While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, and Phonics, Prek -Elementary and the special needs population. I am a 2020 graduate of Northwestern University with a BA in Cognitive Science and Linguistics. I have previously tutored at Mathnasium, and during my senior year at NU I was a tutor for student-athletes on campus. I greatly enjoy helping others learn and seeing the accomplishment on their faces when a concept we've been working on finally clicks.Some of my favorite topics to teach are psychology and standardized tests like the ACT--these are areas that I enjoyed studying when I was in high school, so I like to make them fun and interesting for my students as well.In my free time, I make time to read for pleasure, get outside to enjoy the fresh air, and recently started crocheting!

I am currently a student at Williams College. I have not yet specified my major but I plan to concentrate in English and philosophy. I have a keen interest in education and have actively sought out experience in the field for the past two years. I served as a Writing Fellow at Mount Greylock Regional School this past fall. There I was employed as an assistant for Mr. Dils, a high school English teacher. I was responsible for helping to prepare his tenth and twelfth grade classes, as well as correcting student writing. I have additional experience tutoring English at the Isoapple after-school facility, where I am currently assisting with the summer program. English is my primary subject, but I am also interested in tutoring History and SAT prep. In my own experience writing is the superlative avenue of expression, and reading the premier pathway to wisdom and perspective. I hail from the greater Chicago area, and I am a senior at DePaul University studying Computer Science and Game Development. While programming is exciting to me, one of my other passions is teaching the math and science subjects that accompany Computer Science. I learned very early on that it wasn't the material that was most essential to learning, but it is the proper learning environment that really pushes students to do their best. That is the goal of my tutoring sessions: to create an environment where it's great to ask questions, and perfectly okay to not quite get it at first.

As a former rhythmic gymnastics trainer for young girls and private tutor, I love to share my skills and knowledge in all areas of my expertise. I understand the patience that comes with explaining problems to or training a student who may have never seen the subject before or has been taught incoherently. I specifically love tutoring math and physics because I myself have witnessed teachers or professors who have unmotivated students to continue further studies in those subjects with the use of unclear and didactic teaching methods. Math and physics is not so scary! To me it was more like learning a new language. I finished my baccalaureate in physics with a math minor. I have also done very well on standardized tests, not strictly because of my analytical knowledge but mostly because of the test taking skills I have aquired. I hope to pass on these skills so students don't have to waste time retaking standardized tests and parents don't have to cover as many fees. I scored 790/800 on the math portion of the SAT on my first try! I chose a major and minor combination that focuses on international business because I grew up in Singapore and would love to eventually return back to Asia. Throughout my time living in Asia, I traveled extensively and had the opportunity to work with children in Thailand and Cambodia, and help inspire them to pursue an education. Based on my experiences abroad, I believe that education has the power to change an individual's life for the better.Throughout my time at Vanderbilt, I have worked as an ACT tutor. I have always been passionate about helping students gain confidence in standardized testing, and think it is important for students to have a mentor that has already been through the process. While test prep can be difficult, it is extremely rewarding to see students excel and reach their goal scores. I've worked with C++, but now mostly use C# and Java. My other languages include HTML5, CSS3, JS, PHP5, and Python.I'm also very proficient in mathematics, especially Algebra. In fact, before I switched my major to Computer Science, I was pursuing a Mathematics major. I feel that algebra is one of the most important math skills to develop as it is what most further math classes build off of. It's also by far the most useful field.I feel that learning should be done incrementally as trying to learn everything at once is overwhelming and ultimately unsuccessful. Smaller bites of knowledge are easier to digest, leading to a more rich understanding. Another thing paramount to building understanding is to let students have fun with the assignments! It's always better to build something that you're fond of rather than something you were forced to.Outside of tutoring, I work on my degree, build applications and work on building an interconnected system of computers. I also have a side-project game that I'm developing.I'm looking forward to working with you!
