My approach is student-centered, focusing on building confidence through tailored explanations and engaging activities. I believe that every student can succeed with the right guidance and encouragement, and I am excited to be a part of their academic journey. I am very excited to be a part of Varsity Tutors because it is my belief that everyone has the capability to succeed in school, even if they need a little extra help to get there. Quality education is absolutely essential in making sure a child is prepared for their future career. I love working with students and seeing them triumph over areas they were once struggling with.
Hi! My name is Sanjana. I graduated from Michigan State University in 2023 with a degree in Human Biology. I have been tutoring students in my neighborhood and through the Varsity Tutors platform for the past 4 years, covering a range of subjects from elementary to high school, with a focus on math. I also have experience tutoring for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT, and I specialize in STEM subjects such as chemistry and biology. I love teaching and strive to be creative in my methods to ensure that each student understands the concepts in the best way possible. One approach I often use is incorporating real-world examples, which helps students see how the material applies to everyday life. When it comes to elementary reading and writing, I aim to make the content engaging and tailored to each student's interests, helping them become more motivated to read and write.
I am an experienced math, physics, and computer programming tutor. I have my Masters in Astrophysics with Bachelors in both Physics and Computer Science. I am passionate about helping students master these complex subjects by emphasizing real-world applications. If you've ever asked why you needed to learn math, I'm the guy to ask! Additionally I can offer guidance for standardized testing at the graduate level. When I'm not tutoring, I am either playing music (guitar and drums) or taking my cats outside to smell the plants.
Hello, my name is Shobhna and I am an incoming freshman at Michigan State University! I started tutoring elementary kids in my neighborhood by helping them understand the basics of Math and English. Further exposure to tutoring was through my high school's National Honors Society chapter (NHS). Our chapter's mission was to provide underprivileged members of society care packages with medical and hygiene supplies at homeless shelters and tutor students who had minimal access to academic help outside school. In NHS, I tutored kids in Math, English, Chemistry, and Spanish 1. Not only did I enjoy teaching these subjects, but I also completed these classes with High Honors. Since graduating high school, I'm further motivated to minimize the disparities in education among disadvantaged communities. To add, I want to be able to tutor individuals from various backgrounds to minimize the academic difficulties that students including myself face. As a student who struggled with seeking additional resources when I found lessons in school hard, becoming a tutor allows me to help other students by connecting with them and learning the best ways they learn. With that in mind, I can structure the best method to shape complex lessons into simpler explanations to make it easier for the student to understand and allow them to apply their knowledge to excel in class. Together we can learn in the best way possible!
I am a tutor very excited to work with you to learn how to help you best. I feel education is very important and very fun when you are being understood as a student. My goal is to help you learn while also creating long lasting resources for you to use.
I graduated with honors from Michigan State University in 2006, receiving a BA in History with cognates in Math and Physics. I had the opportunity to travel extensively through western Europe as an undergraduate student, and I participated in a semester-long study abroad program in the United Kingdom. These experiences led me to pursue graduate studies abroad in Ireland, and I received my MA in History from University College, Cork in 2007. While preparing my applications to doctoral programs in the U.S. and Canada, I had the opportunity to work as a long-term substitute teacher, teaching Algebra at an alternative high school in Flint, MI. In the summer of 2008 I was asked by the same high school to stay on for their summer school program, where I taught 6-8th grade math. I took up a graduate scholarship with the Department of History at the University of Toronto the next autumn. I passed my comprehensive exams on schedule in May of 2010, and began the long, arduous, but rewarding process of researching for my dissertation. I have taught at both the secondary and college levels, and I have taught a variety of subjects and skills from math to history, and from critical reading and writing to the basics of footnoting and compiling bibliographies . These teaching opportunities have provided me with considerable experience in planning, organizing and presenting educational programming. They have also given me the opportunity to guide, and to work closely with young scholars and learners from a variety of backgrounds. I firmly believe that the importance of education as well as the key to a successful academic career is the ability to learn 'how to learn'. In other words, rather than simply memorizing and demonstrating content, I believe that recognizing and mastering one's own unique process(es) of learning is the most important outcome of learning. For this reason, I try not only to present learning as a challenging but fun exercise, but also as an exploration of each student's strengths, interests and capabilities. Apart from my continued fascination with all things 'history', I enjoy reading (especially satire), traveling (especially on trains), and watching (but never performing!) stand-up comedy.
As a former music teacher and missionary to Zambia, Africa, where I did 8 years of homeschool teaching, I am looking forward to the opportunity of helping students from all over grow in their understanding in whatever subject area they need assistance in. I have worked with teens for more than 20 years and have been countless relationships. My nickname amongst the youth I worked with in Zambia was Brad-Dad. I love the value and purpose behind that name.

My passion is rooted in writing education, specifically for high school juniors and seniors as well as first-year college students. My teaching philosophy is student-centered and encourages student writers to focus on what makes their writing unique to them. Working one-on-one with students, we search for the "why" in writing assignments and try to understand the purpose of instruction, both in and out of school. This understanding improves comprehension skills and overall writing habits.
As a graduate with a Bachelor's in Biochemistry and Biotechnology from Michigan State University, I have over 5 years of tutoring experience in high school science, particularly in organic chemistry, biochemistry, and general chemistry. My passion for teaching stems from a desire to help students grasp complex concepts by connecting them to real-world applications. I believe in a tailored approach, assessing each student's understanding through their notes and homework, and fostering critical thinking by encouraging them to work through problems independently. I strive to create a supportive learning environment where students can visualize and understand intricate biological and chemical pathways. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy exploring scientific literature and engaging in collaborative study sessions, which enhance my own understanding and that of my peers.

I am a licensed high school math teacher with 10 years of classroom experience teaching students who struggle, or dislike math, how to succeed at Algebra and Geometry. In 2003, I completed my Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at Michigan State University. I wrote my dissertation about the math-learning experiences of high school students who were unsuccessful in math as middle-schoolers; the goal of my study was to understand what would make these students' math-learning experiences successful -- which is my goal, when teaching and tutoring! I take great satisfaction in helping make seemingly complex concepts easy for students to grasp. I want my students to truly *understand* what they're doing, rather than just going through the motions. I enjoy working one-on-one with students and helping them realize that they *can* succeed at math! My teaching philosophy in a nutshell: Math is not a spectator sport; the only way to learn math is to do math!
I am committed to helping students learn and succeed in math. Learning is a lifetime journey - and you're never too old to embark on a new chapter. Take up painting for fun, a martial art, read a book in a subject you never thought you might be interested. Above all, remember to keep yourself exploring new and different latitudes.
I am a graduate of Michigan State University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with minors in Biology and History. As a classroom teacher, I taught grades 5-8 with an emphasis in the Sciences. As a tutor, I love that I have the chance to give a student the undivided attention that they are often unable to receive in a busy classroom. My goal as a tutor is to help students take ownership over their own learning and to become more resilient learners.
I discovered the joy of teaching and helping others when I was in school and working with classmates on the same material. I've found that the material is only part of the learning process. Attending the same classes allowed me to understand the classroom context and help classmates navigate confusing lessons as well as homework and exams. I have successfully taken on this role from elementary to graduate school. Most of the time I did not have an official position as a tutor, but I greatly enjoyed being in an optimal position to set up others for success.I most enjoy math, probability, and statistics because they give you tools that allow you to solve technical problems all by yourself. For example, I build a tool in Excel to give me the odds that I would get a desired card from a card pool in the online card game called Hearthstone. I graduated Michigan State with a bachelor's in statistics and a Master's in Business Analytics to learn how to apply statistics to real world problems.I have had almost all A's throughout my entire academic career. I attribute my success to more than natural ability. I've found that being willing to ask questions to classmates and teachers, putting more time and effort into subjects and lessons that are most challenging, treating each class/teacher as a separate challenge, and breaking down processes are all incredibly important. I think of a new class as a separate game that needs to be understood and respected. Having this flexibility will enable you to take the key steps that will optimize your performance. When I consider artistic performance such as my piano playing and dancing, I see how breaking it down is helpful in a similar way. I have to spend most of the time working on the hard parts and then integrating them into the rest of the piece. In school, the performance could be solving an algebraic equation. There could be an element like factoring that is hard and open ended. Putting the most time and effort into factoring and then successfully working through the whole problem is just like perfect practice leading to a flawless performance.

I did my undergraduate studies at Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. I received my MBA in Healthcare administration at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, MI. I have been involved in tutoring since MSU, where I held a teaching assistant position in the Foreign Language department. In more recent years, I have been working with the Big Brother/Big Sister program, tutoring students within the elementary and middle school age groups. My background in psychology gives me a greater appreciation for the various teaching techniques. Everyone learns differently and whether I am tutoring 5th grade math, psychology, or a foreign language, it is important to adapt to the student's unique way of learning, some of which may be unconventional.I grew up on two different continents (North America and Africa) which has given me very rich and diverse cultural awareness. I enjoy traveling the world and have spent time in places like Japan, Spain, Switzerland and Costa Rica.
I am a lifelong learner, and I hope to share that mindset while tutoring. I believe that any subject can be interesting as long as your approach it with an open, optimistic mind.
Michigan State University, College of Engineering.Sophomore working towards BS in Electrical Engineering.Tutoring experience mostly with High School students.I tutor Mathematics and ACT/SAT prep. Favorite subject to tutor is Calculus. My favorite teaching philosophy comes from Socrates' question-based education. My non-academic interests are gaming and forest exploration.
I've always loved school and learning. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the idea that anyone can learn anything, so long as the instructor is willing to teach to the student's style of learning. Most subjects came easily to me, but I hit a wall with math in middle school and just never seemed to be able to get it to 'click.' Then, I had a very patient teacher who helped me figure out how I could learn math, and it was like the wall crashed down. I would love to see every teacher have to teach his or her worst subject for a couple of years, in order to figure out how to become a better instructor.
