I am an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago, working towards a pre-med double major in Psychology and Biology (with a specialization in Neuroscience). Beginning in my early teens, I began working and volunteering as a tutor in a variety of environments: I began as a volunteer at a summer program for underprivileged children at the Learning and Tutoring Center of East Austin, and since I have worked as a private elementary school tutor, a private SAT-prep tutor, and a preschool tutor for the Neighborhood Schools Program in South Side Chicago. I have taken, and succeeded in, a broad range of Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, and am familiar with the latest formats, question varieties, and scoring guidelines of these standardized tests, along with the SAT. My teaching philosophy is to go beyond "teaching to the test". Although test-taking skills are crucial for any assessment, I believe the most valuable thing a tutor can do is to enhance and help develop conceptual understanding in our clients. I believe that once a student understands something at the conceptual level, he or she will be much better prepared for the topic, not only in the specific test we are preparing for, but anywhere else it may come up. Memorizing words or equations might help somebody in the short term, but understanding why that word means what it means, or what an equation is actually depicting is worth the extra effort. Besides test-prep I think I can be a great help in writing and editing, as I have experience in everything from short, timed essays such as the SAT essay, to college essays, to research papers such as the IB Extended Essay. I am fully fluent in Spanish for anyone who wishes to communicate in or practice the language.

I am a rising senior at Duke University who is Pre Med and majoring in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. I was born and raised in Miami FL and went to public school until college (Sunset Elementary, GW Carver Middle and Coral Reef Senior High for those from Miami). I decided to start tutoring because I would not be on this path had I not had good teachers supporting me along the way. For that reason I want to be able to help others achieve their goals without academics being a huge hurdle.

I am a Vassar and Dartmouth educated woman with a passion for learning and for making learning fun. I believe in not only helping a student with the assignment at hand, but rather to teach and enforce tools and skills that will help each student for a lifetime. I also believe in customizing my lesson plans to each student rather than emphasizing a "one style fits all" approach. I am positive, energetic, and thrive on helping others succeed and reach their goals. Hobbies: swimming, writing, singing, art, books, reading, music

I'm passionate about guiding high schoolers through the college application process. The admissions process is probably one of the most confusing, anxiety-inducing experiences you'll have in high school, but I'm full of ideas for making the entire process as successful and stress-free as possible. I've successfully guided many students through every stage of admissions -- from figuring out where to apply and then staying organized and on-track, to "packaging" themselves and producing a perfect personal statement -- and I love witnessing them achieve their admissions dreams.

I am a graduate of SUNY University at Albany. I received my Bachelor of Science in Economics and Japanese with a minor in History in 2010. Since then (and even before as a sub) I have predominantly been teaching in the New York City public education system. I had worked as a substitute teaching assistant since 2008, moving between dozens of NYC public schools before finally settling in late 2011 at M.S. 216 George J. Ryan--an incredibly diverse middle school in Queens. During my tenure in the school system I have spent time teaching students from Pre-K to 12th grade, from all cultural background and socioeconomic statuses. Regardless of whom I have taught, I have always enjoyed it, partly because I often learn as much from my students as they learn from me. Regardless of the subject, I love teaching, and I find it to be one of the most rewarding and meaningful activities, which cliched as it may sound, really can make a difference in people's lives. Besides teaching, I am also keenly interested in the human body, specifically biomechanics, kinesiology, and rehabilitation through movement. I am currently enrolled in a Doctorate of Physical Therapy program at Washington University in St. Louis, which I should finish in 2018. Hobbies: art, books, sports, reading, music, writing

I am an accomplished musician (trumpet, jazz improvisation) and college instructor (history, humanities, music) who is experienced with students at all levels and from a variety of backgrounds. I enjoy hands-on, one-to-one interactions with my students and use an approach based on mutual respect and cordiality. I particularly like helping students to develop reading, writing, and analytical skills that are useful in the social sciences and business. I also enjoy teaching music fundamentals, especially jazz theory and jazz improvisation with a creative approach that combines aspects of cultural understanding and music theory.

I am a recent graduate from the University of Florida. I completed my studies in Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience and have minors in statistics and business administration. I am currently going on to obtain a Master in Computational Social Science at the University of Chicago. I am passionate about research, data collection, and analysis in the area of cognitive psychology. My specialties lie in Psychology and Statistics and I have a very strong mathematical foundation. I have experience working with middle school and high school aged students as a tutor through the national honor society club, which I was a member of as a high school student. I think that data science and research is important for our future, so I am motivated to help students learn and appreciate math and science as important tools.

Frequently Asked Questions
Varsity Tutors connects students across Coconut Creek's 11 schools with personalized 1-on-1 instruction. With nearly 10,000 students in the area, we work with learners from elementary through high school who need support in core subjects, test prep, and specialized academics. Whether your student attends a public or charter school in Coconut Creek, we can match them with a tutor who understands local curriculum standards.
Florida's B.E.S.T. (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) standards emphasize critical thinking and real-world application—areas where personalized instruction excels. Tutors working with Coconut Creek students focus on mastering Florida-specific benchmarks in math, reading, science, and social studies, while also building the problem-solving skills that help students succeed on state assessments. This targeted approach addresses both content mastery and the deeper understanding Florida's standards require.
While Coconut Creek schools maintain a student-teacher ratio of 18.7:1, individual students often need more focused attention than classroom settings can provide—especially when tackling challenging concepts or preparing for critical assessments. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to adapt their teaching to your student's specific learning style, pace, and goals, filling gaps that classroom instruction alone may not address. This is particularly valuable for students preparing for AP exams, standardized tests, or struggling with foundational skills.
Your student's first session begins with an assessment where the tutor learns about their current level, learning style, and specific goals—whether that's improving grades, preparing for the SAT/ACT, or mastering a difficult subject. The tutor then creates a personalized plan and begins instruction tailored to your student's needs. Most families notice that students feel more confident and engaged after that first session because the instruction is designed specifically for them, not a classroom of 25 students.
Coconut Creek students frequently seek support in algebra, geometry, and precalculus—areas where many students hit conceptual roadblocks—as well as English/language arts for reading comprehension and writing skills. We also work with many students preparing for AP courses, standardized tests like the SAT and ACT, and state-mandated assessments. Science tutoring (biology, chemistry, physics) is another common request, especially as students prepare for college entrance requirements.
Varsity Tutors uses information about your student's subject, grade level, learning style, and goals to connect them with an expert tutor who's a strong fit. We consider factors like the tutor's teaching approach, expertise in specific topics, and availability to ensure compatibility. If your student and tutor aren't the right match, we'll help find someone better—your student's success is the priority.
Yes—tutoring sessions can be scheduled around your family's calendar, whether that's after school, weekends, or during school breaks. Many Coconut Creek families appreciate the flexibility to adjust frequency and timing based on their needs, whether their student needs intensive support before a big test or ongoing help throughout the school year. We work with you to create a tutoring plan that fits your life.
Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions—there's no one-size-fits-all price. We recommend starting with a consultation where we discuss your student's needs and can provide pricing information tailored to your situation. Many families find that the investment in personalized instruction pays dividends through improved grades, test scores, and academic confidence.
