I have taught several years at the undergraduate level in New York City and in New Jersey. Although I was completely comfortable lecturing during my large classes, as an instructor, I made every effort to work one-on-one with my students during office hours and through appointments. I am currently working as a research associate, yet I plan on teaching at the college level again in the future. I would love to continue to hone my craft as a teacher and educator through working with Varsity Tutors!

Communication is key to any role, and I strive for clarity by relying on the subject matter to speak for itself. My goal is to communicate the knowledge to the best of my ability and leave any opinions, biases and judgements out of the equation.
I am a graduate of Boston College and The University of Pittsburgh School of Law. I received a Bachelor of Arts in both English and Economics,I am a graduate of The College of William and Mary. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Literary & Cultural Studies with a focus on philosophy and theater. Since graduation, I have traveled extensively, tutoring children of immigrants in California for the “No Child Left Behind” program; adults in Manhattan looking to improve their English (as I am a certified ESL instructor); and private clients in the Veneto region of Italy. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, and History. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for Standardized Tests, we always seem to have the most fun (with remarkable advancements) prepping for the Critical Reading and Writing portions of the exams. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading that which enriches my life, yoga, running, and the game of ice hockey.
I have an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and a graduate degree from Boston College. I received my Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown with a major in History and a minor in Government. I focused on both U.S. and Middle Eastern history at Georgetown, and was invited to write an Honors thesis for the History department my senior year. After graduating from Georgetown, I began my studies at Boston College where I received a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. I am now a history teacher at a public school in Massachusetts, where I teach U.S. History I and II, as well as Modern U.S. History. Not surprisingly, my favorite subject to teach and to tutor is History. I am most passionate about the history of the U.S. since 1945, but as I am sure most of my students will attest, I truly do find the history of any nation or time period fascinating. I also enjoy teaching and tutoring for the SATs and other standardized exams, in part because I believe that any student can improve once he or she knows how to study, and most importantly, how to build the endurance to take a standardized test as lengthy as the SAT. I approach the SATs much in the same way that I approach running – if unit tests in school are one-mile warm-ups, then the SAT is a marathon. With the right training (and dedication), I firmly believe that any student can improve. I have taught SAT prep classes in a variety of capacities. I worked for a major SAT prep company while in graduate school, and also piloted my district’s SAT prep course (which I designed the curricula for). I take a collaborative approach to teaching, and both in the classroom and one-on-one, I believe that the best way for a student to learn material is to move beyond recall and work toward synthesis and analysis for complete understanding. When I’m not teaching or tutoring, I love to read history books (especially those about Robert Kennedy), run (long distances – in all types of weather), and travel. The most incredible place I have been is Tanzania – if I hadn’t packed three massive Teddy Roosevelt biographies in my suitcase, I definitely would have brought home many more souvenirs.
I received my Bachelor of Science from Connecticut College with a major in Human Development. After graduating, I worked as a teacher in the Boston Public School system for two years, before earning a Master of Social Work from Boston College. I am currently a first year law student at Northeastern University School of Law.While teaching I worked with special education students who experienced a number of different learning challenges. Although I taught 7th grade math, I most enjoy tutoring in reading and writing. I love helping students learn to express themselves more thoroughly through language. Outside of academia I enjoy reading and spending time outside, being active. In high school I was a competitive swimmer, which lead to my playing on the varsity water polo team while I was in college.
I pride myself in being able to help simplify challenging problems for students, as well as offer mentorship and moral support in the absence of a teacher for the student's academic success.
I've been tutoring since I was 14, working with students one-on-one, online, and in classrooms. I recently completed a BA/MS in Biology and Quantitative Finance at Boston College and now work at a Boston biotech startup. I tutor math, biology, and reading/writing, with math being my favorite subject because it builds problem-solving skills and confidence. My tutoring style is supportive, engaging, and curiosity driven. I believe questions spark diligence, and diligence leads to success. Many of my students have gone on to achieve wonderful things, and I'm proud to be their go-to resource along the way. Outside of academics, I'm an avid reader and I love thoughtful debate, which keeps my teaching style creative and adaptable.
Hi, my name is Cara and I am eager to be a tutor! I am currently working towards my M.Ed. in Elementary Education and have had many years of experience working/volunteering in classrooms. I have been in PreK, Kindergarten, Second grade, and Fourth grade classrooms and I also have previous experience tutoring. Thank you for checking out my page!
I graduated from Colorado State University in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering. I am certified as an E.I. and a P.E. Currently, I am working towards a master's degree in Social Work with a focus on Latinx communities at Boston College. The bulk of my tutoring experience comes from my time in the Peace Corps. I served as a Community Environmental Conservation volunteer in Panama from 2015 to 2018. I co-taught Science, Environmental Education, and English in a multi grade one room schoolhouse with students aged 5 to 12, I also tutored middle and high school students in English after school. I have also been a youth mentor and enjoy making connections with students and encouraging them in their academic journeys. I worked for four years as an engineer at a small municipality in the water quality group where I managed the water quality database and performed process optimizations for water and wastewater. While I no longer practice engineering, I am very passionate about water and wastewater treatment and processes and am most excited to help future engineers achieve their certifications. My philosophy around engineering exams is that while it is important to know how to do the problems, it is even more important to learn how to think about problem solving. In my spare time I enjoy reading, hiking, camping, and skiing. I love backpacking and always spend at least a week of the summer on solo backpacking trips.
Having taught politics at the University of Glasgow in the UK, I know what the top universities expect of their students and I know what it takes to get there. That is why my tutoring approach not only focuses on helping my students learn essential material; it also focuses on helping my students learn how to learn for themselves so that they can become independent and critically-minded thinkers. I do this by creating a challenging yet entertaining learning environment. With a strong academic background in government, history, economics and literature, I understand the challenges my students face in each subject. Having also worked as a personal trainer, I learned what it takes to motivate my clients physically and mentally. Though academia is more tweed than tube socks, I still employ the same enthusiastic approach when tutoring to ensure that my students develop the necessary learning skills and motivation to succeed. Most importantly, I take tutoring personally, and thus I am personally invested in the success of all my students.
Hi, I'm Jackson! I tutor Math, Reading, History, and Science and specialize in turning confusion into confidence. Whether you're catching up or aiming for the top, I'll build a strategy that works for you. Let's get to work book a session today!
I believe that the goal of education is to spark the curious nature of students, so that students are interested in exploring and learning more. The role of the teacher is to foster this curiosity and interest in learning and to guide students by clearly explaining difficult concepts. I have many years of experience tutoring students of all ages. Most recently, I worked as a teacher and tutor in Madrid, Spain, where I taught English as a Foreign Language. Before that, I worked in New York as a tutor with a private tutoring company. I have tutored students in many academic subjects including English, Spanish, Math, Science and History.
As a passionate tutor with a Bachelor's degree in Human-Centered Engineering from Boston College. I have over 7 years of experience in helping students grasp complex concepts in subjects like Algebra, AP Physics, and Mechanical Engineering. My teaching philosophy centers on fostering a supportive learning environment where each student feels empowered to ask questions and engage deeply with the material. I strive to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, making learning relevant and exciting. I am dedicated to nurturing academic success and instilling confidence in my students, and I find immense joy in witnessing their growth and achievements. Outside of tutoring, I am a lifelong lover and performer of music and comedy and spend lots of time outdoors.
I primarily tutor students preparing for the Reading and Writing portion of the SAT, but I also have a background and experience in biology, law, technology, and creative writing. I got my bachelor's degree from Duke University and I have a JD from Boston College. I chose to focus on the SAT as I know how stressful standardized tests can be, especially as they're a factor in the high-stakes world of college admissions. Regardless of the subject, I adjust my tutoring approach to a student's individual personality and needs - just because a test may be standardized does not mean I use a "one-size-fits-all" approach to helping students! Outside of academia, I enjoy travel (I've been to 34 states and seven countries), fitness, cooking, gaming, EDM, and watching sports.
Hello! My name is Katrina. I am 24 years old and currently living in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. I graduated from Boston College in 2015 with a degree in Psychology and went on to work for a recruitment firm in downtown Boston for almost 2 years. I left my position to explore opportunities working with children in an academic setting and to begin a graduate program in the fall of 2017. I want to share my passion for learning with children, as I did when I was a volunteer tutor for high school students during my college years. I have experience tutoring students in reading, writing, mathematics (up to Algebra 1) and basic Spanish. As a former recruiter, I am also well-versed in resume writing, interviews, college application essays and public speaking. I am open to and have experience tutoring students of all ages.
Learning and teaching is never a process which can be properly dictated and planned for, it must evolve based on regular and meaningful interaction between a student and teacher. It is with this mindset that I approach every student I work with, always being cognizant of a specific student's strengths and weaknesses and working to improve every aspect of their academic journey. Moreover, I currently hold my Master's degree in Political Science and International Relations from Boston College where I wrote my thesis on the Middle East entitled, "Economic Opportunity and Inequality as Contributing Factors to the Arab Spring: The Cases of Tunisia and Egypt". Prior to this I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Communication and History with Magna Cum Laude and Dean's List First honors, also from Boston College. Beyond this I have done certificate coursework at the National University of Singapore in Game Theory, Cambridge University (UK) in ancient empires and politics, Venice International University in globalization and its effects on the modern world, international business, social sustainability, & modern US, EU, and NATO relations, and Boston University in wine studies.I truly look forward to helping with your academic pursuits and making the learning process a fruitful one.
I am currently a student at Boston College studying Neuroscience and Biology. I am also NREMT certified and Massachusetts licensed to practice as an EMT. The mission of Emergency Medical Technicians is to serve the community through saving lives and educating others; I strive to honor that mission by teaching.
Hello! I'm a student at BC. I've always loved to help others understand. When I was little I would have "class" and turn my younger siblings into my students. In elementary school, I began to receive great personal satisfaction from helping my classmates and friends with any homework they were confused about. Throughout high school I volunteered as a tutor since I enjoyed it so much and now I work as a part-time tutor and mentor to the children of newly-arrived immigrants in Boston. I have a very individualized approach to teaching, drawing on the interests, experiences, and style of learning of my students. My areas of speciality are both English and Spanish grammar, reading/writing, and fluency. I would love to help you/your child in any way I'm able!
Hi, my name is Danny, and I am a biology undergraduate at Boston College. I have enjoyed working with students and tutoring them in my free time through volunteering on the weekends and just recently throughout the academic year. I have over five years of experience working with students and youth in different settings. I spent two summers tutoring SHSAT prep with DeltaPrep, where I helped middle school students work through math and reading questions, practice test-taking strategies, and build stronger problem-solving habits. I have also tutored elementary students in English and math through Step Up Tutoring, and I have worked with younger students through NYC Chinese School. As a tutor who has worked with many students of various different ages, capabilities, strengths and subjects, I always try to be first very compassionate, patient, understanding and encouraging. Compassion goes a long way for many students, and it's my philosophy to connect with my students and to never give up on them. I know that students often do not struggle because they are not capable, but because a concept has not been explained in a way that makes sense to them yet. My goal is to create a supportive space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes as they learn. I want students to not only improve their grades or test scores, but also become more independent and confident in how they approach new problems. I'd like to set up my students for success in the future, by having the necessary foundational knowledge and skills to build the confidence to explore new methods, problems and subjects.
I recently graduated from Boston College with a music major and a chemistry minor. Here, I was a member of the Arts and Sciences Honors Program. Throughout my life, I have possessed a deep affinity for academics, and I love to learn and teach. That is a big reason as to why I am here as a tutor.I have ample experience as a tutor. I discovered my great love for tutoring my senior year of high school, when I tutored several of my peers in Calculus. I tutored throughout my undergraduate years, earning great praise as a chemistry tutor. My main approach as a tutor is to slowly ween my students off of my help. I usually begin the session with an example of myself performing a problem, and then I walk my students through the problem. Towards the end of the session, I challenge my students to act as if I'm the student and have them lead me through a problem.
I believe in education, and I believe in every student having confidence that he or she is smart and capable. My hope is for every student to follow his or her goals and ambitions. I went through the competitive New York City private school atmosphere at Friends Seminary through to Boston College, where I graduated Cum Laude as an English Major. Having played sports and music on top of academics in middle and high school, I know the pressure that young students in this city face. I understand their burden. My goal is to work with students so that they believe can succeed and be proud of themselves. I want students in New York to feel free amidst the overwhelming expectations to get into college. I will work with the student so that we both feel stimulated by a difficult subject. As a current acting student, I understand now more than ever that true learning is being able to make mistakes and learn from them. Any student that works with me will be free to make a mistake, so that he or she will learn from it.
I studied Math and Finance at Boston College and graduated in 2015. In some capacity, I've been helping students of varying abilities and ages in subjects ranging from reading to business to Math for the past 7 years! Nothing is more satisfying than seeing the pieces fall into place for a student who has previously been struggling with a topic. I firmly believe that learning can be interesting when placed into context. To get to know I'll tell you a little more about myself. Since graduating I've begun working at a software company in NYC. In my free time, I love reading, cooking, and playing music. I've recently begun taking up the guitar. Additionally, I'm always outdoors. I'm looking forward to the upcoming ski season and I just ran my first marathon.
Veteran math teacher and coach! My areas of strength include math ranging from upper elementary to the GMAT.
I graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History and a minoring in environmental studies. I then received a Masters in History from the University of Arizona. My experience working with students has consisted of teaching AP US and World History at a charter school in Tucson, BASIS Oro Valley, mentoring and leading discussions with undergraduate students at the University of Arizona, and giving tours to elementary school students at the Arizona History Museum. I am available to tutor students in history and in environmental science. My favorite subject to tutor is American History because of its relevance to issues that exist today and because of how it connects to so many other fields of study. I am passionate about helping students because I have found joy in learning about History and of the natural world and I am motivated to share this with others. My teaching philosophy and tutoring style usually involves finding what aspect of the subject matter captivates the students the most and guiding them so that they can find out the answers on their own. I love studying history because everything has a history. Learning more about people and places in the past can help with understanding almost any aspect of the present day. I am also drawn to environmental studies because it involves the understandings of people and of nature and their relationship with each other. I look forward to tutoring kids because I hope that my students will understand the multiple paths that history can show them. I hope to ascertain the best method for each student to learn. I also hope my students will be curious about humanity's relationship with the environment so as to better understand their own impacts on the world around them.
My positive experiences involving Second Language Acquisition serve as my primary reason for continuing to promote the benefits that the Spanish language poses both culturally and linguistically for students. It is my goal to combine my personal experiences with my ability to be a compassionate and enthusiastic mentor to contribute to your student's overall language acquisition experience. My specialization in Hispanic Literature provides a distinct dimension to my teaching and is used to cultivate analytical and critical thinking skills amongst my students. By fostering an atmosphere in which students feel confident and motivated to exercise newly acquired grammatical skills exclusively in the target language, I provide them the opportunity to practice their roles as global communicators and gain confidence to practice these skills in their own classrooms!
I am a current medical student at Boston University. I also received a Bachelors in Biology from Boston College as well as a Masters in Medical Sciences at BU. I am passionate about inclusion for students with developmental delays and have done clinical research in this field. I have had experience teaching students as young as 5th grade to students in high school and college. Although I have degrees in the sciences and have recent exposure to human biology courses, I am also knowledgeable in other subjects such as English grammar and Reading Comprehension.
I graduated summa cum laude from Middlebury College with a degree in International Policy, and I'm currently pursuing my law degree at Boston College Law School. I bring four years of experience teaching speech and debate to middle schoolers, and I now specialize in helping students navigate the college application process and strengthen their skills in the English language; from crafting personalized grammar lessons to helping students position themselves for admission at competitive schools.
I am a graduate of Gordon College, where I majored in French, and also of Boston College from which I received my Master's in French Language and Literature. I tutored Elementary and Intermediate French for a year while I was a student at a community college, and also was the TA to my French professor at Gordon, which means I corrected homework. In addition, I had the opportunity to tutor a French man in English while I studied abroad for a semester in Southern France, and he provided me with similar tutoring in French. During the summer before I began my graduate studies, I tutored a student in French as she was preparing to study at the Sorbonne the next academic year. During my two years at Boston College, I taught Elementary French to undergraduate students, and enjoyed it immensely! I am currently teaching Elementary French at another college in Boston, and working on PhD applications (in French, of course!) for next year. I absolutely love teaching- I have a great passion for the French language, culture and history, and am so excited when I get the opportunity to share this with students. As far as teaching, I try to use many techniques including choral repetition, PowerPoint, worksheets, group/partner activities, games (BINGO and Jeopardy especially!), youtube (to share francophone videos/songs), and good ol' fashioned writing on the blackboard. I require constant participation from students, speak in French most of the time, and make sure a concept is grasped before moving on to the next one. I love teaching a class, and also appreciate one-on-one time with students, where one can move more slowly and study more in-depth. As far as interests go, I love classic movies, music, cats, reading and travel.
As a current Mathematics and Computer Science student at Boston College, I am passionate about helping students grasp complex concepts in subjects like Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics. With over 2 years of tutoring experience, I focus on creating a supportive learning environment that encourages students to ask questions and explore their understanding. My approach is rooted in patience and adaptability, tailoring my methods to meet each student's unique needs. I find great joy in witnessing their progress and confidence grow, which motivates me to continue my tutoring journey. Outside of academics, I enjoy solving puzzles and exploring new technologies, which further enriches my teaching style.
I am an actor, artist, and teacher, with my Bachelor’s degree from Boston College, and my Master's of Fine Arts from Brown University. At Boston College, my two majors were in Theatre Arts and Theology, and at Brown, I was a part of a three year conservatory in Acting and Theatre Arts.Over the past few years I have tutored students of all ages, from the middle school level all the way to college undergraduates and even middle-aged professionals. With every student, however, I start with one simple premise: how can we be ourselves as we seek to improve in our subjects? Perhaps my favorite subjects to teach are critical writing and essay coaching, and it is crucial in these areas that we stay true to ourselves, stand behind our opinions, and use language as a powerful and persuasive tool. My job as a tutor is not to tell my students what to think, but to give them the rhetorical tools to express their opinions clearly and concisely. The same premise applies to my reading comprehension and literature tutoring. I want my students to get closer to the writer, to see how they are similar, to understand more about themselves as they work to understand the material. Of course, students should enjoy themselves in all of their academic endeavors, and I like to have fun in my tutoring sessions. As an actor I usually play the role of the fool, so when I’m teaching I like to keep the energy light and fast, while still maintaining a rigorous learning environment. When I’m not teaching or acting I like to spend as much time as possible outdoors biking, hiking, fishing, swimming - you name it, I love being outside. I also really enjoy traveling and adventuring. I've been all over the world. I've lived in Scotland, London, and Sweden, and I've visited Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, Ireland, and Canada. My spirit for adventure also makes me a great geography tutor, and I like to ignite that passion for learning and travel in my students.
I am currently a junior at Boston College, majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Marketing. I have a Master's degree in Hispanic Studies from Boston College and have taught Spanish in the classroom and 1 on 1. My goal is to help students succeed in Spanish by developing their critical thinking skills, providing study techniques that are specific to second language acquisition, and offering a different teaching style than the students' current teacher in order to optimize learning.
I graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 2011 where I received a Bachelor of Arts in French Studies with minors in English and Linguistics. I began my tutoring career during my time as an undergraduate student and worked at my university's Academic Enhancement Center where I tutored in French, English, Philosophy, and Sociology. After graduating, I spent time as an English teaching assistant in France. After returning to the US, I began working at the Alliance Franaise where I taught French for three years to adults and youth at various levels. I also spent time working in a French immersion school with children of many different ages. For the past two years I taught French to undergraduate students at Boston College where I was also working toward a Master's Degree in French Literature. Having obtained the Master's, I am now beginning a PhD at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. I am very passionate about French and about communicating my love for it to others in a way that would be contagious. This is certainly the area in which I have the most experience and the deepest affection, but I also enjoy tutoring in a wide variety of subjects. I have a particular love for literature, whether in French or English, and have a strong desire to see an increase in the number of students who find themselves enamored of it in the same way as I do. If I can help to produce that in some way, I will be satisfied. I think that education and rigorous, critical, analytical thinking are of the utmost importance in our day and age. I desire to encourage these things. In my spare time, I enjoy reading books on all kinds of subjects, playing and listening to music, and spending time with people from other cultures/countries.
To teach is to inspire other to pursue the highest they are capable of. Through education I have changed from a child to an inspired adult. It is my aim in this world to inspire others to become achieving individuals with the knowledge as their tool to reach their highest aspirations.
I've always had a huge passion for theatre, but even some of my friends don't know that I also love math, art history, and writing! I earned my BA at Boston College and my MFA at The Boston Conservatory. My masters program was a dual performance and teaching degree which provided a pedagogical point of view and the opportunity to be a teaching assistant. I tutor several math subjects, including geometry, algebra I and II, and SAT math. Math has always been one of my favorite subjects to study and tutor because I enjoy the satisfaction of tackling a challenging puzzle. I would say that as a teacher, I like to guide my students and let them draw their own conclusions whenever possible. I want a student to leave a tutoring session feeling like they can rely on their own instincts and abilities when working on their own. My hobbies include swimming, theatre, singing, kayaking, reading, drawing, walking dogs, and watching too much Netflix. I know what it's like to struggle in school, but I also know the power of finding an appreciation for even the most dreaded subjects. I'd love to help your child articulate their goals, identify the strengths they already possess, and conquer those academic obstacles they're facing.
Hi! My name is Elizabeth and I look forward to working with you. I've been tutoring for around 3 years now at all levels ranging from elementary school to AP courses. I am dedicated to helping in any way I can and will adjust to best accommodate my students.

Boston College tutors excel across a wide range of subjects, including core academic areas like math, sciences, English, history, and foreign languages. Many also specialize in test preparation for the SAT, ACT, and AP exams—areas where BC's strong pre-college preparation translates well to helping current students. Because BC has particularly strong programs in business, philosophy, and the sciences, you'll find tutors with deep expertise in these areas. When you connect with a tutor, you can discuss which specific subjects align with your needs and their background.
Yes. Tutors who attended Boston College have firsthand knowledge of what competitive college applications look like and can help you strengthen your academic foundation, prepare for standardized tests, and develop strong study habits before applying. While they can't speak to current admission decisions, their own BC admission experience and understanding of what makes applicants competitive can provide valuable perspective. They're particularly helpful for SAT and ACT prep, where strong tutoring can significantly impact scores—the national average SAT score is around 1050, while competitive schools like BC typically see admitted students well above this mark.
Boston College graduates have navigated BC's demanding academic environment and can share strategies that actually work—from time management techniques to approaches for handling heavy reading loads and rigorous exams.
