I am well versed in all types of questions the students will be faced with on homework or exams. Also, in addition to my teaching experience at Purdue, I have been teaching a one week course in Shanghai yearly since 2008 to prepare Chinese Occupational Health and Safety professionals to take the Certified Industrial Hygienist exam and part of what I help them with are some of the tricks of the trade for successfully taking these types of exams. I also helped my daughter prepare for her GRE exam when her GRE Boot Camp program was suddenly cancelled my prep work with her helped her increase her math score approximately 100 points.

I am a fourth year Medical Student in the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at CCNY. This is a seven year BS/MD program, so by the end of the seven years, I will have achieved both degrees. I have a lot of tutoring experience in the K-12 age especially in the 7-12 grade range. I have taught SAT, SHSAT, ACT, SAT subject tests and Regents exams as well. My favorite subject to tutor is math and biology, but I am able to tutor other subject areas like reading, writing, chemistry, and physics. My tutoring style is very student oriented with some lecturing. I make sure that most of the time I am asking questions, even if it is basic, just to get the student to always be on his/her feet. I also make sure to use a lot of diagrams and flow charts when teaching. Outside of school, I spend a lot of time exploring and doing photography. I also love listening to music, watching basketball, and spending time with friends and family. Hobbies: books, photography, writing, reading, music, art

I'm sure of, it's that I genuinely enjoy tutoring. I'm also a "professional" student. I say this because absorbing, analyzing, and integrating knowledge from my medical courses are necessary skills for my own academic success. And so, I am more than happy to share my study strategies, techniques, and tips with students.

I am from Tulsa, OK and came to Boston for college. I studied Biomedical Engineering at both Boston University during undergrad and Tufts University for my masters. After much thought, I deviated from a medical school track to pursue a career in the medical device industry. My love for math and science started around middle school, and I was strongly influenced by my teachers. Through tutoring, I hope to be a similar influence. I really enjoy working with students of all ages (elementary to grads!) In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, hiking, and volunteering at the Animal Rescue League in Boston. Hobbies: books, music, hiking, art, reading, cooking, writing

I am currently in a Physician Assistant program at University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth and am loving every minute of clinical practice! I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Philosophy from University of St Thomas. While an undergraduate student, I enjoyed leading fellow pre-health professional classmates as campus President of HOSA-Future Health Professionals. One of my most unforgettable health care experiences was a two-week medical missions trip which involved extensive teamwork for fundraising and bringing medical supplies to serve a remote and underserved village in Huancayo, Peru. I also received a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences from University of North Texas Health Science Center and am pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant. While pursuing my master's degree, I learned to ask for help from teaching assistants and tutors, and am immensely grateful for their guidance! I am interested in academia after gaining several years of clinical experience as a PA. In my free-time, I enjoy cooking, dancing, and spending time with my two lovely poodles. I am also passionate about rescuing animals!

I am a University of Michigan College of Pharmacy and will be graduating this April with my Doctor of Pharmacy degree. One of the reasons I chose to go into pharmacy school was so that I could make a difference in people???s lives, no matter how big or small. That is also why I have a passion for tutoring, something I have been doing since 2012. I absolutely love seeing a student???s face light up with understanding and seeing him/her improve as time goes by. I think the best way to tutor is to find the root of the issue whether it???s time management, difficulty in understanding the material, or difficulty in applying the material; and then using different strategies to really address that issue in a collaborative manner in order to really help the student improve. As someone currently in graduate school, I have seen my peers struggle with subjects and struggled myself. Through this and my past experiences tutoring, I have come up with many different strategies for learning and ways to address a student???s different learning style as well. During my spare time, I love trying new things, completing jigsaw puzzles (my current challenge is a 2000 piece puzzle!), learning how to sew and make my own clothes, and just being outside and exploring the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fifth graders often find Earth and space science concepts challenging—particularly understanding Earth's layers, the water cycle, and weather patterns—because these require visualizing systems they can't directly observe. Life science topics like plant and animal life cycles, ecosystems, and food chains also trip up students who try to memorize facts rather than understand the relationships between organisms. Physical science concepts like force, motion, and simple machines can feel abstract without hands-on exploration, and many students confuse related terms like speed versus velocity. A tutor can break these down into concrete examples and visual models that make the connections click.

Fifth grade is when students transition from simple observations to actual experimental design, and many struggle with forming testable hypotheses or identifying variables. A tutor can guide students through the scientific method step-by-step, helping them ask better questions, design fair tests, and interpret results meaningfully rather than just following a worksheet. This builds critical thinking skills that transfer across all science topics—whether they're predicting what happens in a food chain or explaining why a simple machine works. Strong scientific reasoning also helps students move beyond "the answer is in the textbook" thinking and develop genuine curiosity about how the world works.

Concepts like the water cycle, Earth's interior layers, and molecular structure are hard to grasp from diagrams alone. Tutors use hands-on demonstrations, sketching techniques, and real-world analogies—like comparing Earth's layers to an onion, or showing how water actually evaporates and condenses using a simple classroom experiment. For life science topics, creating food webs on paper or acting out predator-prey relationships helps students internalize how ecosystems work. When students can visualize or physically interact with a concept, they move from surface-level memorization to genuine understanding that sticks.

Fifth graders should be comfortable using basic tools like rulers, thermometers, balances, and magnifying glasses, and understanding how to collect and record data accurately. Many students rush through observations or make careless measurement errors that undermine their experiments. Tutors help students slow down, develop careful observation habits, and learn to distinguish between what they actually observe versus what they interpret. These skills—precision, attention to detail, and honest data collection—are foundational for all future science work and build confidence in hands-on learning.

Earth and space science requires students to think at scales they can't directly experience—from the layers miles below the surface to planets millions of miles away. Students also struggle because these topics involve systems and processes that happen over long time periods or are invisible (like convection currents or the water cycle). A tutor can use models, diagrams, and step-by-step explanations to make these scales and processes concrete. Breaking topics like weather patterns or the rock cycle into smaller, connected pieces helps students see the "why" behind what they're learning rather than just memorizing facts.

Many fifth graders memorize "producers, consumers, decomposers" without understanding how energy actually flows through an ecosystem or why removing one organism matters. Tutors help students build food webs from the ground up, tracing energy and showing how each organism depends on others—making the relationships visible and logical rather than abstract. Using local examples (like the ecosystem in their own backyard or a nearby pond) makes these concepts relevant and memorable. When students grasp that ecosystems are interconnected systems, they develop better intuition for environmental science topics they'll encounter in later grades.

Force and motion feel abstract to many fifth graders because they're trying to apply invisible concepts to everyday situations. Tutors use simple experiments—rolling balls down ramps, testing how friction affects motion, or exploring how different forces change an object's movement—so students see the principles in action. Connecting to real-world examples (like why seatbelts matter when a car stops suddenly, or how a soccer player kicks a ball) helps students build intuition before tackling more formal definitions. When students experience force and motion firsthand, they understand Newton's laws as descriptions of what they've observed, not just rules to memorize.

Fifth graders often forget science facts quickly because they've memorized them without building deep understanding. Tutors use retrieval practice—asking students to explain concepts in their own words, apply them to new situations, and revisit topics over time rather than cramming before a test. Creating visual study guides, making connections between related topics (like linking the water cycle to weather patterns), and regularly reviewing material helps cement learning. When students understand the "why" behind concepts and practice retrieving that knowledge repeatedly, they retain information far longer than if they'd simply studied for a test.
