I attended the University of Detroit Mercy where I gained a Bachelor of Science in Biology. I have also recently graduated with a Masters of Basic Medical Sciences from Wayne State University. As you may be able to tell, I have had a passion for science, especially biology, for many years. My academic journey has given me an immense amount of experience with a wide range of subjects and tests. I know very intimately what it is like to be under pressure to perform well in school and on tests and therefore can relate to students under similar circumstances. I have had the opportunity to tutor many people in a wide range of ages and academic abilities in the past.I tutor a wide range of subjects but am most passionate about Math, Science, Reading, Writing, and Test Preparation. I believe the first and most vital step in working with a student is to identify specifically where he or she is struggling. Every student is different and deserves a teaching method that is tailored to them. I believe students learn best when they are guided along through discussion and hands-on methods as opposed to when they are lectured to; I also believe learning can and should be fun! When it comes to preparing for tests, I believe that what you know is only a small part of the puzzle; perfecting test-taking skills is equally important. I have taken many standardized tests throughout my life, and have been able to do well by understanding the tests and utilizing these skills.When I have spare time, I enjoy staying active by playing basketball and exercising. As a first generation student, I was always taught that knowledge is power. The first priority in our life would be education because it would be what freed us from the confines of what previous generations endured. I am committed to fostering that intellect, individuality, and excitement that students deserve when it comes to pursuing their goals. I understand the road blocks, the exhaustion, the frustrations, and I want to do my best to make those disappear.I was bullied in school for my brown skin and embarrassed by teachers for not speaking English at home. It turns out that ethics and judgement are skewed when attending school in a city ranked, “one of the whitest in America.” Those learning environments were privileged, and yet personally unapproachable and uninspiring due to the stereotypes surrounding my ethnicity. If it was not language it was appearance. If not appearance, it was my cultural or religious beliefs. I learned I would need to fight to foster my individuality and intellect. There was always something that didn’t sit right with my peers and I knew I was not alone. I had many family and friends who experienced the same marginalization. We promised ourselves that we wouldn’t let the burden of these prejudices distract us from reaching our goals. Today, whether in academic or professional settings, I speak out on instances of discrimination and injustice. It is because I have embraced my identity that I use such instances as a moment to teach, spread mindfulness, and engage in my community to stifle the divisions we've sought to end for centuriesThis is why I believe knowledge is power. We are working together to bring all students up to speed in a educational system that does not work to do that on its own. Despite this being the case, I know that we can work together to garner your individual potential to not only work closely and successfully amid your peers but to ignite confidence and leadership in academic and professional settings to come!

Hi everyone! My name is Regan, I just graduated from law school where I earned dean's list and excelled academically graduating in the top 10% of my class. Before law school, I played college softball while I earned my MBA. I have a passion for academics as well as athletics. Education has always been very important to me. I earned my BA in English from University of Detroit, MA in Publication and Media Design from University of Baltimore, and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center. I'm currently pursuing a second BA in Computer Science at Florida State University. I am a former Air Force Communications-Computer Systems Operations officer. I love math and enjoy helping others understand it. I've tutored reading and junior high math in the past and I've taught software classes. While some math concepts are just a matter of memorization, I like to help students understand the WHY. When you understand why, the learning begins and you'll hopefully never forget. When I'm not being an academic, I enjoy programming (Java and Android), playing guitar, singing, traveling, going to the movies, and being with friends and family.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Spanish and minors in French and English. My Master's Degree was in Spanish Bi-lingual, Bi-cultural Education. I have a teaching certificate and according to the state of Michigan standards, I am "highly qualified" to teach Spanish, French and ESL k-12. I have taught students from kindergarten through the university level. In addition to working in public and private schools, I have taught language classes at the community college and university level as an adjunct instructor. One great part of my job is to help students who think that learning a foreign language is IMPOSSIBLE discover how easy it can be when they understand language patterns, have the right tools, and the right guidance!

I am a recent graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English with a focus on literature and History. I also minored in Museum Studies. Since graduation, I have been working as substitute teacher in the Detroit area. Subbing has been a fantastic learning opportunity for me and has taught me much about becoming a better teacher. While I am comfortable tutoring in many different subjects, my primary passion has always been for History, English, and Literature. I find the most effective tutoring style is to break down the problem into its simplest parts and then build it back up in a more easily understandable way. I have always loved both History and English, and I always try to find a way to make these subjects as interesting and fun as possible.

Active learning should be a lifelong process. I have loved school, reading, research, writing, analysis -- everything about learning -- since I was very young. I have two post-secondary degrees and am likely to seek at least one more because the process of learning is so cool.Active learning should also be individual because we are all the result of different families, communities, interests, and goals. I have "learned" something years after first attempting it because I was at a different point in my life or the material was presented differently when it clicked.I want to help those who need assistance actively "learn," not memorize material. My enthusiasm, ferocious curiosity and readiness for a new challenge make me well-suited to do it.

I was born in metro-Detroit and spent much of my childhood in a rural north-central Kansas before returning to the Detroit area for high school.I graduated from University of Detroit Mercy with a biology degree and a minor in English literature. In college, I tutored biology, general chemistry and English and worked for three years as a teaching assistant helping students with biology, anatomy and physiology. It was through these experiences that I found I was passionate about teaching, and through my English coursework I found I was passionate about research.Upon graduation, I worked in clinical research in a private rheumatology practice, where my team worked on ground-breaking clinical drug trials and ultimately delivered new, efficacious therapies to patients suffering with rheumatic disease.Today, I work in research in complex congenital heart disease and pediatric cardiac surgery at C.S Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. My job involves applying the scientific knowledge gained in the classroom toward discovering new ways to improve clinical outcomes for children who have had congenital heart surgery. I will be applying to medical school in summer 2021.I'm passionate about the subjects I teach. I've witnessed how the lessons learned in the classroom can be transformative to your life and the lives of others. To reverence Rudolf Steiner, I believe that education is the fount at which students drink to bring meaning and purpose to their livesIn my experience as a Waldorf teacher for 20 years, I was enriched journeying with students toward such meaning and purpose. One of my students, now a lifelong friend, nominated me for inclusion in the teachers version of 'Who's Who'. I have continued journeying with students as a tutor over the last five years.I attended Waldorf teacher traning at the University of Detroit Mercy. I completed the program and received my certification in 1995While a Waldorf teacher, I invented and received a patent for a math calculating and teaching device. Math emerged as my favorite subject to teach. I am adept at using hands-on and imaginative tools to support student success. I get excited teaching math from counting to college algebra.When I am not teaching, I work on a novel I am writing in the science fantasy genre. I am also involved in some community organizing efforts.

Every student searching for a tutor has a goal. It is my job (and my pleasure!) to help the student reach that goal efficiently and effectively. I love to work with a student and see the light bulb go on, and hear them say "That's easy!" The outcome of our tutoring sessions should be that the student attain a level of confidence that his/her goal will be achieved. While I do have the educational background in my tutoring subject areas, what is most important for the student is that the subject be explained clearly in relation to the student's desired outcome.
