I am a country mouse from New England who moved to the big city for college. I studied English at St. John's University in Queens and then put that knowledge to work for my Master's degree in Library Science (also at St. John's). Since I cannot imagine life without being in school, I'm now working on a post-graduate certificate in Education.By day, I'm a school librarian at a large Catholic high school in Queens, where I work and team up with teachers to help students learn about research and academic writing. I also work with students one on one to encourage reading and a love of books. I work frequently to help struggling readers find books that will help them gain confidence and make reading a part of their lives.I love my job; I am passionate about reading and writing. The best part of being a librarian is helping a student find just the right book - a book that will help to spark a lifelong love of reading in them. I firmly believe that the way to get better at reading is to read something you love, and good writers are avid readers too. I spend a lot of my day job coaching students through research-based papers, but it's always a great experience to work with other types of writing, from polishing a knock-your-socks-off college essay to work-shopping creative writing.Over the years, I've tutored at the high school, middle school, and college levels. I've worked with just about every subject, but my specialty really is in Reading and Writing. I love helping students with subjects I know they'll be using in every aspect of their lives. I remember in high school when writing a strong essay finally clicked for me - it was the best feeling in the world. Now, I get that same satisfaction from helping other people find a way to make writing click for them.I love New York and cannot imagine living anywhere else. I love to spend my free time in museums, shows, and just soaking up all of this fantastic city. The best part of New York? Taking the subway means I don't have to worry about keeping my eyes on the road, and instead I can keep them buried in a good book.

Children are very perceptive and I believe they know a lot more than we think they do about people. One thing I would like to say about myself, is that I consider myself to be a team-player. I believe that this can also be translated in the school environment. We are all working for the same team, the students! I am graduating this fall from UChicago with my Master's of Arts in Social Sciences. I have been doing psychology research for four years, and hope to make a career as a research analyst. Over the years, I have done a lot of tutoring, I was a writing tutor at my undergraduate university's Writing Center, and I have been a tutor at an after school program my year in Chicago. I am very passionate about tutoring, and my specialties are writing and psychology/research. I am an introverted but easygoing and friendly person, and I love to read, play flute, go to the beach, and cook!

I am most recently a graduate of New York University having received an MA in Applied Quantitative research. Previous to my graduate studies, I received a BA in Theatre and a BA in Sociology from the University of New Mexico. In the Fall of 2015 I will become a PhD candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center in Sociology. Other than tutoring, I also work as an instructor of English Language Arts as part of a weekend, after-school, and Summer program for 1st generation children in New York City. I tutor in a wide variety of subjects from Writing to Math to Social Studies. I am passionate about education because I believe it is the foundation for building a just society, and I enjoy teaching and learning from people of all ages from elementary to college-age. Following my fellowship placement, I plan to attend law school.I believe that education is the bedrock of society, therefore, I am passionate about finding opportunities to support students in their educational endeavors. In the fall of 2020 I babysat/tutored twin fourth graders and guided them through their virtual schooling. This included helping them with homework, answering questions, providing further prompts/assignments to understand the material at a conceptual level, and providing support and encouragement when they struggled.My teaching philosophy stems from my strong belief in the importance of social emotional learning. The first step in all of my teaching and tutoring experiences has been to establish trust and comfort with my student. Sometimes it's hard for some teachers to break down a complex topic for burgeoning learners because they themselves approach it from a higher level and can't think at a low enough level.After a year of science outreach in high-need Nashville public schools, I've found that I have a knack for breaking down complex concepts to an easy-to-digest format that incorporates math and literature comprehension into real scientific problems.Fortunately, the more I learned about a subject matter, the easier it has been to find meaning and see how it fits into a bigger picture.I want to help you understand things in a big-picture way with real-life examples (usually in the hard sciences). This hopefully will help you with comprehension and memorization.
