With almost 30 years of experience in the college admissions and aid process, including a decade in the dean of admissions and aid role at a national liberal arts college, I enjoy helping students understand the admissions process and craft the best essays and applications possible. Having worked at both flagship public research universities and private national liberal arts college across the United States, I understand how the application materials are used and use a positive approach to help students present themselves to the college in the strongest way they can. I believe strongly that there is not such thing as a dumb question and the most important thing in the college selection process is fit between the student and the college.

I'm excited to join Varsity Tutors as a contract tutor focused on literacy, learning support, and special education intervention for learners ranging from age 4 through adulthood. I help students build confidence as readers and writers, especially those who have experienced ongoing difficulty with foundational literacy skills. For many years, I've worked with diverse learners and their families in a collaborative intervention model, supporting growth in reading, writing, and comprehension through individualized, responsive instruction. I partner with families to clarify learning goals, instructional approaches, and progress so that literacy development feels transparent and actionable. I support early and struggling readers by building foundational skills such as phonemic awareness, letter-sound relationships, and decoding through multi-sensory instruction. For more advanced readers, I strengthen fluency, comprehension, and written expression through structured, step-by-step skill development that promotes independence. My approach is informed by my work with Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, where I learned and taught two of the most valuable evidence-based programs for literacy development: Seeing Stars and Visualizing & Verbalizing. These programs strengthened my understanding of how phoneme awareness, symbol imagery, and concept imagery work together to support accurate decoding and deep comprehension. I have consistently seen meaningful progress across a wide range of learners, from non-readers with strong listening comprehension to fluent readers with significant comprehension challenges. I provide clear, explicit instruction in reading fluency, language comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and verbal expression, carefully adjusting support to ensure measurable growth. Above all, I create a structured, encouraging learning environment where students feel safe to take risks, engage deeply, and grow with confidence. Although I have master's degrees in voice and also teach violin and beginner guitar, music is not my only language. I can help you with writing, editing, public speaking, or remembering material for a test. I have taught English language arts for three years and specialize in grammar and writing. I can tutor any elementary subject and most middle school subjects. In my third year of college I learned study, comprehension, and memorizing skills that I wished I had been taught in first grade! I recently graduated Birmingham Southern College with a B.A. in Religion and minor in Sociology. I am now working as a youth pastor for a Methodist church. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Religion, and Sociology. I've worked with a variety of ages, but I'm partial to middle schoolers and those working towards taking CLEP tests. I have taken and passed three CLEP tests myself, so I understand how the process works and what it takes to master the material. I also enjoy helping students in their college application process. When I'm not tutoring or teaching, I enjoy volunteering, my cats, and writing.

I am a graduate of Birmingham Southern College. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies with a minor in art history. Since graduation, I have traveled to the Bahamas. I have also started tutoring students in math and art history. While I tutor different subjects, I am most passionate about Elementary math and art history. I am currently pursuing my master's degree in architecture, so I can eventually go and get my license. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, playing video games, watching my family play baseball/softball, and spending time with my family.

I've recently moved to the Atlanta area after living abroad in Chile for 8 years. I am originally from Alabama and graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a BA in English Language and Literature. Immediately after undergrad, I relocated to New York City to pursue my law degree at Fordham University. After earning my Juris Doctor and passing the NY bar exam, I worked for five years as a litigator in New York. In 2009, I took the opportunity to fulfill a lifetime dream to live abroad and moved to South America. Upon arriving in Chile, I worked as an ESL teacher for children and adults as well as an editor of investment research and corporate trainer. I love language and am passionate about helping others learn to speak, write and read in a more effective way. Language is a tool, and I truly believe anyone can learn to use it better. I'm excited to be back in the US and eager to work with motivated students.

I attended Birmingham-Southern College for my undergraduate studies, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. After working for two years, I attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, earning a Ph.D in Genes and Development. My studies there were focused on Immunology, Cancer and Genetics. Since graduation, I have worked in the biotech industry, lectured in Microbiology and am currently doing research on vaccine development.I enjoy one on one teaching, and just discussing science in general. It's always a thrill when the light goes on for someone. I am a follower of all fields of science and technology, and try to incorporate new ideas into my work at all times. In my spare time, I build computers, read history and science fiction and go to movies with my wife.

I'm Alicia Willis. I graduated from Birmingham Southern College with a bachelors of science. I majored in mathematics but also took some classes in financial accounting. I am a assistant coach at North Paulding High School women's basketball team and track and field. I have six years of experience tutoring math at the K-12 level

My passion for teaching began in the middle of my high school career when I first started tutoring my peer in math. She was struggling in Pre-Calculus, and I decided to help her (obviously, not out of self-interest ). As I began my tutoring sessions, my passion for teaching began to grow since I really liked seeing my students understand and interpret difficult concepts and incorporate them as one of their own. After seeing this happen multiple times, their joy became mine, and I wanted to spread the joy of learning to other people as well. I know that learning can be difficult and hard at times, but with a friend or a mentor to guide you, it can lessen that load and make this journey more bearable and even rewarding at times. To explain a little bit about myself, I graduated from Pensacola Christian Academy and went straight into Birmingham-Southern College, which is a small liberal arts college located in the town of Birmingham, Alabama. Because of my high score on my SAT and my status as an international student, I received a full-tuition scholarship that was exclusively meant for international students, and after spending one year as a freshman, I got into a position of a Resident Advisor and basically got myself into a full-ride scholarship with no fees to worry about (scholarship paid for full tuition, my position as an RA paid for room & board, and my work-study position paid for all extra fees). After four years at BSC, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science with a physics major and a mathematics minor. I tutor all math-related subjects (arithmetic, algebra, pre-calculus, calculus, and some higher mathematics courses), but I especially enjoy teaching pre-calculus and college-level calculus since I had the most experience tutoring in those two subjects. I think my teaching philosophy is to connect with my student first, and then try to figure out what problems they are facing so that they can understand and overcome the obstacle that lies ahead. Since I know that all people think differently and in their own style, I will match my teaching style to yours, and I will do my best to work alongside you to figure out what is the best solution to solve your particular problem.
