Washtenaw County, Michigan, was originally founded in 1822 and organized itself as a county in 1826. Ann Arbor is the county seat, and it contains the Ann Arbor Metropolitan Statistical Area. The earliest recordings of activity in the area come from trade conducted by French traders. These French traders established the first permanent settlement in the county in 1809. The name "Washtenaw" is derived from the Ojibwe phrase "Wash-ten-ong," which means, "far away waters."
Many students in the county attend one of Ann Arbor's secondary institutions (which include Skyline High School and Huron High School), which are mostly administered by the Ann Arbor Public Schools District. Students may also attend schools such as Arbor Preparatory High School or Washtenaw International High School in Ypsilanti.
