With all of the experience that I have acquired over the years, I have become very good at individualizing lessons based on a student's personal needs. Not every student learns in the same way, and for that reason a tutor must always try to discern which methods work best with any given student, in order to ensure that they tailor each student's instruction to whatever best matches that student's learning style.I have been teaching for three years, and am currently working as a curriculum designer for an English as a Second Language Publisher. Prior to that I worked as a private tutor.

I have a strong background in math and science as well as reading and writing and would tailor the session to your specific concerns.

I am a recent Master's Grad in Chemistry from Princeton University. My main teaching experience comes from lots of tutoring in high-school and working as a TA at Princeton this past year (my kids even won me a teaching award for their good reviews!). Before that I got my B.A. in Chemistry from Northwestern University. I'm originally from the Jersey Shore area and went to a special math and science high-school for Ocean County students (also I was Math League captain and have been 2x Ocean County Math League champ). My specialties are in Chemistry and standardized test Math prep. I make sure to have a good time with all of my students and like to joke around while making sure we stay on track. Feel free to reach out with any questions about me you may have. Have a nice day!

Reflecting upon my past educational experiences, I have always appreciated instructors who have taken a personal and individualistic approach. Life is about more than immediate education, and an instructor who could encourage and motivate me to work hard on my own accord were the ones I remembered the most. As an academic tutor, I aim to not only provide excellent quality tutoring and improve scores, but also to connect with the student and improve other equally important qualities such as personal motivation and critical thinking skills. It is my personal belief that after a solid knowledge foundation, critical thinking and self motivation are the two qualities that set someone apart from a great student to an exceptional one. My teaching and tutoring background extends through all ages from very young children to college aged students. The majority of my experience derives from my dance background, first as a substitute dance teacher and then as a frequent choreographer in college. I have also had experience as a peer tutor in several subjects in high school. I thoroughly enjoy working with students of all ages, and my highly diversified background allows me to adapt easily to new people. I am a graduate from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration, majoring in Marketing and minoring in Design.I believe in a firm but encouraging and confidence-building teaching style and my ability to motivate others and provide a support system for students make me confident in the significant contribution I can bring to Varsity Tutors as an Academic Tutor.

I'm a sophomore at Rice University majoring in Biosciences and on the premed track. I've had experience tutoring students, ages ranging from kindergarten through high school. I've helped a lot of my peers with AP courses and classes in high school as a peer tutor. I also have experience helping students prepare for the ACT through Varsity Tutors. I've had students go from a 25 to 32 after 2 months of working with them. It's really rewarding to see students learn and expand their own capabilities. I truly enjoy helping others achieve their goals! In my spare time I like to play badminton and piano.

With a B.S. in Developmental Psychology and preschool education training from Cornell University and a M.Ed in International Education from Harvard University, I became an elementary school teacher at the United Nations International School in New York City. I loved teaching here because of the multicultural atmosphere. I loved interacting with international students and learning about different cultures.I presently tutor at the elementary school level and I especially love teaching math because it's like puzzles to figure out. I use many visual aids and really believe in breaking down everything to the basics and my motto is review, review and review. I believe it's important to go over things because we all forget and that's ok.

I value environments that center service for diverse students and communities and support my goal to strengthen the ability of individuals to understand and participate in positive change in the world around them. My professional experience as an educator is benefited by my academic background in communication studies, rhetoric, writing, and community planning. My background provides me with a broader lens to understand the landscape in which teaching and learning occurs and how that affects our everyday experiences.

I am a senior at Monmouth University majoring in psychology. Upon graduation, I will begin a doctoral program in clinical psychology with a specialization in neuropsychology. I have extensive experience working as a peer tutor at Monmouth University helping fellow students succeed. Through this experience, I became a certified college level tutor and learned how to accommodate students with various learning styles such as visual or auditory. I have also learned how to assist students with mastering time management, organizational, and effective study strategies. I have a passion for tutoring because I enjoy sharing my own insight with a particular subject and help students learn to love the subject material. Although I tutor a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about psychology and assisting students with essay writing. I believe the key to being successful in school is connecting the material to a student's own life. I am dedicated to helping students connect the dots between school subjects and real life scenarios. In my experience, learning can always be enjoyable (even meticulous APA formatting!).

College English Tutor • +13 Subjects

I moved to Virginia about a year and a half ago after being a Californian for most of my adult life. I received a Bachelor's Degree and teaching credential in English from San Diego State University and went on to teach 7th and 8th grade language arts in a diverse public school. I then moved north to beautiful Sonoma County where I completed a Master's degree in English literature. During my time as a graduate student, I began teaching freshman composition classes and worked with small groups of beginning writers, many of whom were the first in their family to attend college. I stayed on as an adjunct instructor teaching courses that focused on expository writing, analytical reading, research, and oral communication skills. Over the course of my 15 year career, I have worked with students from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels, including many students with unique language or learning needs. I have served as an adviser and scorer/rater for numerous written assessment tests (including district and state assessments from elementary through high school, and college entrance and exit exams), and am very familiar with the type of analytical and persuasive writing prompts that students are asked to tackle for such assessments. Despite my extensive experience with argumentation and expository texts, my first love continues to be fiction and poetry, and I would jump enthusiastically at the chance to work with students in the world of literature and creative writing. I believe that students learn best when they are invested, active participants in the learning process, and my job is to listen and guide rather than lecture. I come to our tutoring sessions with a virtual "sackful" of strategies to help you work through challenging material, and by listening, observing and motivating, I can help you access the tools that will be most compatible with your learning style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Varsity Tutors connects students across San Antonio's 42 school districts and 624 schools with personalized tutoring support. With over 333,000 students in the San Antonio area, we work with families from SAISD, North East ISD, Northside ISD, and other districts throughout the region to provide customized instruction that fits each student's unique needs.

Texas has specific learning standards across math, reading, science, and social studies that students must master at each grade level. Tutors work with San Antonio students to strengthen foundational skills, build confidence in tested subjects, and develop the critical thinking strategies needed to succeed on STAAR assessments and in the classroom. Personalized instruction allows tutors to focus on the exact areas where each student needs support.

San Antonio students frequently seek support in math (especially algebra and geometry), reading comprehension, and science—subjects that are heavily tested under Texas standards. Many students also benefit from tutoring in English language arts to strengthen writing skills, and in test preparation for STAAR, SAT, and ACT exams. Tutors can also help with Spanish language instruction, a valuable skill in San Antonio's diverse community.

With an average student-teacher ratio of 14.5:1 across San Antonio's school districts, classroom teachers often have limited time for individualized attention. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring fills that gap by providing dedicated support focused entirely on a student's learning style, pace, and specific challenges—something that's difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom setting.

The first session is designed to build rapport and understand your student's goals, strengths, and areas for improvement. A tutor will assess your student's current knowledge in the subject, discuss what they're working on in school, and create a personalized plan for how tutoring can best support their learning. This foundation helps tutors tailor instruction to match your student's needs from day one.

Yes. While many San Antonio families connect with tutors for math, reading, and science support, tutors also help with subjects like social studies, foreign languages (including Spanish), test preparation, writing skills, and even study strategies. Whatever subject your student is taking in school, Varsity Tutors can help match them with a tutor who has expertise in that area.

San Antonio's 42 school districts each have their own curriculum frameworks and pacing guides, which is why personalized tutoring is so valuable. Tutors work with students from SAISD, North East ISD, Northside ISD, and other districts throughout the area and understand how to support students within their specific district's approach to learning. When you connect with a tutor, you can share details about your student's school and curriculum so instruction aligns perfectly.

Yes. Many San Antonio families use summer tutoring to help students maintain skills over the break, get ahead before the new school year, or catch up on concepts that were challenging during the year. Summer is also a great time for test prep (STAAR, SAT, ACT) or to build confidence in a subject before advancing to the next level. Tutors can work with your schedule to provide flexible support during the summer months.
