I've been passionate about the English language for my entire life. The seeds were planted, with the help of Thomas the Tank Engine, while I sat in my mom's lap. My dad's languorous voice reciting his poetry provided constant nutrition while my parents' help in editing my essays was the trellis. I came into my own throughout college, blooming from the start until the final period on my honors thesis. My capacity for reading and writing make me an excellent tutor for all things English. I've won essay contests and published the previously alluded to honors thesis. I graduated with distinction in my major and a GPA above 3.8 from a rigorous school: Whitman College. I took courses in tutoring writing and have taught numerous students in the past. I am an exceptional editor; talented at complimenting and fostering strengths while maintaining a sharp eye for mistakes and opportunities for improvement. I can help take a poor piece of writing and make it good. But where I truly excel is in my ability to take decent writing and make it powerful. I know how to wield syntax and descriptive language such that a piece becomes succinct and clear. This enables the author to get their point across exactly as they intend, and to do it succinctly enough to hold the reader's undivided attention. This sort of writing does the work for the reader, bringing them exactly where the author wants them to go. The reader would likely not be able to put their finger on it, but it is this level of behind the scenes writing mechanics that makes a piece truly great. This knowledge was hard earned. In the arduous process of learning I discovered and was taught many techniques that helped me along the way, and that I am now able to pass along to students of my own. And writing ability cannot be attained without the accompaniment of reading. My writing first developed out of my strength at reading comprehension and ability to critically pick apart a text. This too is a skill I know how to foster in students. And for the cherry on top, in the reading and writing sections of both the SAT and ACT I received a perfect score.I am experienced and talented at meeting students where they are at, and communicating with them in the way they need in order to develop into skilled users of language. My assistance as your tutor will be invaluable.

I like to joke that really I am a professional whitewater kayaker, and physics is just my hobby. However, I received my PhD in Theoretical Physics from Colorado State University in May of 2014. While at CSU, I spent about eight years as a TA which is far more time than most grad students spend teaching. During that time, I really started to enjoy teaching especially one-on-one and in small groups. I like to focus not just on what the answer to a question is, but rather on the process that leads to that answer. I feel that a tutor should play a role similar to a coach or weightlifting spotter; I am not there to do the heavy lifting but rather to guide students so that their efforts are applied in the right direction. Also physics is just awesome, and to borrow a little kayaking lingo, I like to share the stoke.

I am a Grad Student studying to become a middle school Earth Science teacher in Richmond, Virginia. I graduated from Whitman College in 2016 and relocated to Richmond in 2018 to work in a print shop. I've loved being an artist, but I've always wanted to teach Special Ed and Earth Science. I am currently pursuing a masters in teaching to be placed in Title 1 schools and plan to pursue a dual certification in Special Ed.I think science is the coolest but it is also very tough, I experienced plenty of my own academic struggles in my journey towards becoming a science teacher. I am thrilled to work with any student towards making science more approachable.

I consider myself pretty intelligent - not in an upturned-nose kind of way - but in a driven-by-curiosity sense. Thus, I firmly believe in collaboration, because I get immense gratification when I learn something new, and I want to share that feeling with other people. I am also pretty easy-going and empathetic; I like to tell jokes and try to please people around me, so if I am your tutor you can bet that I will do my best to cater to your needs and strengths. I think the best model for tutoring is for me to help you figure out how to work through problems rather than just giving you the answer. If you take a look at my interest and hobbies, you can see that my curious drive is not limited to my academics - far from it! I am fascinated with the idea of being a Renaissance Man - a polymath basically - so I am always pushing myself to learn new things and try adventurous experiences. This might mean spending hours learning how to build a portable solar-powered generator or going hitchhiking in central Europe!

Originally from Marin County, CA, I recently graduated from Whitman College, where I received my degree in astrophysics with a minor in Japanese. I’ve always gravitated towards math and came to appreciate it as a language all of its own. Awareness of math as an invaluable tool came to me later, after I’d developed a strong interest in physicsand astronomy, fields that rely on math heavily. I’ve also taken the time to nurture my passion for the Japanese language and culture. During college, I spent two semesters in Kyoto, Japan, where I participated in an intensive language and emersion program.During my undergraduate years I tutored students for three semesters and saw how I could gently encourage making the subject “one’s own” in a friendly, supportive way. I’m patient and flexible when it comes to changing my approach based on a student’s particular learning needs. Rather than simply showing my method for solutions, I make note of how students tackle problems, and their thinking gives me guidance concerning strategies that will improve on their own methods. I enjoy the challenge of finding novel ways to help students make learning easier. Illustrating how these subjects can be fascinating and relevant out in the real world can help ignite interest in a struggling learner. In my spare time I like to play piano, go on hikes, and shoot hoops with friends.

I spent my undergraduate years at Whitman College, where I focused on dramatic literature. I also have an MA in history from Portland State University, which I used as a stepping stone into a PhD program at the University of Durham in the United Kingdom. A few years after I obtained my doctorate in early modern history, I went through the teacher training program at Lewis and Clark College and earned an MA in teaching.I am passionate about teaching the humanities, especially history, psychology and literature. I am equally passionate about teaching the skills each of these disciplines requires for mastery: critical thinking; reading and comprehension strategies; academic writing and effective research methods. My areas of expertise include American and European history (as well as historiography). I specialize in political and military history, and my interests touch upon issues such as conflict and warfare, colonialism, technology, social psychology and religion. I have taught a wide range of subjects, including British history, Reformation history and Western Civilization at the college level. My secondary education teaching experience includes AP European history, AP Psychology, AP US history, government, economics, global history and 9th-grade history for English Language Learners.I am also fluent in Latin, both medieval and classical, and because of that, I was able to learn French very quickly. I have tutored Latin to both college and high school students, and I have taught French to first year students as well as AP students.I believe that learning is an idiosyncratic process, and I believe every person has the right to an education that complements their individual needs. As such, I try to see my students as a whole picture, so I can cater to their strengths while helping them where they might struggle. With new students, I assess their initial basic knowledge so that together we can map where each student needs to go. This approach results in a plan that caters to each student's distinctive learning style. When not teaching, I love to get out of the city and into the outdoors. You can often find me camping in the mountains, fishing the lakes of the central Oregon Cascades or hiking the trails of the Columbia River Gorge. The city dweller in me does like the occasional day in town, whether its perusing book stores or seeing live music.
