I am a recently retired Secondary Math teacher. I taught at the high school level for 40 years. During that time I also tutored students after school. I have taught/tutored all classes from Algebra I to Pre-Calc, and I enjoy teaching and tutoring all Math subject areas. My last 15 years I primarily taught AP Statistics, Algebra II, Pre-Calc, and Trigonometry.I received my BS degree from Ferris State University and achieved a Masters Equivalent from Eastern Michigan University. As education has changed, so has my teaching philosophy. I view myself as a source, as opposed to the source of information. I try to get my students to not only know how to solve a problem but to understand why those steps have to be taken. I also encourage them to look for alternative ways to approach a situation. I believe these techniques help the students to develop a stronger understanding of Mathematics.In addition to teaching for 40 years, I also coached basketball and golf at the high school level, and I was a head varsity coach for both sports for over 25 years. At home I enjoy playing golf, working on my lawn and garden, bird watching, and working out.

I graduated from The University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and finished a Masters in Biology at Eastern Michigan University. I enjoy helping others, which included teaching kids at my church, tutoring middle and high school students during study hall, working with youth in after school programs, helping adults who wish to improve their English, and helping friends who home school their kids. My most preferred subjects are Biology and Economics because I like knowing how things work and how people think on a larger scale. While it is important to know facts or the application of facts, I feel that learning how to learn and critical thinking are important and are built on the foundation of a trusting relationship existing between the tutor and the student. Currently, I am a student at Eastern Michigan University studying linguistics and Japanese. My aim is to graduate in 2017 and continue to teach Japanese and ESL.My experience has varied significantly over the years in terms of subjects taught, age group, and even location. I taught ESL to Japanese students online through SkimaTalk for a few years, then went on to teach Japanese to a high school student in California and another college student in Michigan, and also taught French to a homeschooled student online for 1 year (he is still my student!).
