Some learn through connections while others just find it better to memorize.My interest in tutoring began as I have met various people from all over the world with limited English skills. As English was my second language as well, I gained different approaches to international students who were learning the language. Because some languages are very different from English, I would start learning about their language and see what approach would be best to guide them when it came to their time of building sentences.This same approach could be used in Science and many other disciplines. Therefore, I decided to use my experience and skills and use them on the subjects I am most comfortable with.With a Bachelors degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry, I feel confident in teaching subjects in the Biology undergraduate curriculum (including Anatomy, Physiology, and Genetics), as well as Chemistry subjects. Organic Chemistry and Biochemisty are my top favorite due to the different methods of learning these seemingly complicated subjects.

My teaching philosophy is hinged on three main tenets. First, the world is a fascinating place. Lady Macbeth, the Krebs cycle, derivatives, the Spanish Civil War, the best way to pass a soccer ball -- those are all opportunities for wonder. Second, young people are full of breathtaking, wonderful ideas. I can honestly say that being in a classroom full high school students kept me more intellectually engaged (and delighted) than my studies at Harvard. Finally, words have the capacity to transform us. Whether we're reading a passage by Faulkner or writing a straightforward five paragraph essay, we're participating in a subtle form of sorcery. When students realize the power of their own minds and the power of the written word, English class becomes more like candy than medicine. That said, from my eleven years of teaching high school English, I know that not all students agree with the above tenets. For those students, I work to make the material relevant, palatable, and painless.

My name is Lauren, and I am a junior Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Spanish double-major in the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State, University Park where I am a Spanish tutor, a biology and physics TA, and a grader for calculus and organic chemistry. I love working with students and helping them to understand material better! It is such a great feeling to succeed in school, and I want to help other students feel that as well. Outside of school, I love running, giving campus tours, and volunteering as a Spanish medical translator!

I am a graduate from Central Michigan University's Honors Program where I received my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a minor in Mathematics. Since graduating, I have earned my Masters in Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology from the University of Virginia where I'm continuing on to earn my PhD in the same field. Once I earn my degree, I aspire to be a lecture professor for undergraduates with a focus on biochemistry and immunology. These subjects are exciting, but I feel students lose interest due to the mathematics involved. My extensive experience with tutoring and being a teaching assistant has inspired me to make mathematics and biological sciences more accessible and inspiring. I started tutoring mathematics (algebra through calculus) in high school and continued tutoring during my undergraduate degree in mathematics, analytical chemistry, chemistry, genetics, and molecular biology.
