I am a senior at the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Plan II Honors, Government, and Philosophy with a certificate in Creative Writing Honors. I am very passionate about writing, reading and editing. My area of concentration lies within the poetry field, but I am well-versed in fiction and non-fiction as well. I would love to help build writing and editing skills!I also have lots of experience tutoring middle school math and algebra. I've tutored my younger sister, who has ADHD, through middle school and now 9th grade, all subjects. Throughout college I tutored other university students in one on one and in small groups environments. While most my tutoring experience is with older students, I have 5 years of experience teaching and coaching swimming to kids ranging from 2-17.In my spare time I enjoy all things outdoors, from backpacking to hiking to climbing or swimming as long as I am outside I am happy. Because I have been through the same learning difficulties, I know how to explain the topics in a way that is easily understood.As for my tutoring style, I like to get to know the student's goals, difficulties, and schedule, and tutor the student accordingly. In the tutoring sessions, if you don't have any specific questions or homework to do, I'll do a brief review of the topic, and then ask you to work a few example problems. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Commercial Art at Ohio State University, but it didnt take me long to realize that working behind a drawing board all day was not my life ambition. I wanted to teach. So back to school I went to get certified as an English teacher. Now I have a Masters Degree and a PhD from the University of Oregon. And for nearly forty years, Ive taught a wide range of subjects in middle schools, high schools, and colleges: English, Speech, and Composition as well as Theater and Acting. But by far my greatest passion is teaching Writing and Composition. Like many educators, I believe that good writing is a predecessor to greater success in life; but Im also convinced that good writing is a skill you can learn, not simply a talent youre born with. Thats what makes teaching writing so important to me: I love to help students discover what theyre doing wrong in their compositions and what they can do to create writing that is more powerful and effective. At the same time, I try to impart an appreciation for words and language, grammar and literature, spoken and written. I love reading, writing, watching movies, and shopping for antiques in my spare time.

Since graduation, I worked as an elementary school teacher in Detroit, Michigan as a 2012 Teach for America Corps member, I am most passionate about English, Math and Reading.I am currently a founding kindergarten teacher at KIPP Columbus Elementary where I have the honor to work with talented students everyday. In my experience working with elementary students I have seen tremendous growth in the area of reading and math because I work hard to bring these two subjects to life so students can reach their fullest potential.
