Here is a little bit on my background: I was born in Seattle, Washington. I am the sixth of nine children born to John and Norma Michels. I graduated from Seattle Preparatory High School and attended Seattle University's German program in Graz, Austria and Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, and it was from Gonzaga where I earned my B.A. degree in English. I completed my M.A. in Literature from American University in Washington DC while assigned to military duty at Arlington National Cemetery. My master's thesis analyzed the loss of innocence and redemption in several of Henry James' novels. I completed my Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at Gonzaga University. My doctoral dissertation explored William Faulkner's portrayal of leadership in his major novels.I began my professional career, following a three-year enlistment in the army, as an administrative assistant to the President of the Consortium of Universities in Washington, D.C. Later, I began a twenty-year career with Farmers Insurance Group as a claims representative before going into claims management and then marketing. Prior to teaching full-time, I also worked for Wells Fargo Financial.I have taught courses in composition, semantics, critical thinking, speech, Introduction to literature, American Literature, Ernest Hemingway, and William Faulkner at Mt. Hood Community College, Columbia College, Columbia Basin Community College, Globe University, and Kilian Community College. I was also an ESL instructor at Kilian College. I have taught Introduction to Claims and Underwriting, Property and Casualty Insurance, Sales Agency Management, Advertising, Supervisory Management, and Business Communications at Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls, and Speech, Business Communications, International Business Communications, and Writing at Colorado Technical University On-Line. I currently also teach writing at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD.I received the Army Commendation Medal and am a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit Honor Society. I am married to Pam and have seven children. I enjoy Italian Cooking, hiking, baseball history, and foreign cinema as well as 19th Century Russian Literature.

My name is Matthew Casino, and I am currently a Freshman at Gonzaga University studying Computer Engineering. With experience in both formal coursework and self directed studying, and professional experience as a full stack developer, I bring a well rounded perspective to my tutoring. I focus on a strong fundamental background, using problem based learning to create a strong understanding in core topics as well as building confidence in the ability to solve problems independently.

Learning should be fun and engaging, tied to real-world examples and explanations that not only illuminate the concept but also show the student why the information is important.I teach a variety of STEM topics, mostly focused around Computer Science, and I specifically focus on GRE preparation. There are a lot of tips and tricks you can use to maximize your score, as well as core concepts that can help you solve problems more easily. I have extensive experience with the GRE and with helping people get into grad school.

In 2013, I graduated from Gonzaga University with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and a minor in French with a focus on Geopolitical History. Since graduation, I have been enrolled in the JD/MBA program at Willamette University College of Law, as well as Willamette's Atkinson Graduate School of Management. I have always loved helping my teammates and classmates learn and understand any issue we happen upon, from French conjugation to the economic shortfalls of the former Soviet Union. I am deeply interested in History, Literature, and Politics. Upon the completion of my graduate work, I hope to earn a commission as a JAG officer in the Armed Forces. In high school, I was a 3 sport Varsity Athlete captaining my football team freshman and senior years, as well as being a wrestler and track runner. I played Rugby for Gonzaga during my undergraduate career, and many of my hobbies today involve athletics and the outdoors such as hiking and skiing.

I have been a teacher for over 15 years in the beautiful state of VA. I have taught several grades, from 2nd to 8th grade. I love to teach, and I think the best part is sharing my knowledge over a variety of subjects and making connections to previous experiences or existing background knowledge. I tutor in all subjects: math, history, science, and language arts - in grades K-8. I believe that teaching includes building interest and engagement with students. When they are interested in the topic, they are more willing to participate, ask questions, and ultimately master the content.

I studied economics and international business at Gonzaga University in Washington state, interned in South Africa and Washington D.C., was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic, and won a Fulbright grant to go to Mexico. I am about to begin an MBA program at Vanderbilt University.I recognize how fortunate I've been to have these opportunities, but I also know that they exist for anyone dedicated enough to pursue them.
