After graduating from Auburn University with a B.S. in Language Arts Education, I traveled the world to teach English/Language Arts in Europe, Central, and North America. With five years of traditional classroom teaching under my belt, I set out to forge a new path for myself in the virtual classroom so that I could focus on engaging with young people on topics that I care deeply about: language and literature. Over the course of my career, I have worked with students from all walks of life and delight in the exchange of ideas and culture that comes from one-on-one and group discussions around common themes. My forte is helping students work-shop academic and creative writing. In my personal time I enjoy reading, watching re-runs of Parks and Rec, traveling, and taking my dog on hikes.

No toy was safe in my hands. As a child, I always took my toys apart to see their inner components and how they produced sound or light. Most survived the reassembly stage, while others were mourned by my mother's pocketbook. When I was in the fifth grade, my mother gave me my first toolkit. To say the least, I took apart everything in the house that could be disassembled with a screwdriver. Along with deconstructing anything that gained my interest, I also enjoyed crafting things.I associate these childhood curiosities with my current interests as I find myself wondering how natural phenomena occur and daydreaming about inventions. Studying the interactions between humans and technology have been in my interests for most of my high school and college career. My short-term goal is to explore different focuses so that I can develop an understanding of my personal interests in the field of physics. My long-term goal is to use my passion for sharing knowledge as an educator and to help others find what peaks their curiosities.

Although I took AP Physics in high school, I did not begin to develop an appreciation for physics until I joined the US Navy, and became a nuclear reactor operator on a submarine. Seeing how nuclear physics, thermodynamics, materials science, and other physics-rich areas of interest melded to produce a Fleet Ballistic Missile submarine was an epiphany! Given the opportunity to attend college, I graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and became a commissioned officer. Six years and three deployments later, I attended Naval Postgraduate School and received a Master's Degree in Systems Technology, with interdisciplinary studies in signal processing (EE) and underwater acoustics (Physics). After five more years of deployments (I made every deployment the US Navy has to offer), I retired. Although I tried several different post-service careers, nothing clicked until I took my wife's excellent advice and became an IB and AP Physics teacher in Virginia for six years, and then returned to Florida to teach at my former high school until I retired in 2017. From the first day I walked into a classroom, I felt like teaching was truly a calling! Physics is literally how the universe works, and helping students overcome their doubts and fears about physics is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I look forward to having an opportunity to helping students become more comfortable in their world by understanding it more completely.

During my Master's year, I worked for Auburn University's Athletic Department tutoring athletes in accounting courses. When they would have their "ah-ha!" moment and finally understand a concept, it made all the hours worth it.I took and passed all of my CPA exams within 9 months (thanks to COVID-19.) This also means I know exactly what it is like to study and take the exams with the new protocols in place. In June 2020 I began my first public accounting job in Tampa, FL.

I received my PhD in Literary Studies/English from Georgia State University. My primary concentration was Medieval Literature, and my secondary concentration was History of the English Language. I love literature, words, and writing! While earning my PhD, I spent a semester in Venice, Italy, which really broadened my perspective on all aspects of language and writing. I also taught Survey of World Literature there, as well as Academic Writing at Mercer University as an adjunct professor. My doctoral dissertation has been downloaded hundreds of times around the world, and counting! It focuses upon specific representations of fantastic beasts and monsters in Old English writings (you've perhaps heard of the redoubtable Grendel?). Over my years of teaching, I immensely enjoyed working with students to enhance THEIR enjoyment of the writing process, which many did not initially feel that they possessed. I have always taken great satisfaction from accompanying students through the various stages of the writing process until arriving at polished finished products of which they were proud to call their own. I first became interested in World Languages when I was a child. I visited horse farms with my father who was a farrier. His job exposed me to Mexican workers who took care of the horses. In this I became enthralled with peoples, cultures and languages not my own. After I grew up I received a BA in French and English from the University of Kentucky. Unexpectedly, I had to graduate and needed another language class. I decided to learn Italian. Through this 'mistake', I have tutored many people through the years!
