I started looking into tutoring when I was looking for opportunities to earn money during the summers while I'm working on my Ph.D. in Philosophy. It seemed like an ideal set-up for me since I teach at a community college and I wanted to continue developing those teaching skills in my job. It also allows me to set a schedule that works with my ongoing classes. Here's a more in depth look at my career in academia: I entered my first college (Furman University) with the plan of double-majoring in English and Computer Science because I love to read and love technology. I didn't have any clear career path in mind, but I thought I'd start by following what I'm enthusiastic about. My experience in those classes showed me a darker side of those studies: books like Middlemarch and debugging. Ugh. I found my philosophy class, which I took as part of the core curriculum, to be far more interesting. So I followed that passion to three (I'm m still working on the third) graduate degrees. The first was an M.A. in Philosophy from Texas Tech University and the second was an M.S. in Ethics and Public Policy from Suffolk University. After the second Master's I settled in to do some adjunct professor work at Collin College. It's difficult to earn a living as an adjunct professor. The pay is terrible and it's hard to find enough hours to make a living wage, so I had a second job as a building manager. So, I decided to go back to school to earn my doctorate so that I can work full time in my field at a decent wage. Now I'm in the Ph.D. in philosophy program at the University of South Florida. I'm experiencing some success in the program: besides earning straight As, I was invited to present one of my papers at the University of Hawaii this year. That's where my profile pic was taken. When I'm not occupied with school work, I like playing the piano and guitar, reading (mostly) Sci-Fi novels, kayaking and fishing with my wife, playing video games, and playing strategy board games (they've gotten a lot better since Monopoly).I hope that gives you a sense of who I am and that we can have a productive tutoring relationship in the future!

AP United States History Tutor • +15 Subjects
I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. In 2014, I completed my Master of Arts degree in History from Auburn University. I am currently a PhD student of History at Georgia State University. Through my education I have had the opportunity to work closely with students as an instructor and graduate teaching assistant. While at Auburn, I also worked with student athletes as a lecturer and tutor, assisting them in their World History course. I am passionate about History, Literature, and Writing, and truly enjoy working with students in these fields. I find that students learn best when they are working collaboratively with their instructor, and I firmly believe that active engagement between the student and instructor provides the best opportunity for students to grasp the material. Education and learning can be a fun process, and I strive to make sure my students enjoy History, Literature, and Writing as much as I do. Outside of my academic work I enjoy, reading, watching and playing sports, especially basketball, and playing with my dogs.

Since returning to the United States, I have worked in several venues providing linguistic translation services and assisting in ESL assignments. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am passionate about comparative religion, Spanish and SAT prep. I am a believer in practical based application and will always bring learning back to the "Why". I believe that this not only enhances a deeper understanding of a subject but also encourages overall retention. In my spare time, I enjoy a work-life balance that includes weight-lifting, podcast binging, meditation and yoga, reading and novel writing along with an occasional visit to Children's Mercy Park to see KC Sporting win another match.

Learning can be hard. Teachers are busy and you have twenty other classmates also vying for their attention. Sometimes you just need someone to help you explain a topic, one on one, and walk you through examples. Maybe you just want someone to check your homework for errors, or make sure your essay makes sense. I am available for all of this help and more. But the one thing I promise is a stress free environment. It is easier to learn when things are chill.

AP Biology Tutor • +25 Subjects
I am recent graduate of Binghamton University, with a Bachelor of Sciences in Biology. I am deeply committed to the value of education, and believe that learning is a gift and an opportunity for growth that should be available to everyone. For this reason, I am passionate about tutoring and helping students, so that everyone is able to not only do well in school, but to fall in love with learning in the process. Anyone can enrich themselves through learning. This is the foundation of my teaching philosophy: in addition to emphasizing results and academic achievement, I believe it is integral to find an individual approach to each student and to focus first and foremost on teaching students to study in a way that is effective and engaging. I tutor elementary, middle, and high school students in all subjects. In my free time, I like to go running, practice dance, learn new languages, and play ping-pong.

That year, I also received a 5 on my AP exams in Calculus AB, English Language, U.S. History, and U.S. Government.I am happy to tutor students in mathematics, English, and social sciences (e.g., history, government). I especially enjoy tutoring pre-algebra and algebra.I believe in a practice-based approach in which I take students step-by-step through the concepts at hand. After practicing together with my guidance, the student will soon be able to apply what they have learned on their own.

After more than twenty years teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, I have come to realize that my teaching must be practical, grounded in real-world experience, and student-focused. I believe that my job as a teacher is to help students prepare for their life's work, however they may choose to define this concept. This idea is something that I reflect on, usually at the beginning of the academic year, to reinforce to myself the extent to which my students are counting on me as a teacher, the importance of what I am setting out to do, and the dedication required to achieve this goal.

I grew up in South Florida where I went to an IB high school and gained my IB Diploma. I flourished under the personal attention that I was able to get with the small class sizes for the IB program, as well as the familiarity with the teachers. It was a driving factor in the my college choice. I went to Swarthmore College, a liberal arts college outside of Philadelphia. There, I completed my Bachelor's degree in Latin American Studies. I plan to continue my education and get a Master's in Public Policy. My tutoring philosophy partially comes from what worked with me, but it also from my experience working with students. I worked in a high school as an interventionist working with small groups of students. Although, they were considered to be at the same level that did not necessarily mean that my lesson plan would work for everyone in that group. I also tutored these same students and others after school and that was often where I got to know them as students the best. I just think it is really important to recognize that every student is an individual, so they should get a unique experience. The tutor and the student should work together to figure out what is best.I tutor all levels of English: reading, writing, and literature; this includes test preparation for AP, IB PSAT, and SAT. I also tutor U.S., World, and European history as well as U.S. Government and Politics. I also tutor Spanish up to the level of AP Spanish Language and IB Spanish. I genuinely like all the subjects that I tutor and I look forward to helping other people like them too!For fun I like to read. I like to read articles about weird bits of trivia and analyzing pop culture. I love super hero movies. I prefer the Marvel movies because I like it when the good guys save the world and they are funny while doing it. I like to watch television. If the show has some supernatural element to it, I have probably watched it.
