I see a certain magic in helping someone understand something about the world, and I want to experience that magic over and over again. I have had experience working with students at many levels of education, from elementary school through students working on graduate degrees. I have a bachelor's in chemistry from Reed College and a Ph.D. in radiochemistry from the University of Missouri, where I also took a minor in college teaching. I currently tutor elementary, middle school, and high school math and science subjects. Chemistry is my first love, and I enjoy tutoring chemistry and biology because explanations in these fields involve telling a good story about why weirdly different things are actually the same thing. My teaching philosophy is founded on being a good listener: I cannot help you learn something new unless you can tell me what you already know, so I am ready to listen to you. Outside of academia, I'm into woodworking, other arts and crafts, exploring my city, and gardening. I have two children who do a good job of showing me the world through their fresh eyes.

Tutoring has been an important part of my life since elementary school when I helped kindergartners to read. Once I was in high school, I tutored algebra and pre-algebra over one summer for a math tutoring camp where we worked with students who had failed algebra in the past. When they were allowed individual attention and the chance to take tests when they were ready, many excelled. I also was the only student to tutor after school among teachers. (Since I graduated, the school has created a designated program for high-performing students to do the same.) Now I attend Reed College full time as an English major.Unsurprisingly, English is my favorite subject to tutor. I have created grammar worksheets for fun in my spare time and enjoy editing essays. I have helped students from various language backgrounds including ESL and strong native speakers. Unlike most English majors, I also love mathematics. By the age of 16, I was in AP Calculus, and feel comfortable teaching all math below what I have taken. Algebra is a strong suit of mine, but I also enjoy trigonometry.I believe that teaching is about building a comfortable but professional relationship with each student. It is part of my job to come to understand each student and to be able to educate each of them in a personalized manner. Every student is an opportunity to mentor. Education is not only about learning academia but also about developing socially and morally. My goal is to build helpful mentoring relationships with each of my students in order to encourage them to excel in all aspects of young life.

I worked as a peer tutor in high school and college, and have tutored English, Math, Reading, Writing, Attic Greek, Latin, and Humanities. I also spent five years as a Hebrew School teacher where I worked with elementary age children teaching basic Hebrew and Jewish studies. I'm passionate about tutoring because I believe every student can achieve any academic goal they set their mind to as long as they are given the tools for success. I aim to turn every "I can't" into "I know I can." I want to instill in my students a confidence in their own academic abilities and a true love of learning. I like to work with a student's unique skills to help them master new or difficult material. My ultimate goal is to help my students truly comprehend the material, and be able to apply what they have learned when encountering new problems and questions. When I'm not working I spend my time hiking at the Sandy River Delta with my husky puppy, Kili, or whipping up new vegan recipes. I love to read, especially modern fiction and historical biographies, and try to travel as much as I am able; my most recent trip was to Italy, and this winter I am heading South to the Antarctic.

As a tutor, I believe that students benefit from a variety of approaches, depending on their backgrounds, current situations and feelings about writing. I believe the most important part of tutoring is empowering the student to feel that he/she is capable of writing and reading well and correcting his/her own errors. I work hard on overcoming the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness that many students experience when faced with writing.I started teaching writing in 1987. Most recently, since 2005, I have taught beginning and advanced comp at Passaic County Community College, advised and tutored students in danger of failing college at Marymount, run the writing component of the CAP program at Pace University (a program which allows students who would not normally be accepted to have a year's probation, when their work needs to be brought up to college level), and taught freshman comp and advanced research classes at York-CUNY. I also piloted and designed a class for below college level writers at Rutgers University Graduate School of Social Work. In private tutoring through Sponsors for Educational Opportunity, I have worked with high school students with issues including ESL, Developmental Delays and emotional barriers.Besides freshman comp, I have also taught advanced research and writing skills classes for all majors, and helped students prepare multi-media and new media presentations. I have worked with populations ranging from pre-GED to graduate level and am extremely flexible in my teaching approach. I have a BA, MA and PhD in English.

I am thrilled to offer tutoring services because I deeply enjoy helping students find ways to personally connect with given subject matter. Working one-on-one with students allows me to tailor my approach to individual learning styles (aural, logical, verbal, visual, kinesthetic, or, as is most often the case, a combination). Not only does focusing on learning style lead to effective learning and retention, but it also helps students recognize how they best learn so that they can utilize those strengths and methods in other scenarios as well. My goal as a tutor is not just to see students through one class or one specific assignment, although, of course, those situations do come into play. Rather, my overall mission is to help students build skills, confidence, and self-awareness so that they can continue to succeed and evolve as learners for the rest of their lives. As a teacher with a background in the humanities, I specifically bring to the table in-depth knowledge of how to structure and execute written compositions and public presentations. I love working with students to organize their ideas so that they can present their thoughts, insights, and opinions in the best possible light. Very often, a students difficulty with writing papers or preparing presentations has nothing to do with a lack of information or ideasit simply has to do with not knowing how to arrange or communicate those ideas. As a tutor, I can help students develop techniques for creating outlines and structuring their thoughts so that they are able to handle composition and presentation assignments with confidence.

Working as a tutor is a wonderful opportunity to craft and hone my educational style.I have sat on both sides of the tutoring table, and know how important it is to experience that sense of equality for the student to feel that they have some agency in the resulting relationship. This directly informs my tutoring philosophy. I believe patience and empathy are the keys to excel as tutor. I approach tutoring as a partnership between tutor and student forging an equal rather than hierarchical relationship. We will work together to understand the student's needs so that we can set individual (and realistic) goals and devise strategies to meet them.In my free time, I watch every NBA game I can, visit museums and galleries, and cringe when the Oxford comma is required by sentence structure.

My educational career began at Reed College, where I obtained my bachelor's degree in Classics and English Language and Literature. I specifically delved into the intricacies of Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean studies, alongside the rich tapestry of both poetic and prose writing. These disciplines not only expanded my intellectual horizons but also ignited a fervor within me to share the wonders of these subjects with others. During my time at Reed College, I served as a dedicated peer tutor, offering support and guidance to fellow students in a range of subjects, including Greek, Latin, and English. As a peer tutor, I had the privilege of working closely with individuals, providing personalized assistance tailored to their unique learning styles and needs. Moreover, I also had the opportunity to meet with students in group settings, where I learned to foster an environment conducive to academic growth through collaboration and teamwork. Through my role as a peer tutor, I not only deepened my own understanding of the subjects I tutored but also cultivated invaluable communication and teaching skills, empowering my peers to excel academically and confidently tackle challenges in their studies. As a tutor proficient in Latin, Greek, English, and History, I find immense fulfillment in guiding students through the complexities of these subjects. I believe that each session is an opportunity to engage with the material passionately, embracing the challenges that accompany learning and teaching alike. My teaching philosophy revolves around the principle of adaptability; I listen attentively to the needs of my students and tailor my approach accordingly. Whether it's incorporating visual aids for visual learners or incorporating interactive activities to enhance comprehension, I strive to create a dynamic learning environment that caters to diverse learning styles. Moreover, I recognize the importance of fostering a supportive and nurturing atmosphere conducive to learning. I advocate for breaks as needed to promote student well-being and ensure optimal productivity, as well as maintaining open communication so students feel comfortable addressing any issues they see in our tutoring sessions. By prioritizing the holistic development of my students, I aim to instill confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love for learning.

I recently graduated Reed College with a BA in Philosophy. I worked as a peer tutor at Reed, but my tutoring experience goes back to my high school years, to when I volunteered to tutor elementary school and middle school students struggling with their schoolwork, and realized how significant a tutor can be in a student's life. Ever since that time I have been passionate about tutoring. I have worked with students of all ages and skill levels, in my volunteer work, as a private tutor, and as a peer tutor.Tutoring is a one-on-one experience, and I've found that the key to good tutoring is to realize that every individual student is different. My tutoring philosophy is that tutoring should by no means follow a one-size-fits-all approach. In my tutoring practice I focus on treating students as unique individuals, determining what is effective for each student, and getting to know each student's particular academic needs and goals. When it comes to SAT prep, I believe that understanding the material is always more important than simply understanding the test. I teach specific testing strategies and tricks, but I ensure that at the heart of my tutoring is the academic material itself. A student who simply masters the strategies and tricks might do great on the SAT, but the student who understands the material will do great on the SAT and continue to do great in college.I have particular experience and expertise in tutoring math (of all levels) and SAT prep, but I also tutor for other standardized tests, and for English, philosophy, writing, and history classes. When I'm not tutoring, I'm probably reading, listening to music, cooking desserts or shopping at a thrift store.

This fall, I will transfer into Reed College to study philosophy as a junior. I enjoy reading and writing, being outside and active, cooking and eating good food, playing guitar, climbing rock and ice, and being alive. I am extremely passionate about learning, and love to get people excited about it as well. I like to say that I teach "maieutically;" which comes from the Greek and means "to midwife, or aid in giving birth," in this sense, to an idea. I prefer to ask the student lots of guiding questions, instead of didactically infusing them with answers. This method results in what I like to call "intellectual exhilaration," in other words, the student is excited because they were able to create something out of themselves, instead of being imbued with the ideas of others something sort of rare for children, teens, and college students at times. I look forward to studying with you!
