I come from a family of teachers. My mom, my grandad, my grandma and all their siblings are all professors and teachers. I have realized that aside from engineering, I love to share my knowledge. I love students who are willing to learn and do their best.

I'll admit it: I love history. How much do I love it? Well, sure, I've been a History/English teacher for almost 20 years -- but I wasn't born that way! I grew up in California and my previous career was in both the music and film industries. This gives me the ability to teach while integrating pop culture, movies, TV, music (and maybe even humor?), making the subject matter a LOT more accessible, understandable and yes, in some cases, even enjoyable!I've been teaching all levels of history/social studies for over 20 years (middle and high school), as well as teaching AP-level US, World and European History, test prep, and I've even served as Department Chair for History at two schools. In addition to history I am also experienced in teaching Civics/Government, Economics, Human Geography and Psychology. If it's in the Social Sciences, I've taught it.My goal as a teacher/tutor is to show students that history isn't just made up of "dates" and "dead people," but actual STORIES that connect where we are today to where we came from. History CAN be fun and interesting -- if you learn it the right way!

I have been involved in education for over 15 years, first in outdoor education in California, teaching science through hands-on experiences like snorkeling, kayaking and hiking. In addition, I had the chance to travel as an international expedition guide in Central American and Africa with high school students, with a focus on history, anthropology, writing, and sociology. Five years ago I became a middle school classroom teacher in San Francisco, CA, specializing in English and history. I spent the last two years teaching overseas in Lisbon, Portugal, working with diverse students from around the world.My teaching credentials in both elementary education, and secondary English and Social Sciences, coupled with my enthusiasm and dedication for working with young people, make me a very understanding, flexible and reliable tutor. I graduated from Centenary College in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in education and mathematics and I also have a masters from Montclair State University in Exercise Science & Physical Education with a concentration in Sports Administration & Coaching. I have been teaching middle school mathematics for the past 9+ years and I specialize in basic math, elementary math, pre-algebra, algebra 1 & geometry. In addition, I also specialize in test prep, school entrance exams, basic college math and Praxis Prep forK-8 math certification. I have written features and news for several publications (Google my name for published work) - I have been with Varsity Tutors for two years, with the privilege of working with more than two dozen students in areas of reading, grammar, writing, spelling and ACT English. I am experienced with GED test prep, adult learners, and ADHD. I am sensitive to students with general anxiety and transitional situations - I am very outgoing, patient and fun and make lasting connections with my students. I currently tutor grades Pre K through Adult Learners.

I recently graduated from Florida International University with my Bachelors in Biomedical Engineering. Throughout my college life, I have seen college students looking from help in different courses. After my freshman year in college, I realized that I have the potential to help students. Then I decided to start tutoring college students who were struggling in Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. Once I started noticing that my tutoring improved the students' academic performances, it kept me motivated to continue tutoring since I was able to make a change in the students' academic life.

I'm Akir! I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and minor in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh. I started my collegiate career with the intent to be a nurse as I enjoy helping people, but it didn't take long for me to realize studying the material brought me more joy than trying to cure patients, as sometimes that's an impossible task. It was because of my challenging courses in nursing that I decided to delve deeply into understanding the mind and how we learn. By way of my peers and professors suggestions I began to research different learning styles and concluded if we gave children the opportunity to learn more creatively and privately their understanding of the fundamentals in any subject would increase. This is just some of the knowledge I bring to my sessions. I use each session as an opportunity to uniquely tailor the subject to the student as a way to reinforce what they already know.
