variety of artistic mediums, including 2D design, drawing (charcoal, pastels, graphite, ink & markers), mixed media, painting (watercolor, guoche & acrylic), 3D design, sculpture, sewing (corsetry, costuming & tailoring), and jewelry making (silversmithing, goldsmithing, basic forging & beading). I am particularly passionate about teaching the foundations of drawing, including figure drawing and perspective.
