What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I've found that going over quick problems to discover where they are currently is helpful! I like to know a student's problem areas so that we have targeted sessions moving forward and that they can grasp concepts they currently might not understand.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
It depends! If it's a foreign language learning session, I might use fun kid games and other listening methods to help students learn better.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
By making games or fun ways to learn how to go over difficult concepts. I want students to feel confident in tackling difficult material! The biggest hurdle is fear, so once they get past that they usually do amazing!
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would give them various tests as a final method. But, usually, having them explain problems to me is the best method. Letting them become the teacher helps them build confidence, as well as points out any problem areas.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I build their confidence by making them teach the material to me as well as come up with scripts or lessons to show that they have learned the material. Doing fun games is always great, but the best confidence builder is having them do it themselves and showing them they can do it.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I usually do a wide range of various problems that touch on different problem areas. This way, we can isolate what needs to be worked on from what are stronger areas.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Every student is different. So, once realizing that, you adapt to the student's age, their knowledge of the material, and their current confidence in the subject matter.
