Growing up in one-stoplight town, I spent a lot of time reading. This blossomed into a fascination with history which has led me to travel around the US and Europe. My love of helping people learn began early as well, with teaching swim lessons in the local pool. I attended college at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. Surprising, I majored in history and not vampire studies. I worked at a software company, where one of my duties was to train new employees, before moving to England to pursue a Masters Degree in Modern History Durham University. When not in the classroom, I love hiking, swimming, reading, and playing video games. From my pre-school to my Master's degree, I've found tutors and teachers who helped shape a love of learning in me. Drawing on my own experience, I believe making connections between subjects and personal interests is key to instilling excitement in any topic. Helping students form these connections develops a desire to learn which often lasts beyond succeeding in a single class.I am happy to assist with a wide variety of subjects from ACT prep to general homework assistance for any age student. My experiences with children outside the classroom as a swim coach and assistant scoutmaster has reinforced my belief that teaching requires positivity, patience, and enthusiasm to achieve success.Successful learning in a tutoring session needs a good tutor-student relationship, and forming this bond is also a vital part of the teaching process. This allows me to personally challenge and motivate students so they take ownership in their studies. Having struggled with a learning disability of my own, I know there is no single way to learn, and believe adapting teaching methods to fit the individual student is crucial.

As a 2015 graduate of Transylvania University where I received a Bachelor of Arts in English, I've set my day job goals on working in the legal field but in the evenings and weekends I write and read to keep myself in tip-top literary shape. I want to help students because I've watched my younger sister (by 8 years) struggle with English her whole life while I excelled at it. She always really appreciated that I was willing to take the time and have the patience to help her improve and finish tough assignments, and she is the one who inspires me to tutor today. I take this role seriously and would like to guide any student needing English or literary aid toward success, however that may be defined in each situation. When I'm not absorbed in my work or literature, I enjoy exercising, learning piano, consuming lots of cheese in my vegetarian lifestyle, and chattering at my significant other who acknowledges when he is not listening.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Transylvania University. For over 15 years, I have helped family and friends with various math courses ranging from elementary school, middle school, high school, and some college. I find math tremendously fun and interesting, and I have a passion for creating a genuine understanding and a fun experience when a student is learning math. Not everyone is going to love math, but it need not be scary or overwhelming. It can even be fun! Meeting the students where they are, building from there, and teaching according to their own learning styles has proven vitally important to success and building confidence. When a student starts to understand what has previously been difficult, there is such a sense of pride and accomplishment! Whether a sudden moment of understanding or a more gradual gaining of comprehension, that "Got it!" moment is something that I treasure every time. Currently, I homeschool my own children in all subjects, and I teach classes through our homeschool co-op.

In my opinion, the number one thing America can do to be the premier country in the world is to provide the absolute best education available. I want to do my part to pitch in and help. What does this mean for you? I am motivated to help you!I attended a very challenging undergraduate program and now I am in a competitive graduate school program. I have always had an interest in learning. Whether it is new skills or new concepts, I am both fascinated by and curious about the world around me. After graduating from high school, I attended Transylvania University (a small liberal arts college in Lexington, KY) and graduated in the spring of 2014. While there I completed my Biochemistry major, but also took a number of classes in Psychology, Classical Latin, and other corresponding classes. My primary interest was to pursue a career in food science with respect to food product research and development. As a student, I worked as a chemical researcher on food dye in children's food products, maturation of bourbon, and later the aromatics of wine. Part of these research was completed in New Zealand- a country I fell madly in love with. After graduation, I moved to New Zealand on a full tuition scholarship to culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu. After the completion of my culinary schooling, I moved back stateside to Philadelphia. I currently work as a full time pastry chef, but still enjoy engaging in the academic community. I tutored math and science for two years in college and have always found myself in mentoring positions. I find immense fulfillment in helping others understand difficult concepts, and feel as though my patient and creative personality truly helps people feel comfortable while struggling through new material. As a tutor, I value the advantage of being able to work with a student one on one. A teacher is bound to time limits and must divide their attention to a number of students. By getting to spend quality time digging into information with a student, it is easier to understand what areas the student is struggling with and how to best help them achieve their goals.
