Hello, my name is Kristina and I have been involved in tutoring for the past 9 years. I received my undergraduate degree from Illinois Wesleyan University. There I studied both Biology and Spanish including participating in a study abroad program in Quito, Ecuador which allowed me to travel to the Amazon rainforest as well as the Galapagos Islands. I really enjoy traveling and also backpacked in Europe for 5 months after I graduated experiencing the rich history and meeting amazing and diverse people. I then moved out to the west coast to pursue my love of Marine Biology and earned a Master's degree in Marine Science from the University of Oregon. While in graduate school as well as studying oysters, the focus of my thesis research, I was also teaching hands-on Marine Science in a local elementary school.I then moved south to San Francisco where I had been working for three years working in informal science education. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon and graduated with departmental honors in 2009 with a bachelor of science in geological sciences. I completed an honors thesis on post-glacial fluvial incision in the central southern Alps of New Zealand, which incorporated field work conducted during my study abroad experience. Shortly after graduating I was hired as a geologist by a company trying to develop low temperature geothermal resources in Texas, but the company was unable to secure funding so I started working at the Bureau of Economic Geology in Austin, Texas. In the winter of 2012 I was accepted at the Colorado School of Mines and began working towards my Masters degree in June of 2012, which focused on characterizing the water chemistry variability in 20 perennial tributaries to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. I graduate with a MS in May of 2014, and have since transitioned back to Oregon. I have a strong background in earth sciences, chemistry, math, and physics and would love to have the opportunity to assist students in these areas. I am passionate about applied science and believe that it is extremely beneficial for young students to learn this material with context, because without any context these subjects can seem like a waste of time and not worth the effort to learn. I enjoy physical activity, mostly through hiking, running, or playing soccer. I have gone on several long backpacking treks along the Pacific Crest Trail in the Sierras and around South Lake Tahoe. My biggest hiking trip was 180 miles along the John Muir Trail from Yosemite National Park to Bishop Pass over 10 days. I have two dogs, a beautiful wife, and a new baby girl.

I graduated from the University of Oregon and received a B.S. in Chemistry with departmental honors (2013-2016). My favorite subjects to teach include general chemistry and organic chemistry. I enjoy teaching because most times the subject is underappreciated. Teaching allows me to be the spokesperson for subjects and I can improve the relationship students have with difficult subjects. Recently, I have been a teaching assistant for chemistry labs and begung to shape my teaching style. The way I engage students is by having students bring questions to me, so we can discuss the problem. I typically prefer to have discussions over lectures because it is more engaging for students to have conversations about the material than listen to me talk about the subject. When students bring me questions, I normally will break the question into smaller chunks to help the student identify the hardest part of the problem. Once the problem is identified we would discuss this problem to make sure the issue is resolved. This method helps maximize the usefulness of the sessions by making the student aware of their weak points, so they can improve outside of the tutorting sessions. Outside of academia I indulge in the outdoors by running, swimming, snorkeling, hiking, and snowboarding.

During my first year in Portland I was part of a tutoring company in which I tutored several students. Needless to say, math is my passion. As a student who has taken loads of math classes, I have watched my friends struggle through not only the subject but the teaching methods. My experiences as a tutor have allowed me to branch out and use a variety of teaching techniques in order to fit each student's needs. It enabled me to create fun ideas on how to teach math in hopes that my students will not only understand but like the subject.I am a firm believer at creating a trusting relationship with my students. I work with students to create a safe and trusting environments, ones in which students are not afraid to ask questions and raise challenges. I believe that building confidence and self esteem is large factor in the success rates of students. As a tutor, it is my belief that my job is not only to teach the subject matter but to create confident, successful students.Of course I like other activities besides studying math. I ran cross country for two years in high school and have played softball for 15 years. I love photography--landscapes are my specialty. Along with spending time with my family, friends, and dogs I love to scrapbook to capture all the memories.

I've been teaching Mathematics at the community college level for over 30 years, and am currently teaching at one. I've taught the following classes between 5 and 20 times each: elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, college algebra, pre-calculus, calculus I, calculus II, and statistics. I enjoy the lecture part of teaching but, really, the best part of the job is working with my students one-on-one, getting to know them and really addressing what each needs to succeed in their studies. I'd love to work with you.I have a Bachelor's in Mathematics/Music from the University of Oregon and a master's in Mathematics from Oregon State University. I also have additional work towards a second master's, in Statistics, from Portland State University. In my spare time, I play soccer, play the trombone, and work on my programming skills.

I have extensive experience tutoring adults in English fluency and literature through the American English Institute for foreign language learners, as well as tutoring peers in Mandarin Chinese, as I have studied abroad in China and am familiar with Chinese and English education programs. I also worked for the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry teaching adults and minors science literacy, basic physics, biology, and chemistry. I majored in biomedical anthropology with a focus in transgender health, and I believe education is a right.

I've been tutoring since I was a high school student myself. I tutor because I find it immensely rewarding to play a role in turning a person's frustration in a topic into a success story. I, myself, have needed tutoring in topics throughout my education and I feel that helping others come to understand the subjects in which I am well-versed is paying a form of good will forward. I have a M.Ed in Education from the University of Oregon and over a decade of hands-on teaching experience in classroom settings.
