Much of my initial tutoring experience was with Spanish-speaking children who, while very smart, were struggling because of the language barrier. Because of this, I understand that there are many factors involved in the success of a student. Immediately after I obtained my PhD in Medical Microbiology at Pasteur Institute of Lille in France, I decided to come to the US in order to continue my research adventure as a Post-doctoral fellow in the field of tuberculosis. My major interest was in identification of genes in the bacterium responsible for human tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). During my post-doctoral fellowship, I realized that though I was enjoying research, I was however missing interactions with students. Therefore, I decided at the end of my post-doctoral position to seek an academic position that would give me the opportunity to fulfill my dream of interacting and above all sharing my educational experience with students. Ten years after deciding to join the academic world, I feel that I have found myself and that I am fulfilling my purpose on earth. What I love the most about teaching is to bring basic biology concepts to life through my research experience. I am able to illustrate basic biology concepts with clear and simple examples that my students can relate to.When I start interacting with a student or a group of students, I get to know them first. Getting to know my students is a key aspect in determining the best approach to convey complicated biology concepts to them. How could you say your own language is the most beautiful of all if you cannot compare it?Learning a foreign language and getting to know an entirely new culture always fascinated me and it has also made me a more open minded person. I studied French in Paris while teaching German. I have a degree in romance languages, linguistics and art history from the University of Heidelberg. I took a detour from the academic world by exploring the language of media, marketing and public relations in the Black Forest and Bavaria. In Los Angeles I was immersed in the unique tongue of the entertainment industry. I continued teaching German and, along the way, became a Certified Life Coach. This has allowed me to connect to the language of peoples souls. In the beautiful mountains of New Mexico I became a writer and published a book in Germany. Everyone has different reasons for learning a language. Of course it is not easy. It takes time and effort but it is well worth it. I would enjoy introducing you to the German culture, as well as the language, in order to make your learning experience fun, effective and most importantly, successful.

One of my core values can be summed up in two words: "Students First." I tell all students, online and offline, that if I am not in class or asleep, it is an office hour. I believe that it is my duty to be as accessible as possible. I believe that all of my students find comfort in the fact that there is someone they can turn to for clarification on a myriad of topics.I also bring a firm understanding that many of our students have a great deal of responsibilities. For example, I was able to convey the microeconomic concept of the production possibilities frontier by having the students visualize a restaurant that produced two goods: salads and sandwiches. The production possibilities frontier is a simple model designed to depict the production capabilities of an economy given common resources, while assuming there are two broad classes of products, consumer goods and capital goods. Traditional economic textbooks love to use a "guns and butter" metaphor, but I have found that the salads and sandwiches example is much more effective. Students are able to quickly understand that they can use common ingredients like meat, cheese, vegetables, bread (rolls for the sandwich or croutons for the salad), and dressing to make sandwiches or salads and, in turn, maximize earnings.Unless the student is destined to become a contestant on "Jeopardy," I do not see the value in students having a plethora of academic knowledge at the ready. It is far more important that students are information literate and that they understand what information is needed, where to find it, how to evaluate it, and how to use it in everyday life.
