Hi! I'm Patrick, and I've been teaching and tutoring chemistry and science for over 13 years, including Honors Chemistry at Stuyvesant High School in NYC. While at Wesleyan, I also worked as an ESL instructor, tutoring a Moroccan immigrant and helping him to gain citizenship and employment. Education has given me the opportunity to find what I am passionate about, and I hope to help others gain that same opportunity through tutoring. I worked throughout college as a music director at Wesleyan's radio station, and currently work as a producer and staff writer for Afropop Worldwide, a non-profit radio show dedicated to African music and music of the African diaspora. I also love watching independent films and reading fiction and philosophy. I love living in Brooklyn, but I enjoy leaving the city to go hiking, and I bike throughout the city as much as possible.

I received a BA in English Literature from Wesleyan University, a small liberal arts college in Middletown, CT. After earning my degree last May, I moved to Pittsburgh in September to do a year of volunteer service work for a local nonprofit. My approach to teaching and tutoring centers around my background as a liberal arts student turned pre-med. Fourteen years ago, I accidentally became a teacher and fell in love with the work. Since that time, I've worked with just about every age group and helped all kinds of people to read, write, hear, and speak English. More recently, I've made a switch to teaching pre-schoolers, which means that now I'm also helping people learn to count, sing, breathe deeply, hold a pencil, treat others kindly, and all sorts of other new things.If I had to summarize what I've learned so far from all of these teaching experiences, I'd boil it down to this: A good attitude accounts for at least 75% of learning. If you feel you can learn it, and you're not afraid of making some mistakes along the way, then you will ultimately learn it. Whom I have encountered regrettably often, however, are students who don't feel that way. So a major part of my work is not only to make the learning easier, but also to demonstrate to a student how far he or she has already progressed along the journey. It's easy to see where we need improvement; ironically, it can be much harder to be able to take stock of our success. But the balance is critical—sometimes I feel that if I can just help a person improve their self-confidence, then the rest will practically take care of itself.As far as my own motivation is concerned, it's as simple as this: I like people, and I like getting to know what makes them tick. To me, teaching is no more or less than a process of getting to know somebody, as mediated by whatever learning goals are before us. If I can help you gain a skill or attain to an achievement, it's because I learned enough about how you think and work to help guide you there. From October 2009 through August 2014, I worked as a tutor (20+ hours per week) with a highly respected tutoring company. I tutored students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math. I also prepared students for the SAT and ISEE. In September 2013, I started my own business doing private tutoring. I have continued to work with students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math, and I have continued to prepare students for the SAT and ISEE. In general, about half of my students are doing test preparation and half are getting some kind of help with school. At the tutoring center where I worked, we had a number of students who were being tutored in order to become very advanced in their studies at school and to gain admission to highly selective colleges by getting top-notch scores on their SAT. We also had students who were struggling to do well in their classes and therefore needed help with their homework and with understanding the material they were learning in school. I worked successfully with both kinds of students. My approach to tutoring is definitely gentle, but also firm in terms of expecting my students to work hard during the tutoring sessions and to work diligently on any homework I might assign. I am sensitive to the learning styles of my students and do everything I can to communicate in a way that makes sense to them. I often make use of visuals and manipulatives in teaching various concepts. My goal is to enable students to really understand the material they are studying. I am happy to use whatever school or other materials that parents and/or students would like. I am also prepared to suggest additional materials that might be helpful for a particular student in a specific subject area. I am familiar with a number of very helpful resources. Before working at the tutoring center, I was actively involved in the homeschooling community. I homeschooled my older two children through high school and my younger two children through 8th grade. I also taught enrichment classes in the areas of math, science, music, and art to students of all ages in a homeschool co-op, for a total of eight years.

I first began tutoring as part of Wesleyan's Writing Workshop where I helped students on a range of assignments, from small academic papers to a PhD dissertation in ethnomusicology. Whether for standardized tests or academic subjects, I look forward to helping you or someone you care about reach their potential.For my own academic history, I scored in the 99th percentile on all three sections of the SAT, as well as attaining a score of 5 on the AP Statistics, US Government, US History, and English Literature and Composition exams. I completed my BA in Government in December after having served as a Research Apprentice with the Quantitative Analysis Center, and my thesis utilizing a range of novel econometrics to isolate the effect of public financing of elections on legislator ideology has been awarded Honors.

I am a rising senior at Wesleyan University double majoring in government and music, with a minor in creative writing. I have years of experience teaching and tutoring writing and music both individually and in groups. I work as the editor-in-chief of The Wesleyan Argus at school, which has given me much experience editing and working with writers. I also often teach individual piano lessons and theory during breaks.
