I recently graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and a minor in Spanish in June 2018. I am currently living in Santa Barbara and getting ready to apply to medical school.Science has always been a passion of mine, which is why I desire to pursue a career in healthcare. Another contributor to this desire is my love of helping others. I have dedicated a lot of time in both high school and college mentoring and tutoring others. I always participated in peer study groups while in college, especially for my science classes; I loved learning from others as well as teaching them subjects I loved and understood. Obtaining my graduate degree at the Montclair State University in Communication Science and Disorders has equipped me to work with children with special needs in the New York City public schools for the last 13 years, among other settings. As a homeschooling mom to six wonderful children, I have discovered a love for teaching reading to children. Seeing how much my students who had reading difficulties struggled with their academics bolstered my resolve to train in the Orton-Gillingham method with the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education. Being a Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist and a Speech Language Pathologist enables me to most effectively help students improve their reading skills, since it is necessary to have good language comprehension and word recognition skills to become skilled at reading. I believe that a good evaluation is essential in getting to know my student's current level of functioning, strengths, areas for improvement, learning styles, and motivators. Caregiver or parent involvement is another very important ingredient in the learning process. When I'm not teaching, I love hanging out with my husband and six children. I also enjoy reading, baking, and creating digital therapy and educational materials.

I also minored in child development to better understand how brains learn differently across the lifespan; as a result, I understand ways to tailor my tutoring practice to the age of the student I'm working with. For example, the brain becomes much better at thinking abstractly over time as it becomes able to hold more pieces of information in mind at once. Thus, when tutoring younger children, it's helpful to rely much more on pictures and other visuals so the young learner doesn't have to maintain all the information from the discussion in their heads. My minor in computer science stemmed from my desire to pursue a career in educational technology. Technology can make learning more interactive and engaging for students no matter the subject, and I am interested in designing software that makes the learning process fun. Both subjects offer a lot of room for students to put their own, personalized touch on their work, which lends itself well to my personal tutoring style.
