I am dedicated, then, to meeting students where they are at in their writing. I have found that my strengths lie in listening to students, hearing what they struggle with, and then dedicating the time and patience to helping them improve their work. My goal as an instructor and tutor is to not only equip students with the skills they need to improve their writing and English but also to help them see that they do have something valuable to say and that they can make improvements. I have learned through my experiences that I am passionate about working with students because I greatly enjoy helping them gain confidence to become better writers, communicators, and learners.

I am also passionate about learning and I enjoy inspiring that passion in others. I appreciate the experience of working with students in one-on-one tutoring sessions so I can gain a better understanding of each student's learning style and to build a great relationship so I can make each tutoring session more fun as well as productive.
I am an experienced and well-qualified essay coach, and a tutor in language arts and German. I also tutor students who are preparing for the SAT. I earned my B.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in German from UC Berkeley, where I taught college German and received training in foreign language pedagogy. I love to learn, I am drawn to travel, and the experiences I have had enrich my work as a tutor. For me, tutoring is about more than making the grade or getting the right score; I always strive to foster insights and new skills that will help my students take charge of their own education.
I'm in a good position to talk about how certain concepts are used in the real world. I'm also a huge bookworm and offer SAT Critical Reading prep as well as general tutoring for writing. My hobby is creative writing and I'm currently writing up parts of my dissertation for publication, so I can help with writing from literary analysis to history research papers to the writing aspect of lab reports. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm playing the hammered dulcimer and teaching myself to code in new languages.
I am particularly interested in helping people strengthen their writing skills. Whether you're working on your first high school essay or whether you're refining your undergraduate honors thesis, I can help!
I am known among friends for my love of puzzles, riddles, word problems, and mathematical challenges. I have a deep knowledge of pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus and a passion for teaching it. I also enjoy tutoring Spanish. While foundational vocab and grammar are important, I emphasize speaking and encourage my students to take risks. I believe embracing discomfort is critical to learning a language. Spanish has helped me to travel and live in different communities throughout the world. I strive to kindle a similar appreciation and passion for language in my students.
I'm currently majoring in bioengineering/pre-med at Rice University. I graduated as the valedictorian of my high school class. My interests include biology, math, and violin performance. I've done neuroscience research at the Jungers Center for Neuroscience Reseach and the Oregon National Primate Research Center. I've also done molecular biology research at the Oregon Stem Cell Center.
I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I've always loved Math and the Sciences: the hunt for the right equation to use, the unravelling of the mystery of the value of x. I want to show my students to see these subjects as I do: as a challenge, not a chore. I try to do this by making things simple and showing straightforward techniques that students can use on their own to sidestep mental walls, thus building confidence. I love to see them succeed academically and value the opportunity to be a part of that success.
I'm Owen! I was born and raised in Portland, OR, but I currently live in Rhode Island, where I'm working towards a Bachelor's Degree at Brown University. If there's one thing to know about me, it's that I love to learn, no matter the subject. Learning is a life-long process that can take you anywhere in life. But this doesn't mean it's always easy. It would be my privilege to help you overcome the obstacles you encounter on this journey.
I am particularly passionate about language arts and I hope to help learners realize the beauty, complexity and joy of reading and writing well. I believe that education is transformative and necessary--and that one's education is a lifelong journey. In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, yoga and exploring Portland's many offerings.
I'm a strong believer that education can be fun, and address learning with a sense of humor and a positive attitude. My approach to learning tends to be very communication-based, and often driven by how the client I'm working with feels they learn best. As a result, I tend to provide structure and guidance in a more flexible learning environment.
I am not teaching, I write fiction (my debut book, From the Caves, won several national awards) and my shorter works have appeared in Poets & Writers, Longreads, The Kenyon Review, CRAFT Literary Magazine, New Orleans Review, and elsewhere. Learn more at theaprieto.com.

Frequently Asked Questions
Varsity Tutors connects students across Corvallis's 17 schools, serving the full range of learners in the community. Whether your student attends an elementary, middle, or high school in the area, we can match them with a tutor who understands local curriculum standards and can provide personalized support aligned with what they're learning in class.
While Corvallis schools maintain a reasonable student-teacher ratio, individual students still benefit greatly from dedicated 1-on-1 attention. Personalized tutoring allows tutors to focus entirely on your student's specific learning gaps, pace, and learning style—something that's difficult in even the most well-staffed classroom. This targeted approach accelerates progress and builds confidence in ways whole-class instruction can't match.
Tutors who work with Corvallis students understand Oregon's academic standards and how they're implemented locally. Whether your student needs support with Oregon's literacy benchmarks, math proficiency standards, or science and social studies expectations, personalized tutoring helps fill gaps and ensures they're on track to meet state requirements and succeed on local assessments.
The first session is a get-to-know-you meeting where the tutor assesses your student's current level, discusses specific challenges or goals, and learns about their learning style. The tutor will also ask about what's happening in their classes and what support would be most helpful. This foundation allows the tutor to create a personalized plan for the following sessions.
Students in Corvallis seek tutoring across a wide range of subjects, including math (algebra, geometry, and calculus), English and writing, science (biology, chemistry, physics), and test preparation for the SAT and ACT. We also support students in foreign languages, social studies, and AP courses. The specific needs vary by student, which is why personalized matching is so important.
Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions—there's flexibility to match different budgets and needs. We recommend starting with a consultation to discuss your student's goals and get a clear estimate. Many families find that investing in tutoring early prevents larger academic gaps down the road.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who have strong subject knowledge, teaching experience, and a track record of helping students succeed. Each tutor is carefully selected and vetted. We match your student with someone whose expertise and teaching style align with their specific needs and learning goals.
Getting started is simple—reach out to tell us about your student's needs, goals, and preferred schedule. We'll match them with an expert tutor who's a great fit, and you can schedule your first session.
