Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Julie in New Lenox, IL
We reviewed her homework agenda and made sure that all required assignments were completed. We began with her language arts class, and I made sure that the reading passage and the corresponding multiple choice questions were completed. Often, this is possible by asking her to show me through the online camera the pages directly and making sure that everything is completed. Next, she confirmed that she had completed the required workbook pages for her reading class on the book titled, "The Lightning Thief". Then, we progressed to her math homework on the order of operations. She had also began covering this topic, and was already familiar with the term known as "PEMDAS" which stands for parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. We finished the assigned problems and moved on to her social studies homework. She managed to complete the remaining questions on the first worksheet and the first question on the second worksheet on Chinese history. Finally, we spent a good portion of the session working on her human body systems flashcards. The human body systems can be detailed and complex and she is going to have an exam early next week. I confirmed which systems have already been reviewed and discussed in class, and made sure that all of the covered systems had the appropriate flashcards were completed. The teacher appears to be focusing on the main function of each system, as well as some of the primary components such as significant organs. After she assured me that all flashcards of all the covered systems were completed, we finished the session. The flashcards took a considerable amount of time, and I requested that she begin reviewing them during her spare time.

Summer Tutoring review by Amanda in New Lenox, IL
The student did write down his assignments in his assignment book this week which is excellent. I have asked him to write down 3 things he learned each day in his planner while he rides the bus home. We talked about specificity and defined how to get really specific about what information he learned. We talked through each class. ELA, SS, Math and Science. we started with a general idea "We learned about Rome" got a little more specific, "We learned about classes and their homes" and then got more granular, "Patrician homes had a hole in the ceiling to catch rain water for bathing and drinking" The student asked questions that his learning provoked, "What I want to know is, what if there is a thunderstorm and someone is walking under the hole and gets hit by lightning?" I encouraged him to ask those questions because questioning is a great sign of knowledge and understanding. We talked about organization and how that will make his life easier. He mentioned that his locker is a mess so we talked about why and how to get it into a more useful tool. At my request, he walked me through the steps of cleaning out his locker. He committed to cleaning it out Monday before school and is going to take a before and after picture. The student is also going to keep track of his current organizational process (or lack thereof) and write down 3+ things that HE wants to work on in our next session which is next Sat. I think we are working well together. He is not yet putting all of the ideas we talk about into practice, but he is thinking about them and can recall things from the week if lead in that direction with questioning by me. He likes to read and is really into the book assigned for ELA. I have asked him to check out a choose your own adventure book from the library. I think he will really like them. I have also asked him to share his goals for the week with both of his parents so they can keep him accountable.

The student got a B on his acids and bases quiz. We went over the questions he got wrong and corrected them. He has his matter and energy exam soon. His history test is tomorrow, so we spent most of our time reviewing history. We reviewed his science quiz again and then we printed out his English paper and found an illustration for it so he could turn it in tomorrow. We will finish his science exam review tomorrow.

The student and I worked on her English research paper. She was very overwhelmed with the amount of homework she had to complete, so we discussed what her priorities were and what she wanted me to help her with. We started the research last week, so I was familiar with the topic. I helped her type the paper as she wrote it. She also completed her Spanish homework while we were together.
