I have been fortunate to teach at the middle, high school, and college level, and I truly enjoy helping students across all these age groups achieve their goals. I am currently a PhD candidate in Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have served as the instructor for the writing-intensive sections of Intro to American Government course and as the T.A. for Survey Research Methods. Prior to coming to Madison, I earned a Masters degree in Education at the University of Florida and then taught for six years at a college preparatory school. Hey y'all! My name is Claire, and I am so excited to teach online this year. For the last seven years, I taught all over the country (Charleston, SC, Nashville, TN, Portland, OR, and Vancouver, WA) and also earned a master's degree in education from Johns Hopkins University along the way.I hated math as a kid because my teachers always made me feel stupid in class for not understanding right away. I became a math teacher because I saw how many people get stuck in their education and careers when they run into trouble in math class. Working with me, you will understand how capable you are and will never have to feel embarrassed for learning. Come to class to ask questions and learn with me!

I am an energetic, effective, and experienced teacher. After completing my B.A. in English with Philosophy Minor from UC Berkeley, I lived in Rome, Italy for two years where I taught English as a Second Language. During this time, I discovered that I had a passion and a gift for teaching.I completed my PhD in Comparative Literature with an emphasis on Latin American Studies from UC Los Angeles in 2009. While at UCLA I taught courses in Comparative Literature (Great Books), Writing Composition, and Spanish. From 2010-2014, I was Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish at Whitman College. I am currently Visiting Assistant Professor of Humanities at Lewis and Clark College where I teach courses in the Core curriculum and Spanish. My objective is to connect with students and stimulate intellectual curiosity, which I believe is the key to learning.

My favorite thing about teaching is getting to know my students and finding out what they love. By finding out what a student is passionate about, I can help connect that to their learning goals. This way, they are engaged in learning and feel that it's actually relevant to their lives.I first became interested in teaching during my initial years at NYU, where I developed my own course of study on Child and Adolescent Literacy. I studied how reading develops in a child's brain and how reading is taught in schools. I also focused on how diversity in children's literature impacts identity development. I went on to study Education at UCLA in their Teacher Education Program, where I earned my MEd and California Preliminary Teaching Credential. Throughout my college years, I gained experience working with Pre-K, TK, K, 1st, 2nd, and 4th-grade classes. Once I obtained my credential and graduated, I gained more experience working at a bilingual (Spanish) school teaching 1st-grade, and later at art and social justice-based school teaching 6th grade.I've been an assistant and student teacher in Pre-K, TK, K, 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade. I've been the lead teacher in 1st grade and 6th-grade classrooms. I've taught all subjects in both English and Spanish at the elementary level.Outside of tutoring, I love watching TV and movies. I probably spend at least 1-2 hours a day checking out new content. My favorite shows right now are probably Westworld, Money Heist, and Elite. I also love reading books, mostly fiction and YA. If I'm outside, I like to skateboard and try to land new tricks, either on my street or at the skate park.

I received a BA at Brown University and I'm currently pursuing an MS in Statistics at Portland State University. Between Brown and Portland State, I have traveled to most countries in Europe as well as many countries in Asia. I have been tutoring Math and Statistics at PCC since 2013, and I enjoy working with students from all different backgrounds. I particularly love Statistics because it is used in so many ways in the modern world! In my spare time, I love being outdoors and practicing meditation.
