Recent Winnipeg Evolution Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I continued to review his genetics chapter in this section. He is very good at drawing out a Punnett square and figuring out the resulting genotypes. Where he most often runs into trouble is distinguishing a genotype ratio from a phenotype ratio - in other words, understanding the percent of individuals who have a certain genotype and why those percents might differ when it comes to phenotype. We reviewed this in several problems and I hope he has a better understanding of it now. We also reviewed incomplete dominance and co-dominance, including their possible ratios and how each differs.
Topics in this session included differences between meiosis and mitosis, ploidy number in each step (interphase, prophase, etc.), and a basic overview of our next topic we will discuss: plants.
This first session with the student went well. I think she will benefit from not only someone to review biology concepts with her and talk through examples, but also from study skills advice. I tried to integrate both into our first meeting and I hope that it helped her! We mainly discussed review topics for her upcoming test that spanned genetic shift, how to read relationships between different species, and the probability of different genetic mixes and phenotype outcomes.
Today the student had a ton of biology homework, working on protists and fungi. We discussed cellular function and organelles, structure, eating habits, and environmental significance of the different types of protists and fungi.
Today we reviewed resting potential, action potentials, and neurotransmitter release. The student drew out a diagram of the action potential which will be very helpful in solidifying information. I also lent her a diagram of the nephron I think she would find very helpful. Overall, great session.
Today we worked on two assignments. The first was monohybrid crosses and we established a system of thinking systematically through the problem so as not to get overwhelmed by the information in the problem. She seemed to understand Punnett squares and just needed to work through the problems systematically. After several problems, she asked to switch to the cancer worksheet because she felt it would be a more productive use of time. The cancer worksheet consisted of reading paragraphs about cell division and summarizing each paragraph in one sentence when given a prompt. She stated that she has difficulty with the big picture and not getting caught up in details, so I tried several methods to help her including highlighting, color coding, and taking the worksheet away and asking her to explain the concepts to me in plain conversation. She is a very bright girl and I am excited to continue working with her.
