I am an experienced and well-qualified essay coach, and a tutor in language arts and German. I also tutor students who are preparing for the SAT. I earned my B.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in German from UC Berkeley, where I taught college German and received training in foreign language pedagogy. I love to learn, I am drawn to travel, and the experiences I have had enrich my work as a tutor. For me, tutoring is about more than making the grade or getting the right score; I always strive to foster insights and new skills that will help my students take charge of their own education.

I'm in a good position to talk about how certain concepts are used in the real world. I'm also a huge bookworm and offer SAT Critical Reading prep as well as general tutoring for writing. My hobby is creative writing and I'm currently writing up parts of my dissertation for publication, so I can help with writing from literary analysis to history research papers to the writing aspect of lab reports. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm playing the hammered dulcimer and teaching myself to code in new languages.
I am particularly interested in helping people strengthen their writing skills. Whether you're working on your first high school essay or whether you're refining your undergraduate honors thesis, I can help!
I am known among friends for my love of puzzles, riddles, word problems, and mathematical challenges. I have a deep knowledge of pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus and a passion for teaching it. I also enjoy tutoring Spanish. While foundational vocab and grammar are important, I emphasize speaking and encourage my students to take risks. I believe embracing discomfort is critical to learning a language. Spanish has helped me to travel and live in different communities throughout the world. I strive to kindle a similar appreciation and passion for language in my students.
I'm currently majoring in bioengineering/pre-med at Rice University. I graduated as the valedictorian of my high school class. My interests include biology, math, and violin performance. I've done neuroscience research at the Jungers Center for Neuroscience Reseach and the Oregon National Primate Research Center. I've also done molecular biology research at the Oregon Stem Cell Center.
I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I've always loved Math and the Sciences: the hunt for the right equation to use, the unravelling of the mystery of the value of x. I want to show my students to see these subjects as I do: as a challenge, not a chore. I try to do this by making things simple and showing straightforward techniques that students can use on their own to sidestep mental walls, thus building confidence. I love to see them succeed academically and value the opportunity to be a part of that success.
I'm Owen! I was born and raised in Portland, OR, but I currently live in Rhode Island, where I'm working towards a Bachelor's Degree at Brown University. If there's one thing to know about me, it's that I love to learn, no matter the subject. Learning is a life-long process that can take you anywhere in life. But this doesn't mean it's always easy. It would be my privilege to help you overcome the obstacles you encounter on this journey.
I am particularly passionate about language arts and I hope to help learners realize the beauty, complexity and joy of reading and writing well. I believe that education is transformative and necessary--and that one's education is a lifelong journey. In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, yoga and exploring Portland's many offerings.
I'm a strong believer that education can be fun, and address learning with a sense of humor and a positive attitude. My approach to learning tends to be very communication-based, and often driven by how the client I'm working with feels they learn best. As a result, I tend to provide structure and guidance in a more flexible learning environment.
I am not teaching, I write fiction (my debut book, From the Caves, won several national awards) and my shorter works have appeared in Poets & Writers, Longreads, The Kenyon Review, CRAFT Literary Magazine, New Orleans Review, and elsewhere. Learn more at theaprieto.com.
I am a graduate of The University of Portland, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, I worked for Nike as a Test and Validation Engineer on their Digital Sport products (FuelBand, SportWatch, Nike+, etc.) for one year before returning to graduate school. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, with a focus in design and manufacturing, and will graduate in the summer of 2015.
I am currently a senior attending the University of Notre Dame, and I am pursuing a degree in the Program of Liberal Studies (PLS). PLS is a renowned Great Books program that aims to perfect the student's ability to think critically in a variety of disciplines, such as literature, philosophy, and history. In PLS, great emphasis is placed on formulating deep and effective arguments and presenting them clearly in a technically correct manner, both in class and through my written work. Consequently, I have had much practice writing and editing my own work as well as editing that of my classmates. I am also pursuing a minor in education and am seriously considering pursuing a career in the educational field after graduating. I am passionate about helping others learn to the fullest extent of their abilities while enjoying the subject at the same time!

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Medford's 30 schools and both school districts with personalized 1-on-1 instruction. Whether your student attends a school in the Medford School District or Phoenix-Talent School District, we match them with tutors who understand local curriculum standards and can support their specific academic needs.
Medford students typically seek help with math, English/language arts, and test preparation for standardized assessments like the SAT and ACT. We also work with students on Oregon-specific requirements like meeting state standards in science and social studies. Tutors can address gaps from any grade level and help students prepare for transitions between elementary, middle, and high school.
With an average student-teacher ratio of 18.7:1 in Medford classrooms, many students benefit from one-on-one attention that allows tutors to focus entirely on their learning style and pace. Personalized instruction fills gaps that larger classroom settings can't address, helping students build confidence and master concepts before moving forward.
Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who are familiar with Oregon's academic standards and can help students master grade-level expectations in core subjects. Whether your student needs support with reading proficiency, math benchmarks, or science standards, tutors tailor instruction to align with what Medford schools expect.
During the first session, the tutor and student get to know each other and the tutor assesses the student's current level, learning style, and specific challenges. This helps establish a personalized plan focused on the student's goals—whether that's improving grades, preparing for a test, or building foundational skills. The tutor will also explain how they'll track progress and communicate with parents.
Frequency depends on the student's needs and goals. Some students benefit from weekly sessions for ongoing support, while others meet twice a week during test prep or when tackling a challenging subject. Varsity Tutors works with you to find a schedule that fits your family's needs and maximizes learning—tutors can adjust frequency as the student progresses.
Tutoring rates vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and your student's needs. Varsity Tutors offers flexible pricing options and can work with your budget. We recommend starting with a consultation to discuss your student's specific situation—this helps us match the right tutor and give you an accurate estimate for your family.
Many students show noticeable progress within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, though the timeline depends on the student's starting point and goals. For test preparation, students often see score improvements after 8-12 weeks of focused study. Tutors track progress regularly and adjust their approach to keep students moving forward.
