I am an experienced and well-qualified essay coach, and a tutor in language arts and German. I also tutor students who are preparing for the SAT. I earned my B.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in German from UC Berkeley, where I taught college German and received training in foreign language pedagogy. I love to learn, I am drawn to travel, and the experiences I have had enrich my work as a tutor. For me, tutoring is about more than making the grade or getting the right score; I always strive to foster insights and new skills that will help my students take charge of their own education.

I'm in a good position to talk about how certain concepts are used in the real world. I'm also a huge bookworm and offer SAT Critical Reading prep as well as general tutoring for writing. My hobby is creative writing and I'm currently writing up parts of my dissertation for publication, so I can help with writing from literary analysis to history research papers to the writing aspect of lab reports. When I'm not reading or writing, I'm playing the hammered dulcimer and teaching myself to code in new languages.
I am particularly interested in helping people strengthen their writing skills. Whether you're working on your first high school essay or whether you're refining your undergraduate honors thesis, I can help!
I am known among friends for my love of puzzles, riddles, word problems, and mathematical challenges. I have a deep knowledge of pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus and a passion for teaching it. I also enjoy tutoring Spanish. While foundational vocab and grammar are important, I emphasize speaking and encourage my students to take risks. I believe embracing discomfort is critical to learning a language. Spanish has helped me to travel and live in different communities throughout the world. I strive to kindle a similar appreciation and passion for language in my students.
I'm currently majoring in bioengineering/pre-med at Rice University. I graduated as the valedictorian of my high school class. My interests include biology, math, and violin performance. I've done neuroscience research at the Jungers Center for Neuroscience Reseach and the Oregon National Primate Research Center. I've also done molecular biology research at the Oregon Stem Cell Center.
I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I've always loved Math and the Sciences: the hunt for the right equation to use, the unravelling of the mystery of the value of x. I want to show my students to see these subjects as I do: as a challenge, not a chore. I try to do this by making things simple and showing straightforward techniques that students can use on their own to sidestep mental walls, thus building confidence. I love to see them succeed academically and value the opportunity to be a part of that success.
I'm Owen! I was born and raised in Portland, OR, but I currently live in Rhode Island, where I'm working towards a Bachelor's Degree at Brown University. If there's one thing to know about me, it's that I love to learn, no matter the subject. Learning is a life-long process that can take you anywhere in life. But this doesn't mean it's always easy. It would be my privilege to help you overcome the obstacles you encounter on this journey.
I am particularly passionate about language arts and I hope to help learners realize the beauty, complexity and joy of reading and writing well. I believe that education is transformative and necessary--and that one's education is a lifelong journey. In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, yoga and exploring Portland's many offerings.
I'm a strong believer that education can be fun, and address learning with a sense of humor and a positive attitude. My approach to learning tends to be very communication-based, and often driven by how the client I'm working with feels they learn best. As a result, I tend to provide structure and guidance in a more flexible learning environment.
I am not teaching, I write fiction (my debut book, From the Caves, won several national awards) and my shorter works have appeared in Poets & Writers, Longreads, The Kenyon Review, CRAFT Literary Magazine, New Orleans Review, and elsewhere. Learn more at theaprieto.com.
I am a graduate of The University of Portland, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, I worked for Nike as a Test and Validation Engineer on their Digital Sport products (FuelBand, SportWatch, Nike+, etc.) for one year before returning to graduate school. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, with a focus in design and manufacturing, and will graduate in the summer of 2015.
I am currently a senior attending the University of Notre Dame, and I am pursuing a degree in the Program of Liberal Studies (PLS). PLS is a renowned Great Books program that aims to perfect the student's ability to think critically in a variety of disciplines, such as literature, philosophy, and history. In PLS, great emphasis is placed on formulating deep and effective arguments and presenting them clearly in a technically correct manner, both in class and through my written work. Consequently, I have had much practice writing and editing my own work as well as editing that of my classmates. I am also pursuing a minor in education and am seriously considering pursuing a career in the educational field after graduating. I am passionate about helping others learn to the fullest extent of their abilities while enjoying the subject at the same time!

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Aloha's 6 schools with personalized 1-on-1 instruction. Whether your student attends an elementary, middle, or high school in the area, we can match them with a tutor who understands their specific curriculum and academic needs.
While Aloha's student-teacher ratio of 16.2:1 is solid, personalized 1-on-1 tutoring offers something classroom instruction can't: complete focus on your student's individual learning style, pace, and gaps. A tutor can spend an entire session on exactly what your student struggles with, rather than moving at a class pace. This targeted approach is especially valuable for students who need to catch up, accelerate, or prepare for standardized tests.
Tutors working with Aloha students are familiar with Oregon's standards and expectations across subjects like math, reading, science, and social studies. They can identify where your student may be falling behind relative to grade-level benchmarks and create a focused plan to build confidence and mastery in those areas.
Aloha students seek help across a wide range of subjects, with math and reading comprehension being particularly common, especially during transitions between elementary and middle school. We also work with many students on test prep for standardized assessments, writing skills, and foundational subjects like science. Varsity Tutors can connect you with a tutor for virtually any subject your student needs support in.
The first session is an opportunity for the tutor to get to know your student—their learning style, current challenges, and goals. The tutor will likely assess where your student stands academically and discuss what success looks like for your family. From there, they'll create a personalized plan tailored to your student's needs and schedule regular sessions to track progress.
Varsity Tutors offers flexible pricing options to fit different family budgets and needs. Pricing varies based on the tutor's expertise, subject area, and frequency of sessions. We recommend starting with a conversation about your student's needs and budget—we can help you find a tutoring plan that works for your family.
We take time to understand your student's specific needs, learning style, and goals before making a match. Varsity Tutors connects you with a tutor who has expertise in the subject area and experience working with students at your child's level. If the first match isn't quite right, we can help find a better fit.
Your tutor will communicate regularly about your student's progress, strengths, and areas where they're making gains. Most families see improvement in grades, test scores, or confidence within a few weeks of consistent tutoring. We encourage ongoing communication between you, your student, and the tutor to ensure tutoring is meeting your goals.
