I am a full time college professor teaching Mathematics and engineering courses.

I am an experienced and well-qualified essay coach, and a tutor in language arts and German. I also tutor students who are preparing for the SAT. I earned my B.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in German from UC Berkeley, where I taught college German and received training in foreign language pedagogy. I love to learn, I am drawn to travel, and the experiences I have had enrich my work as a tutor. For me, tutoring is about more than making the grade or getting the right score; I always strive to foster insights and new skills that will help my students take charge of their own education.
I'm in a good position to talk about how certain concepts are used in the real world. I'm also a huge bookworm and offer SAT Critical Reading prep as well as general tutoring for writing. My hobby is creative writing and I'm currently writing up parts of my dissertation for publication, so I can help with writing from literary analysis to history research papers to the writing aspect of lab reports. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm playing the hammered dulcimer and teaching myself to code in new languages.
I am particularly interested in helping people strengthen their writing skills. Whether you're working on your first high school essay or whether you're refining your undergraduate honors thesis, I can help!
I am known among friends for my love of puzzles, riddles, word problems, and mathematical challenges. I have a deep knowledge of pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus and a passion for teaching it. I also enjoy tutoring Spanish. While foundational vocab and grammar are important, I emphasize speaking and encourage my students to take risks. I believe embracing discomfort is critical to learning a language. Spanish has helped me to travel and live in different communities throughout the world. I strive to kindle a similar appreciation and passion for language in my students.
I'm currently majoring in bioengineering/pre-med at Rice University. I graduated as the valedictorian of my high school class. My interests include biology, math, and violin performance. I've done neuroscience research at the Jungers Center for Neuroscience Reseach and the Oregon National Primate Research Center. I've also done molecular biology research at the Oregon Stem Cell Center.
I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I've always loved Math and the Sciences: the hunt for the right equation to use, the unravelling of the mystery of the value of x. I want to show my students to see these subjects as I do: as a challenge, not a chore. I try to do this by making things simple and showing straightforward techniques that students can use on their own to sidestep mental walls, thus building confidence. I love to see them succeed academically and value the opportunity to be a part of that success.
I'm Owen! I was born and raised in Portland, OR, but I currently live in Rhode Island, where I'm working towards a Bachelor's Degree at Brown University. If there's one thing to know about me, it's that I love to learn, no matter the subject. Learning is a life-long process that can take you anywhere in life. But this doesn't mean it's always easy. It would be my privilege to help you overcome the obstacles you encounter on this journey.
I am particularly passionate about language arts and I hope to help learners realize the beauty, complexity and joy of reading and writing well. I believe that education is transformative and necessary--and that one's education is a lifelong journey. In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, yoga and exploring Portland's many offerings.
I'm a strong believer that education can be fun, and address learning with a sense of humor and a positive attitude. My approach to learning tends to be very communication-based, and often driven by how the client I'm working with feels they learn best. As a result, I tend to provide structure and guidance in a more flexible learning environment.
I am not teaching, I write fiction (my debut book, From the Caves, won several national awards) and my shorter works have appeared in Poets & Writers, Longreads, The Kenyon Review, CRAFT Literary Magazine, New Orleans Review, and elsewhere. Learn more at theaprieto.com.
I am a graduate of The University of Portland, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, I worked for Nike as a Test and Validation Engineer on their Digital Sport products (FuelBand, SportWatch, Nike+, etc.) for one year before returning to graduate school. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, with a focus in design and manufacturing, and will graduate in the summer of 2015.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Hillsboro has 36 schools across two school districts serving over 17,000 students, and Varsity Tutors connects students from all of them with personalized 1-on-1 instruction. Whether your student attends a school in the Hillsboro School District or Forest Grove area, we can match them with a tutor who understands local curriculum standards and can support their specific academic goals.
Tutors work with students to master Oregon's academic standards in core subjects like math, reading, science, and writing. Personalized instruction allows tutors to identify gaps in understanding and target instruction to help students meet grade-level benchmarks at their own pace—something that's harder to achieve in classrooms with an 18.1:1 student-teacher ratio.
During the initial session, your tutor will assess your student's current level, understand their learning style, and discuss specific academic challenges or goals. This foundation helps the tutor create a personalized plan tailored to your student's needs—whether that's catching up in a subject, preparing for a test, or building confidence in a new skill.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors across all major subjects including math, science, English, social studies, foreign languages, and test prep for standardized assessments. We also support specialized areas like AP courses, honors classes, and learning support for students who need extra help keeping up with grade-level work.
Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions. We work with families to create flexible tutoring plans that fit different budgets—whether that's weekly sessions for ongoing support or intensive help before a major test or assignment. Contact us for a personalized quote based on your student's specific needs.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who have strong subject knowledge and experience working with students. All tutors go through a vetting process to ensure they're qualified to teach their subjects and can adapt their instruction to meet individual student needs—whether your student needs foundational support or advanced challenge.
Absolutely. One-on-one personalized instruction is especially effective for students who are struggling, since tutors can slow down, reteach concepts, and build confidence without the pressure of a large classroom. Many Hillsboro students benefit from tutoring to close gaps, catch up to grade-level standards, and regain confidence in their abilities.
Getting started is simple—reach out to Varsity Tutors and tell us about your student's academic needs and goals. We'll match them with a qualified tutor, schedule a first session, and begin building a personalized plan. Most families see their students engaged and making progress within the first few weeks of consistent tutoring.
