I am an Occupational Therapist with a background and interests in psychology, english, and math. I studied Psychology and Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia and have a Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy from Tufts University.

I am an experienced and well-qualified essay coach, and a tutor in language arts and German. I also tutor students who are preparing for the SAT. I earned my B.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in German from UC Berkeley, where I taught college German and received training in foreign language pedagogy. I love to learn, I am drawn to travel, and the experiences I have had enrich my work as a tutor. For me, tutoring is about more than making the grade or getting the right score; I always strive to foster insights and new skills that will help my students take charge of their own education.
I'm in a good position to talk about how certain concepts are used in the real world. I'm also a huge bookworm and offer SAT Critical Reading prep as well as general tutoring for writing. My hobby is creative writing and I'm currently writing up parts of my dissertation for publication, so I can help with writing from literary analysis to history research papers to the writing aspect of lab reports. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm playing the hammered dulcimer and teaching myself to code in new languages.
I am particularly interested in helping people strengthen their writing skills. Whether you're working on your first high school essay or whether you're refining your undergraduate honors thesis, I can help!
I am known among friends for my love of puzzles, riddles, word problems, and mathematical challenges. I have a deep knowledge of pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus and a passion for teaching it. I also enjoy tutoring Spanish. While foundational vocab and grammar are important, I emphasize speaking and encourage my students to take risks. I believe embracing discomfort is critical to learning a language. Spanish has helped me to travel and live in different communities throughout the world. I strive to kindle a similar appreciation and passion for language in my students.
I'm currently majoring in bioengineering/pre-med at Rice University. I graduated as the valedictorian of my high school class. My interests include biology, math, and violin performance. I've done neuroscience research at the Jungers Center for Neuroscience Reseach and the Oregon National Primate Research Center. I've also done molecular biology research at the Oregon Stem Cell Center.
I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I've always loved Math and the Sciences: the hunt for the right equation to use, the unravelling of the mystery of the value of x. I want to show my students to see these subjects as I do: as a challenge, not a chore. I try to do this by making things simple and showing straightforward techniques that students can use on their own to sidestep mental walls, thus building confidence. I love to see them succeed academically and value the opportunity to be a part of that success.
I'm Owen! I was born and raised in Portland, OR, but I currently live in Rhode Island, where I'm working towards a Bachelor's Degree at Brown University. If there's one thing to know about me, it's that I love to learn, no matter the subject. Learning is a life-long process that can take you anywhere in life. But this doesn't mean it's always easy. It would be my privilege to help you overcome the obstacles you encounter on this journey.
I am particularly passionate about language arts and I hope to help learners realize the beauty, complexity and joy of reading and writing well. I believe that education is transformative and necessary--and that one's education is a lifelong journey. In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, yoga and exploring Portland's many offerings.
I'm a strong believer that education can be fun, and address learning with a sense of humor and a positive attitude. My approach to learning tends to be very communication-based, and often driven by how the client I'm working with feels they learn best. As a result, I tend to provide structure and guidance in a more flexible learning environment.
I am not teaching, I write fiction (my debut book, From the Caves, won several national awards) and my shorter works have appeared in Poets & Writers, Longreads, The Kenyon Review, CRAFT Literary Magazine, New Orleans Review, and elsewhere. Learn more at theaprieto.com.
I am a graduate of The University of Portland, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, I worked for Nike as a Test and Validation Engineer on their Digital Sport products (FuelBand, SportWatch, Nike+, etc.) for one year before returning to graduate school. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, with a focus in design and manufacturing, and will graduate in the summer of 2015.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students across Tigard's 14 schools with personalized 1-on-1 instruction. Whether your student attends a school in the Tigard-Tualatin School District or nearby areas, we match them with tutors who understand Oregon's academic standards and can support their specific learning goals.
Tigard students frequently seek support in math, science, and English language arts—subjects that form the foundation for Oregon's state assessments and college readiness. We also work with many students preparing for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT, as well as those needing help with AP and honors coursework. Tutors can tailor instruction to your student's specific challenges, whether that's algebra, chemistry, writing, or test strategy.
Tigard schools maintain an average student-teacher ratio of 16.6:1, which means individual students often don't get the focused attention they need to overcome specific gaps. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to adapt their teaching to your student's learning style, pace, and goals in ways that large classroom settings can't. Research shows that this type of individualized attention significantly accelerates learning, especially for students who are behind or looking to get ahead.
Tutors connected through Varsity Tutors are familiar with Oregon's learning standards and graduation requirements, helping students build the skills and knowledge needed for state assessments and college readiness. Whether your student needs to strengthen foundational skills or master advanced content, tutors can align instruction with Oregon's curriculum frameworks and help students progress confidently through their coursework.
During the first session, your tutor will assess your student's current level, discuss their learning goals, and identify areas where they need the most support. This helps the tutor create a personalized plan for future sessions. Most students feel comfortable quickly and can start working on their specific challenges right away—whether that's homework help, test prep, or building confidence in a difficult subject.
Varsity Tutors works with families to find tutoring times that fit their schedules. Whether your student needs help after school, on weekends, or during the school year or summer, tutors can accommodate different availability. This flexibility makes it easier for working parents and students with other commitments to access consistent, personalized academic support.
Results vary based on each student's starting point and goals, but most students see improvements in grades, test scores, and academic confidence within a few weeks of consistent tutoring. Some students need help catching up in a specific subject, while others are working toward advanced placement or college preparation—tutors adjust their approach to match your student's unique objectives and timeline.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have strong subject expertise and experience teaching or tutoring students. Each tutor is vetted and selected based on their ability to work effectively with students one-on-one. When you get matched with a tutor, you can discuss their background, teaching approach, and experience with students like yours to ensure it's a good fit.
