I recently graduated Reed College with a BA in Philosophy. I worked as a peer tutor at Reed, but my tutoring experience goes back to my high school years, to when I volunteered to tutor elementary school and middle school students struggling with their schoolwork, and realized how significant a tutor can be in a student's life. Ever since that time I have been passionate about tutoring. I have worked with students of all ages and skill levels, in my volunteer work, as a private tutor, and as a peer tutor.Tutoring is a one-on-one experience, and I've found that the key to good tutoring is to realize that every individual student is different. My tutoring philosophy is that tutoring should by no means follow a one-size-fits-all approach. In my tutoring practice I focus on treating students as unique individuals, determining what is effective for each student, and getting to know each student's particular academic needs and goals.When it comes to SAT prep, I believe that understanding the material is always more important than simply understanding the test. I teach specific testing strategies and tricks, but I ensure that at the heart of my tutoring is the academic material itself. A student who simply masters the strategies and tricks might do great on the SAT, but the student who understands the material will do great on the SAT and continue to do great in college.I have particular experience and expertise in tutoring math (of all levels) and SAT prep, but I also tutor for other standardized tests, and for English, philosophy, writing, and history classes.When I'm not tutoring, I'm probably reading, listening to music, cooking desserts or shopping at a thrift store.

My name is Dan, I'm 24 years old, and I live in Portland, Oregon. I currently work overnight at homeless shelters, and hope to tutor consistently in my spare time. This fall, I will transfer into Reed College to study philosophy as a junior. I have taken the last four years off of school to travel, handle some medical issues, work hard, and do some soul-searching. I enjoy reading and writing, being outside and active, cooking and eating good food, playing guitar, climbing rock and ice, and being alive. I am extremely passionate about learning, and love to get people excited about it as well. I like to say that I teach "maieutically;" which comes from the Greek and means "to midwife, or aid in giving birth," in this sense, to an idea. I prefer to ask the student lots of guiding questions, instead of didactically infusing them with answers. This method results in what I like to call "intellectual exhilaration," in other words, the student is excited because they were able to create something out of themselves, instead of being imbued with the ideas of others something sort of rare for children, teens, and college students at times. I attended Reed College and received my BA in Mathematics, 2014.While completing my undergraduate degree, I have been tutoring Math for the last two years and preparing for graduate school to earn my Teaching degree.My favorite subject is Multivariable Calculus because it led me to realize that I wanted to help other people learn Math.I have taken college courses such as Number Theory, Analysis, Multivariable Calculus, Quantum Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, Geometry, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, and completed a senior thesis on Differentiation Over Quotient Spaces.I am enthusiastic about applying Math to real life and finding new ways to make Math more approachable.

My intention is to purse a PhD program and one become a professor. I believe that good communication is vital to good teaching, regardless of the subject. I have always had strong mathematical abilities, and feel that I effectively assess and convey the relevant conceptual framework needed to approach problems. Therefore my main subjects are Literature, English, and Mathematics.In my spare time I enjoy reading, traveling, studying music, and science. I was a student of Chemistry for several years, but then I decided to pursue literature for my degrees. My favorite author is Shakespeare (I have one article about his plays accepted for publication by a British journal), but I enjoy various time periods and genres of English studies. People often tell me that my enthusiasm for the subject makes me very engaging, and I hope to share this with the students I tutor. Given my interest in good communication, I also will offer pointers for effective writing and public speaking.

I am a current undergraduate student at Reed College with three years of peer tutoring experience specializing in essay writing and reading. I am a third-year Psychology major at Reed College in Portland, OR. I work as a researcher in a cognitive neuroscience lab studying human perception, and I am interested in pursuing a graduate degree in neuroscience.
