Throughout my time as a student, I have experienced just how frustrating learning can sometimes be when you are pushing yourself to understand material that is just not clicking. I would love it if some of the knowledge I have acquired can help another student to lessen that frustration. I am very comfortable teaching algebra 1 and 2 as well as Anatomy and Physiology and Biology. I am most comfortable tutoring in language based subjects such as English, Composition, and Reading. Math is everywhere. Yet, it can be one of the most difficult subject for many students. My goal as a teacher is to first learn which subjects and hobbies that my student enjoys. And, then show how almost every topic within math is utilized by that student. Once I motivate that student to want to learn more about the subject matter, it is a matter of time before my student masters that topic and want to learn about another topic. It is a great confidence booster and a lesson for life. The student believes that if they can conquer the most difficult subject, then can master anything in life.

I am a graduate of Cambridge University in Leadership, from the University of Illinois-Springfield in Online Teaching and Learning, and hold baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees in geology and geochemistry. Since graduation, I have traveled extensively and have presented at over two hundred conferences and international venues. I am the sole or senior author of more than ninety publications, abstracts, presentations and workshops on an international basis. I have taught students in science courses such as geology, geochemistry, earth science, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy over the past twenty-five years. I have served as an advisor for students in many areas of discipline and have led Study Abroad learning experiences for students in both Australia and Hawai'i.Teaching has been a central part of my adult life and I strive to not only teach students but provide them with life skills such as understanding diversity, equity, and inclusiveness which I stress in all the courses I teach. Education is my life's work, and I impress upon others that it is critical for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all my students.I enjoy hiking, collecting rocks, geocaching, and flying drones to produce aerial photos and videos. Hi, I'm Alex. I graduated last year from the University of Chicago with a degree in Economics (Honors) and Arabic. This year, I am a research assistant at UChicago while I apply to PhD. programs in Economics.I'm passionate about teaching Math and Economics and looking forward to working with you!Last summer, I taught microeconomics, macroeconomics, data science, and calculus as part of the 8-week UChicago Pathways in Economics program for High School students. This was such a great experience for me to work not just in front of the classroom but also one-on-one with students gaining experience in helping students get passed those sticking points that can be so frustrating.It was so exciting to watch as they began to master the material over the course of the summer and I was honored that many of my students asked me to write them letters of recommendation for their college applications.On a personal note, I love cooking, travel, learning languages, and hanging out with friends. Oh and I'm a total podcast nerd. I listen to podcasts pretty much every day and even make some in my free time when I get a chance. My favorite podcast is probably This American Life but I also love many others including All Songs Considered, Reply All, Criminal, and the Heart.

I am a current student at Guilford College pursuing a degree in Biology, and I would love to help any student find their passion in math and science! I especially enjoy teaching cellular biology and botany, as those are my academic specialties. I love working with visual learners especially to help create diagrams and charts that can take information to a new level. Having taught full classrooms for nearly three years, I’ve found that my true niche in education is through tutoring. I’ve taught advanced ESL courses to medical doctors in Turkey in addition to teaching basic and job-focused ESL courses to refugees in Egypt, Michigan, and New York. I studied Philosophy and International Studies in undergrad while also tutoring ESL, writing, philosophy and IELTS test prep. I have an innate love of learning that I am eager to share with my students. My ESL experience has taught me how to simplify complex concepts making them accessible and providing a strong foundation on which to build greater understanding. I am a calm and caring teacher who enjoys using humor in the classroom – but who is also capable of being firm when necessary. I love working with individual students to identify their strengths, areas that need of improvement, and to create an action-plan for their success. In my free time I enjoy yoga, biking, reading, and going to comedy shows.

I graduated with a B.A. in history from Columbia in 2004, with a focus in Nigeria.I specialize in learning how to write a history (or English) term paper, how to prepare for a history (or English) test, and how to read long dense history (or English) documents and understand them.My goal as a tutor is to make myself obsolete. My students will learn history facts, but they will also learn general patterns of how to write a paper, or how historical events work. Eventually my students will no longer need me.
