As a writer and English professor, helping people tap into the power of language is my passion. I have tutored students of all levels throughout my career, from high school students hoping to improve their essay writing skills to PhD candidates working on dissertations. In my own academic journey, I studied creative writing. I love bringing the sense of fun and freedom, along with many of the techniques and practices I learned in creative writing classrooms into my work with students.

Over the years, the biggest problem I faced like many of my own private clients have, is that sometimes students don't know what the instructor is expecting from them. This can occur in any classroom and at any level. Students may be referring to unknown expectations of a teacher or a professor about a particular quiz, exam, midterm, essay or even the primary goal of the academic year. My job is to guide each student towards identifying and achieving what the instructor is looking for, and ultimately comprehending those difficult demands. I try to bridge the gap between the student and teacher. My primary goal is to lead to clarity - not further any confusion, difficulty, or frustration. Learning a language is hard enough. I simply guide the student by showing him or her new techniques to study and methods to learn about the Spanish language. This is turn gives the student the ability to achieve his or her individual goals. Moreover, the previous tension and confusion felt by the student begins to lessen with each session. As a personal tutor I hope to advance the development of a student's initial knowledge of the Spanish language into a solid foundation.

I have 8 years of experience in education, with a variety of age groups ranging from elementary to higher education. I worked with the Colorado College Writing Center for four years and I am currently working in a high school teaching Career and College Counseling and writing courses.

In order to pursue my passion for learning, I chose to study philosophy during my time at Colorado College. Philosophy gave me the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in the wide variety of courses that made up my liberal arts education. Upon graduating, I used those skills to further pursue another passion of mine, rock climbing. I worked as a climbing guide, bringing people from all walks of life into my world and out of their comfort zones. I learned how to gently push people past their fears. I learned how to use a combination of encouragement and technical knowledge to help people reach their goals. I learned how to read people and find the roots of their struggles. Through this, I could discover the best way to approach each individual and create a plan of action that worked best for their unique needs. Through all of this, I learned of my passion for teaching. I went on to start tutoring students and combined both the critical thinking skills and technical knowledge from my degree in philosophy with the teaching skills that I learned from guiding climbing. I worked with students in a variety of subjects from math, to history, to writing. In every subject, I was able to help lead my students into developing their own critical thinking skills. I also encountered some of the same fear that I saw from people 100 feet up a rock face. I used my guiding experience to help one student overcome what had become a debilitating and illogical fear of math in order for her to pass a college placement test (which she had failed many times previously) so that she could go on to pursue her own passion of fashion design. Through all of my experiences, I have continued to pursue my passion for learning, and I hope to cultivate a similar passion in each of my students.

I am able to tutor for GRE preparation, instruct in grammar and usage in general, and guide students towards success in essay-writing. I received a Bachelor's Degree in Science from Colorado College in 2004, a Master of Arts Degree in Poetics from The New College of California in 2008, and am currently in progress towards a Master's in Literary Studies at Georgia State University. I have served as a Professor of English at Berkeley College, in New Jersey, where I taught classes in Composition and Response to Literature. I have also served as an Education Intern with the National Park Service's Education program at Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, where I led education programs for third-grade and sixth-grade students. I currently serve as a Substitute Teacher at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta. In my free time I enjoy writing poetry, running, hiking, and spending time with friends.I approach teaching through a student-centered philosophy--I listen to students' perspectives and help to guide them (using their starting point) toward successful strategies. I aim to make students aware of organizational processes and problem-solving strategies which they use currently, and suggest further strategies to effective writing and problem solving. A student that I tutor will gain not only an answer to the problem of the moment, but an awareness of processes and strategies which will help them to be successful in the future.

My passion for education was shown by ending my first year raising my school’s science achievement level by 250%, earning the highest state exam passing rate in the nine-year history of Astor Collegiate Academy, a college preparatory high school in the Bronx.Additionally, I have worked in one on one tutoring settings since I was of high school age. Beginning as a near peer tutor for gifted students, my abilities to communicate and educate have grown continuously. I have always enjoyed tutoring students one-on-one and look forward to continuing this now that I've moved to Atlanta. I have 15 years of experience as a teacher, at both the high school and college levels. I began as a French teacher and later branched out into English, ESL, history, and cultural studies. As an ESL teacher, I provided students with academic support in all subjects. I know that each student has a unique set of talents, experiences, and interests. My goal as a tutor is to help students draw on their strengths, build confidence, and develop skills. As a tutor, I have worked with a diverse range of students on essay writing, test preparation, and homework help.

I just moved back to my hometown of Tempe after a five-year hiatus, during which I attended Colorado College. This little-known school offers a strong liberal arts curriculum, which allowed me to develop my talents in everything from the upper-level sciences (General and Organic Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry) to English, Math (up to Calculus 2) and Spanish. My varied course of study gave me the chance to experience a wide range of subjects, yet it was Colorado College's location on the front range of the Rocky Mountains that fed my passion for the outdoors and eventually led me to a B.A. in Biology. I would love to tutor others to help them pursue a passion for the life sciences, especially if they are considering applying to dental school. I recently scored highly on the DAT (Dental Aptitude Test), which tests the same material as the MCAT, and feel I could prepare others as well for these difficult (and stressful!) tests.During my time at Colorado College I also had the amazing opportunity to study abroad in Costa Rica, where I was able to put nine years of Spanish education to practice. At Colorado College we took courses on the "Block Plan," during which students took one course at a time, for one month only. This meant that the same group of about 15 students went to the same class everyday, making it very easy to form small study groups after class. Essentially, I spent four years tutoring (and receiving tutoring!) from my fellow classmates as we worked through class notes and problem sets. Bringing my experiences as both the tutor and tutee from these study sessions, I will strive to create a tutoring plan to your unique form of learning and sending you on your way.

I have enjoyed working with elementary school students for over 15 years. After graduating with a Masters in Elementary Teaching I taught 4-6th grades for my first 10 years before becoming a floating teacher/tutor and working with preschool-4th grade students for five years. I enjoy making learning relevant, providing consistent encouragement and helping my students celebrate their successes. It is important to me that my students become better at managing their educational goals independently and take on a sense of ownership for their learning.

I'm a recent graduate of Harvard's Graduate School of Design where I received a Master of Landscape Architecture. Prior to getting my master's degree, I studied Environmental Policy and Urban Studies at Colorado College. I have a diverse, interdisciplinary academic background which has instilled not only academic curiosity but an appreciation for ways of learning and teaching.As a tutor I'm interested in helping students develop ways of learning that are true to them. During my education, I've learned how important it is to understand what works for me as a student, which isn't always exactly what is prescribed in a classroom.
