I attended Oregon State University, where I received bachelors degrees in biology and botany. I also earned my certification as a Wilderness First Responder while living in Corvallis.Since graduating, I've been working as teacher, helping elementary- and middle-school-aged children in all subjects. I've also tutored at the college level, focusing primarily on essay writing. Through all of my experiences, my favorite subjects have been early-level science and upper-level writing. I'm a strong believer that education can be fun, and address learning with a sense of humor and a positive attitude. My approach to learning tends to be very communication-based, and often driven by how the client I'm working with feels they learn best. As a result, I tend to provide structure and guidance in a more flexible learning environment. When I'm not helping to educate others, I am working on my wicked dance skills and improving my fluency in German. I'm a bit of a glutton for new information, so I spend a lot of time reading and picking up diverse skills, like archery and basic auto maintenance. I also love spending time outdoors in any capacity, especially hiking and camping; one of my long-term goals is to visit all 59 of the US's national parks!

Hello learners and parents! I am happy you are here! My name is Ria Purcell. I am a recent Bachelor's of English graduate of 2023 from Oregon State University. I have been a tutor for three years now, working with all age ranges of students: K-12 and even college level. I am really looking forward to working with students struggling with their academic studies. I rarely had any outside help with school growing up, so I strive to be that academic resource for learners that I never had but always needed. My teaching methodology is 1-1 hands on interactive learning. I believe learners thrive best in environments where they are accepted. In turn, they are able to confidently show their learning styles in a welcoming space. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any additional information you want me to know about your learner before enrollment in any of my courses, so I can be sure to better support them through their educational journey.
I am a graduate of George Washington University, Washington, DC where I received a Master of Education with a specialty in teaching English as a Second Language. I have taught English for over 30 years at the elementary level to university level, in public schools and online. My last position was as Senior Language Instructor at a university in the Middle East. There I taught grammar, reading, writing, speaking and listening to students with varying abilities. I've also taught ELA to students from grade 2 to 12. Grammar is my passion, as I believe it is the foundation of any language. If you know grammar, you can write and speak well. I like working with students one on one or in small groups so that I can devote more attention to each student. I'm also a published author of Revered and Reviled: The Complete History of the Domestic Cat.

I have always appreciated the written word - whether writing a research paper, diagramming a sentence, journaling, reading a teen novella, or analyzing Shakespeare. There is much to be learned and offered from it. Initial enjoyment turned into serious study, and I earned my Bachelor and Master degrees and became a secondary English teacher.I have had much experience in the educational arena and have worked with varying age groups, skill levels, and course work. I have instructed from the middle school level to the collegiate level. Aside from my formal teaching and tutoring, I have also had the opportunity to be a mother and teach my own children.I have a passion for both literature and writing and enjoy sharing that with others. I desire to help others enhance their learning abilities and educational experience.
I am passionate about tutoring because I love facilitating the love of academic success. School was always fun for me; unfortunately I know that is not the case for everyone and tutoring gives me the platform to share my love for learning. My experience tutoring involves mostly writing, I enjoy assisting with improving student's writing skills and proofreading papers before they are turned in to improve students' scores. I received my Bachelors of Arts from Oregon State University and my Masters of Education from Concordia University. It was during my time at Concordia as a graduate student that I discovered my love for tutoring! I currently tutor in the subjects of reading, writing, and English ACT test taking. My favorite subject to tutor is APA writing assistance; writing in the APA format can be challenging! I enjoy the challenge and especially helping students to improve their writing skills in this format. In my spare time I enjoy reading, drinking strong coffee, traveling, playing with my children, and anything outdoors here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest!
I am a Chemical Engineer. I currently work as a Sr. Operations Engineer at a chemical plant in Salisbury, NC. I'm a certified trainer with my organization. Although my career is fulfilling, I'm passionate about education and have always wanted to be a teacher.I particularly enjoy teaching math and science. Neither of these subjects came easy to me when I was younger, so I can understand the frustrations of students who struggle in these areas. However, I am living proof that anyone can learn to understand the material and even learn to love it!When tutoring a student, I am extremely patient. I understand that struggling with a subject can be frustrating and many people prefer to avoid the work all together. I have learned that relating difficult topics to something the student enjoys is an effective learning tool. I combine this technique with hands-on examples. In my experience, practice does make perfect!I tutor in many subjects, including the following:- Pre-algebra- Algebra- Pre-calculus- Calculus- Statistics- Chemistry- Mass transfer- Fluid dynamics- Heat transfer- Organic Chemistry- And more! Contact me to see if I'm a good fit for you.
Hi! I'm a recent PSU dual master's graduate, now a new tutor here looking to help you learn the tricky bits of math as well as computer science. I specialize in discrete math, as that was what I tutored while I was at PSU, but can teach pretty much all levels. Looking forward to guiding you towards that "Aha!" moment where things click in your head.
I graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. Since that time, my work and passion have been to focus on mentoring learning, from clarifying and breaking down the steps in algebra problems to revealing and instructing on the fundamentals of grammar. My educational positions include years of teaching international folk dance to middle schoolers, which involves learning geography and social studies, tutoring in middle-school and high-school classrooms, teaching English as a second language to adults, and one-on-one tutoring in Math and Language Arts. I tutor Math up through Algebra II, middle and high school English & grammar, and the core subjects of middle school. My intent, when tutoring, is to responsively connect with students, so that they can engage in understanding their subject and acquire learning tools to attack new material confidently. My favorite subjects to tutor are English, Math, and Social Studies. Studying U.S. and World History is a personal passion; delving into STEM topics, such as 3D printing, microbiology, and chemistry, is a self-educating goal. I believe education is inspiring the desire to engage in learning, then, providing lucid instruction so that the individual can pursue formal and self education for life.
The world and the universe are fascinating. I enjoy learning about all kinds of things, and I enjoy helping others learn. It's not only satisfying to help others gain interesting knowledge, but it's gratifying to help them build skills in order to do great things.

I have received an Associates in Science from Portland Community College and nearly finished with my Bachelor's in Physics from Oregon State University, which I expect to have in August. Both my college and life experience has led me to work with people of various ages in a plethora of settings, but a favorite focus has been in teaching children. I have done a lot of outreach with my physics department with K-12 kids, including designing experiments and walking kids through demonstrations, but I've also worked with children in small groups in a more casual environment.Despite the focus on children, I have also worked with peers in math and physics and enjoy employing many different methods of learning, such as 3D models, folding paper, Mathematica graphs and simulations, and physician demonstrations. My favorite subject to teach is literature, with physics and mathematics close seconds. My teaching philosophy can be summed up as follows:Learning should be fun.People learn at different rates and in different ways.Teaching and learning should be flexible and made to fit the student. It's good to take breaks and let your brain rest.My tutoring style is to be a guide and to help a student "learn how to learn", so to speak. I like to try to get the student to pull on previous knowledge and to learn fundamental concepts for learning and problem solving that can be used in many different subject areas.
